Monitoring the Occurrence of Microbes in a Wellhead Protection Area in an Agricultural Setting

This study explored nitrate levels in shallow and deep groundwater wells in Barron County, Wisconsin. Nitrate data was collected from 39 wells and compared based on well depth, with shallow wells defined as less than 100 feet and deep wells over 100 feet. The results of a t-test showed no significant difference in nitrate levels between shallow and deep wells. However, average nitrate levels were higher in wells less than 40 feet compared to over 100 feet. While the study did not find conclusive evidence that well depth impacts nitrates, further testing with a larger sample size is recommended to better understand nitrate levels and potential contributing factors in the area.

This study investigated using the integron gene int1 as a proxy for measuring anthropogenic pollution by comparing it to established bacterial sewage indicators. Water and sediment samples were taken from sites above and below the discharge pipe of a wastewater treatment plant in the summer and fall. The results found that in the summer, int1 levels and bacterial indicators trended similarly except at the discharge pipe where int1 levels were higher. Int1 levels remained consistent in water samples but were significantly higher in sediment below the discharge. This suggests int1 may be a useful pollution indicator, though more studies are needed to fully understand its utility compared to traditional indicators.

Species richness did not significantly differ between urban and forested streams, but EPT richness (pollution-intolerant taxa) was significantly lower in urban streams, supporting the hypothesis. The results suggest EPT richness better distinguishes urban from forested stream quality than other metrics and that urban streams lack characteristics like forested riparian zones that support diverse EPT communities. The continuous discharge of effluents into Warri River, impacts on its water quality parameters as well as plankton species which requires commensurate surveillance. This study focuses on its physicochemical characteristics and their influence on plankton composition and abundance. The surface water samples and plankton collected monthly from June to November 2014 were analyzed using standard methods. The physicochemical parameters showed variations among the stations. The ANOVA results revealed that water temperature, transparency, turbidity, TDS, conductivity, pH, acidity, Dissolved Oxygen and phosphate were significantly different (P <0.05) among the studied sites. A total of 849 plankton species identified; 814 species were phytoplankton consisting of four groups (Bacillariophyta> Chlorophyta> Euglenophyta> Cyanophyta, arranged in order of dominance. While zooplankton had 35 species grouped into 5 groups; Rotifera> Copepoda> Protozoa> Cladocera> Arachnida, in order of dominance. Pearson correlation revealed a significant correlation between different Plankton species population and some parameters (p<0.05). The principal component analysis labelled acidity, organic load, mineralization, nutrient, and organic pollution as influential factors governing plankton abundance in the studied area. These factors identify with materials from industries and human activities along the river, which results in the alteration of plankton composition, particularly Melosira granulata (Ehrenberg) Ralfs,1861. Inferred biological indicator of the water body. Diversity indices ranged from 0.28 to 1.39; Station 2 had the highest (1.39) and Station 1 the lowest species richness, a highly polluted river.

Results showed Kings River had the highest percentage of pollution-sensitive EPT taxa and lowest ratio of pollution-tolerant to intolerant organisms, indicating best health. White River had the highest percentages of pollution-tolerant organisms and Chironomidae, and lowest EPT, indicating most impairment. Percentage of pollution-tolerant organisms increased with higher phosphorus levels at most sites.

A 3D biophysical model was used to simulate the impact of quagga mussels on the spring phytoplankton bloom in Lake Michigan under different climate scenarios. The model results showed that quagga mussels had a greater suppressive effect on chlorophyll levels during a warm spring compared to a cool spring. Satellite data from 1994-2010 also demonstrated that chlorophyll depletion in Lake Michigan correlated spatially with areas of high quagga mussel filter feeding intensity. This study explored nitrate levels in shallow and deep groundwater wells in Barron County, Wisconsin. Nitrate data was collected from 39 wells and compared based on well depth, with shallow wells defined as less than 100 feet and deep wells over 100 feet. The results of a t-test showed no significant difference in nitrate levels between shallow and deep wells. However, average nitrate levels were higher in wells less than 40 feet compared to over 100 feet. While the study did not find conclusive evidence that well depth impacts nitrates, further testing with a larger sample size is recommended to better understand nitrate levels and potential contributing factors in the area.

This study investigated using the integron gene int1 as a proxy for measuring anthropogenic pollution by comparing it to established bacterial sewage indicators. Water and sediment samples were taken from sites above and below the discharge pipe of a wastewater treatment plant in the summer and fall. The results found that in the summer, int1 levels and bacterial indicators trended similarly except at the discharge pipe where int1 levels were higher. Int1 levels remained consistent in water samples but were significantly higher in sediment below the discharge. This suggests int1 may be a useful pollution indicator, though more studies are needed to fully understand its utility compared to traditional indicators.

