Chapter 2 investigates ways that information systems (IS) can support collaboration. It defines collaboration
and discusses collaborative activities and criteria for successful collaboration. It also discusses the kind of
work that collaborative teams do, requirements for collaborative IS, and important collaborative tools for
improving communicating content. The chapter ends with a discussion of collaboration in 2024.
Collaboration and Cooperation
Cooperation occurs when people work together toward a common goal. For example, in teamwork, each
team member is given a task to complete such as a project component. Collaboration occurs when people,
together or remotely, work together toward a common goal (Kroenke & Boyle, 2017). For example, a team
member in California and a team member in Texas might meet using Skype to discuss ideas for a project.
Figure 1 below illustrates collaboration in a team environment. In this illustration, the project manager is
responsible for collaborating with team members who are in different departments. For example, the project

3M’s Conundrum of Efficiency and Creativity
Companies known for their innovative character, like Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing (3M), share at least four fundamental characteristics: (1) Putting people and ideas at the heart of the management philosophy. (2) Giving people opportunities and latitude to develop, try new things, and learn from their mistakes. (3) Building a strong sense of openness, trust, and community throughout the organization. (4) Facilitating the mobility of talent within the organization.
3M believes in the power of ideas and individual initiative; and “recognizes that entrepreneurial behavior will continue to flourish only if management is willing to accept and even applaud ‘well-intentioned failure’.”
Innovation, the traditional hallmark of 3M’s business operations and success, is “a process that thrives on multiple, diverse, independent and rapid experimentation, in a failure-tolerant environment that values and accommodates constructive conflict.”
Richard McKnight, 3M’s president in the company’s early days, “recognized that it was the individual inventor, enabled in pursuing his ideas, who could help the company develop new organizational knowledge with which to meet emerging customer needs. As a result, McKnight created the company’s 15 Percent Rule, which still encourages technical employees to spend as much as 15 percent of their time pursuing their own ideas. ( Among the most successful of the products developed through the 15 Percent Rule are masking tape in the 1930s, Scotchgard fabric protector in the 1950s, and Post-it Notes in the 1970s.”
The creative and innovative orientation of 3M ( and in particular a tolerance for failure, defects or errors ( came under serious attack in December 2000, when former General Electric executive James McNerney took over as CEO of 3M. McNerney immediately began implementing Six Sigma,
a type of management program that is designed to identify problems in work processes, and then use rigorous measurement to reduce variation, eliminate defects, and increase efficiency. Under McNerney’s leadership, profits initially grew at about 22 percent annually but then sputtered. Some experts were critical of McNerney’s unyielding commitment to Six Sigma, wondering if it was stifling 3M’s creativity and innovation.
When initiatives such as Six Sigma become embedded in a company’s culture, as they did at 3M, creativity and innovation can easily get squelched.
In mid-2005, when McNerney departed 3M to take the CEO’s job at Boeing, he left his successor, George Buckley, with the difficult question of “whether the relentless emphasis on efficiency had made 3M a less creative company.”
According to management guru Tom Peters, McNerney’s implementation of Six Sigma at 3M “more or less closed the lid on entrepreneurial behavior.”

Reflection Report - Dyson Case Study
The group faced two main issues during their assignment. First, there was a lack of critical analysis during research due to dividing work and not commenting on each other's parts. They proposed adopting a facilitative leadership model to promote critical thinking. Second, decision making was unsystematic with interruptions, due to being overly polite. They proposed using brainstorming to systematically involve members and allow for constructive conflict. Overall, the experience highlighted the importance of systematic critical thinking and debate within groups to achieve quality work.

This paper aims to investigate the mechanisms that contribute to propagation of competence in an Agile
Scrum team. This study seeks to challenge the traditional view of bounded rationality (BR). An Agile Scrum
team (Team) is expected to build problem solving competence quickly as the expected ramp up time
continues to shrink. But the team has a mixture of expertise, competence and sociability levels that affect
out-of-the-box performance. The objective is to expand BR into the social realm and see how teams can
self-organize and reconfigure to allow effective problem solving. Studies have shown that agent-based
computational simulation is an appropriate technique to explore this point from a theoretical perspective.
(Fioretti, 2013) (Secchi, 2015). The first step is to define the problem, discuss how senior team members
exhibit high curiosity and apply sociability and cognitive resources to develop overall team competence.
This dynamic is modeled and simulated in NetLogoR and the results are analyzed. Finally, some key
findings are presented and discussed.

Companies known for their innovative character, like Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing (3M), share at least four fundamental characteristics: (1) Putting people and ideas at the heart of the management philosophy. (2) Giving people opportunities and latitude to develop, try new things, and learn from their mistakes. (3) Building a strong sense of openness, trust, and community throughout the organization. (4) Facilitating the mobility of talent within the organization.
3M believes in the power of ideas and individual initiative; and “recognizes that entrepreneurial behavior will continue to flourish only if management is willing to accept and even applaud ‘well-intentioned failure’.”
Innovation, the traditional hallmark of 3M’s business operations and success, is “a process that thrives on multiple, diverse, independent and rapid experimentation, in a failure-tolerant environment that values and accommodates constructive conflict.”
Richard McKnight, 3M’s president in the company’s early days, “recognized that it was the individual inventor, enabled in pursuing his ideas, who could help the company develop new organizational knowledge with which to meet emerging customer needs. As a result, McKnight created the company’s 15 Percent Rule, which still encourages technical employees to spend as much as 15 percent of their time pursuing their own ideas. ( Among the most successful of the products developed through the 15 Percent Rule are masking tape in the 1930s, Scotchgard fabric protector in the 1950s, and Post-it Notes in the 1970s.”
The creative and innovative orientation of 3M ( and in particular a tolerance for failure, defects or errors ( came under serious attack in December 2000, when former General Electric executive James McNerney took over as CEO of 3M. McNerney immediately began implementing Six Sigma,
a type of management program that is designed to identify problems in work processes, and then use rigorous measurement to reduce variation, eliminate defects, and increase efficiency. Under McNerney’s leadership, profits initially grew at about 22 percent annually but then sputtered. Some experts were critical of McNerney’s unyielding commitment to Six Sigma, wondering if it was stifling 3M’s creativity and innovation.
When initiatives such as Six Sigma become embedded in a company’s culture, as they did at 3M, creativity and innovation can easily get squelched.
In mid-2005, when McNerney departed 3M to take the CEO’s job at Boeing, he left his successor, George Buckley, with the difficult question of “whether the relentless emphasis on efficiency had made 3M a less creative company.”
According to management guru Tom Peters, McNerney’s implementation of Six Sigma at 3M “more or less closed the lid on entrepreneurial behavior.”

The group faced two main issues during their assignment. First, there was a lack of critical analysis during research due to dividing work and not commenting on each other's parts. This paper aims