The study compared macroinvertebrate communities in 4 urban streams and 4 forested streams in Vermont. Species richness did not significantly differ between urban and forested streams, but EPT richness (pollution-intolerant taxa) was significantly lower in urban streams, supporting the hypothesis. Dominance (proportion of the most abundant species) did not significantly differ. The results suggest EPT richness better distinguishes urban from forested stream quality than other metrics and that urban streams lack characteristics like forested riparian zones that support diverse EPT communities. Further study of specific taxa and agricultural streams was recommended.

This study examines colloid transport mechanisms at the pore scale using x-ray microtomography and pore-scale modeling. Experiments were conducted using glass bead columns dosed with hydrophobic silver-coated colloids under saturated and unsaturated conditions. X-ray imaging showed colloids partitioned between solid-water interfaces, air-water interfaces, and disconnected water phases depending on saturation. Pore-scale modeling implemented colloidal interaction forces and fluid flow to simulate colloid transport. The models showed colloid attachment increased with ionic strength and some colloids were strained during drainage. The continuous discharge of effluents into Warri River, impacts on its water quality parameters as well as plankton species which requires commensurate surveillance. This study focuses on its physicochemical characteristics and their influence on plankton composition and abundance. The surface water samples and plankton collected monthly from June to November 2014 were analyzed using standard methods. The physicochemical parameters showed variations among the stations. The ANOVA results revealed that water temperature, transparency, turbidity, TDS, conductivity, pH, acidity, Dissolved Oxygen and phosphate were significantly different (P <0.05) among the studied sites. A total of 849 plankton species identified; 814 species were phytoplankton consisting of four groups (Bacillariophyta> Chlorophyta> Euglenophyta> Cyanophyta, arranged in order of dominance. While zooplankton had 35 species grouped into 5 groups; Rotifera> Copepoda> Protozoa> Cladocera> Arachnida, in order of dominance. Pearson correlation revealed a significant correlation between different Plankton species population and some parameters (p<0.05). The principal component analysis labelled acidity, organic load, mineralization, nutrient, and organic pollution as influential factors governing plankton abundance in the studied area. These factors identify with materials from industries and human activities along the river, which results in the alteration of plankton composition, particularly Melosira granulata (Ehrenberg) Ralfs,1861. Inferred biological indicator of the water body. Diversity indices ranged from 0.28 to 1.39; Station 2 had the highest (1.39) and Station 1 the lowest species richness, a highly polluted river.

Seven Ozark stream sites were sampled and their macroinvertebrate communities assessed. The sites varied in phosphorus concentration from 0.013 to 0.042 μg/L. Results showed Kings River had the highest percentage of pollution-sensitive EPT taxa and lowest ratio of pollution-tolerant to intolerant organisms, indicating best health. White River had the highest percentages of pollution-tolerant organisms and Chironomidae, and lowest EPT, indicating most impairment. Percentage of pollution-tolerant organisms increased with higher phosphorus levels at most sites.

A 3D biophysical model was used to simulate the impact of quagga mussels on the spring phytoplankton bloom in Lake Michigan under different climate scenarios. The model results showed that quagga mussels had a greater suppressive effect on chlorophyll levels during a warm spring compared to a cool spring. Satellite data from 1994-2010 also demonstrated that chlorophyll depletion in Lake Michigan correlated spatially with areas of high quagga mussel filter feeding intensity. Artifi cial wetlands are useful for wastewater treatment; however, relatively little is known of the effects of sewage on artifi cial wetland microbial community structure. Therefore, we assessed the effect of municipal sewage on microbial community diversity in surface water throughout an artifi cial wetland (Xiantao artifi cial wetland) treating municipal sewage. We analyzed the relationship between physicochemical parameters of surface water (i.e., Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Nitrogen (TN), Total Phosphorus (TP), and
NH4+-N) with microbial community structure (Illumina MiSeq sequencing followed by abundance indices). The results showed that the total microbial community in surface water was signifi cantly correlated with COD, TN, TP, and NH4
+-N (r = 0.764, 0.897, 0.883, 0.839, P < 0.05). In addition, the most abundant taxa were significantly correlated with COD (r = 0.803, P < 0.05). The relative abundance of rare operational taxonomic units in the more purifi ed water farther downstream was higher than in the polluted area, suggesting that rare groups were more sensitive to physicochemical parameters than abundant groups, and that the abundance of some bacteria could indirectly indicate the degree of aquatic pollution. This study examined the effects of a dumpsite on groundwater quality in a poultry community in Liberia. Water samples were collected from 8 wells near the dumpsite and tested for various physical parameters. The results found that 4 of the wells exceeded Liberian standards for turbidity, total suspended solids, and other measures. The dumpsite is concluded to be polluting the local groundwater supply due to leachate migration from decomposing waste. Recommendations include closing the dumpsite, constructing a proper landfill, and efforts by government agencies to address the public health risks from groundwater pollution.

This document summarizes a study on the impacts of agricultural wastes on groundwater pollution at Lipakala Farms in Nigeria. Water samples from the main water well supplying the farm were tested. Results showed elevated levels of ions like lead and nitrates. Physical characteristics like temperature and turbidity were within acceptable limits, but taste indicated high salt deposits. Microbial analysis found bacterial and coliform contamination, indicating pollution from waste. The well is located downstream from a waste dump and farmland, making it susceptible to runoff. Physico-chemical parameters and macrobenthic invertebrates of the intertidal zone of Gusa, Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines were assessed from March to May 2014. Water temperature, pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand, and type of substrate were determined in the study were within the normal range. A modified transect-quadrat method was used in an approximately 14,000 m2 of study area. Seven hundred twenty seven individuals belonging to 15 species were found in the area. These organisms belong to four phyla namely: Mollusca, Arthropoda, Echinodermata, and Annelida. The three most abundant organisms found were Coenobita clypeatus, Ophiothrix longipeda, and Cypraea poraria with relative abundance of 73.86%, 4.13% and 3.71% respectively. Most of the macrobenthic fauna identified exhibited a clumped pattern of distribution, while the rest are randomly distributed. The species diversity of the area is 1.19 which is very low compared to reports from related studies.
Trace metals concentration determination in domestic water
This document analyzes trace metal concentrations in domestic water samples from Keana mine area in Nasarawa State, Nigeria. Water samples were collected from wells, boreholes, and streams in the area and analyzed for concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, chromium, strontium, lead, thorium, and zinc using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. The results found high levels of arsenic exceeding WHO guidelines in all samples. Strontium levels were close to the acceptable range. Lead and zinc concentrations were low. The high arsenic levels pose a health risk and suggest closer monitoring of water sources is needed to reduce risks to local inhabitants.

This document evaluates the use of ultraviolet (UV) radiation and ozone for disinfecting primary municipal wastewater effluents. Experiments tested different ozone concentrations and UV fluencies at varying pH levels. Ozone doses near 20 mg/min achieved 72-78% removal of fecal and total coliforms, and removed up to 36% of chemical oxygen demand (COD). UV achieved over 80% inactivation of bacteria. Both treatments were most effective against bacteria at pH levels other than 7. UV treatment had lower energy requirements than ozone treatment. Development of mathematical model to predict the rate of microbial depositions (E.coli) in a natural pond has been carried out. The models were developed to monitor the rate of concentration at different periods, with respect to the length of the pond at various sample station. Results of the theoretical values were compared with the experimental analysis. The analysis was thoroughly done to determine the physiochemical parameters of the pond. Microbial traces were found from the experimental analysis at different periods up to hundred days. The developed model compared favourably well with the experimental values. The values explain the rate of microbial growth and level of lag phase condition. The growth rate of the microbes were found to be higher because there is high deposition of substrate for growth and energy, while at some periods it degrades showing that the substrates have reduced in concentration including the inhibition from the pH. In some cases when the microbes developed lag phase condition it may be as a result of other environmental factors. Finally, the growth rates are between fifty and hundred days, showing that there is constant regeneration of the microbes including other environmental factors.

The degradation of surface water quality in Cameroon is linked to the absence of a functional waste management strategy. For such a strategy to be efficient, a general understanding of aquatic ecosystems will be of importance, these management strategies are particularly lacking in the eastern part of the country. To better understand and appreciate the ecosystems in the town of Bertoua, five ponds where chosen for the physicochemical and zooplankton communities analysis. Sampling on these ponds was conducted from March 2016 to April 2017 on a monthly basis. Samples for physicochemical analysis were collected at 20cm below water surface at the middle of each pond and measured were done following the recommendations of Rodier and Alpha. Biological samples were collected by filtering 50 liters of water through a 64µm mesh opening sieve. Identification was done using standard methods and identification keys. One-way ANOVA analysis was conducted to assess the potential differences between the different ponds base monthly observations. Although they are all hypereutrophic, with regard to the values of the physicochemical parameters, the five ponds showed no significant difference between them but, the structure of the zooplankton community remains very diverse. 118 zooplankton species have been identified in the five ponds. The distribution of zooplankton in these hydrosystems was mainly governed by the presence of organic matter. This study sheds light on the status and biological diversity of ponds in eastern Cameroon, data on which to rely to develop management strategies.

The aim of this study is to assess the impact of nutrients in combination with climatic stressors on lakes in Northern Europe based on phytoplankton indicators, under current and future conditions. Eutrophication and climate change are considered an important stressor combination for lakes in most parts of the world. High concentrations of total phosphorus (TP) in combination with increased temperature tend to benefit growth of phytoplankton, and in particular cyanobacteria, which can result in harmful algal blooms. In this study, we used monitoring data from ca. 800 lakes in United Kingdom, Norway, Sweden and Finland (in total ca. 2000 lake-years). The data were compiled during the past EU project WISER and are being modelled in the on-going EU project MARS (2014-2018).
The first step was to quantify the empirical relationships between phytoplankton indicators (cyanobacteria, biomass and the Phytoplankton Trophic Index), nutrients (primarily TP) and climatic variables (temperature, precipitation and wind) and other lake characteristics (including typology factors such as mean depth, surface area, altitude, alkalinity and humic level). A hierarchical regression model was used account for lake types and for repeated measurements from lakes (lake-years). Following the conceptual model DPSIR (driver-pressure-state-impact-response), we also attempted to link the nutrient concentrations to drivers (population density and land use) and pressures (nutrient loads).
The second step was to construct a parametric model constructed based on the quantified relationships. The purpose of this model was to predict the ecological status of the lakes based phytoplankton indicators under different future scenarios of climate and potentially land use. Preliminary assessment by this model has indicated the risk of cyanobacteria concentrations exceeding an acceptable limit increases with higher temperature but decreases slightly with more precipitation. In the current assessment, more realistic future scenarios will be applied for each individual lake. Here we use future projections for climate and land use for the years 2030 and 2060, which are generated on a 0.5 degrees grid for all of Europe. The projections are based on the 3 storylines defined by the MARS project ("Techno world", "Consensus world", "Fragmented world"), which combine different climatic and socio-economic scenarios.
Determination-Of-Sources-Of-Water-Pollution
The document summarizes a study that was conducted to determine sources of water pollution in Appiakrom community, Ghana. The study examined a dam, pond, and two boreholes used by the community. Laboratory analysis of water samples found that the dam, which supplies water to the district, had been polluted by anthropogenic activities. The rusty nature of one borehole was attributed to underground parent materials. The pond interfaced with the dam, and pollution could flow between the two sources. The authors recommend blocking channels between the pond and dam, and practicing zero-fertilizer farming near the dam to reduce pollution.

Abstract— A limnological investigation was carried out in River Basantar in the Jammu province of Jammu & Kashmir (India) during the period from December, 2009 to November, 2011 in order to analyse the effect of industrial pollution on the diversity and population density of Macrobenthic invertebrate fauna along the longitudinal profile of the river. A total of 27 macrobenthic invertebrate taxa inhabited the river; among these Arthropoda dominated the macrobenthic community (81.48%, 22 species) followed by Annelida (11.11%, 3 species) and Mollusca (7.41%, 2 species). The Discharge Zone (St II) had the highest mean standing crop of macrobenthic population while the lowest species number. Oligochaetes (Annelida) and Dipterans (Arthropoda) exhibited their abundance at polluted sites whereas Odonates, Ephemeropterans, Hemipterans, Coleopterans (Arthropoda) and Molluscs were abundant at least polluted sites. Tubifex tubifex, Branchiura sowerbyi, Limnodrillus hoffmeisteri, Chironomus, Tubifera, Psychoda and Physa acuta were identified as pollution indicator taxa while Progomphus, Cloeon, Baetis and Gyraulus as sensitive taxa.RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING AROUND DEEP-SEA MINING SITES

Ecosystem Services and Perception of Water Quality of Lake Barombi Kotto, Cam...
This study carried out in BarombiKotto was aimed at assessing ecosystem services provided by Lake BarombiKotto and its riparian vegetation and to determine the level of awareness of this community to threats to degradation of water quality and riparian vegetation. Two hundred semi structured questionnaires were administered to the inhabitants of BarombiKotto village using the purposive sampling method. The Likert rating method was used to derive quantitative data that was further analysed using SPSS version 17. Results revealed that, respondents depended on the lake and vegetation for the provision of water for drinking, domestic purposes, irrigation, transport, recreational and cultural activities and also on forest benefits like wood for fuel, construction and medicinal plants. Significant associations were found between age group, level of education and respondentsawareness about the threats to water quality and sustainable practices. Agriculture, harvest of wood for construction, high fishing rates, increasing abundance of aquatic weeds were identified as major threats to Lake BarombiKotto and its surrounding vegetation. Water quality attributes like reduced transparency, lake depth, and other parameters such as aquatic weeds and fish stocks have changed in Lake BarombiKotto. The absence of conventional waste management facilities in BarombiKotto community and poor sanitary conditions of toilets could be responsible for the contamination of this lake and hence the high prevalence of typhoid, dysentery and other gastrointestinal infections among respondents.
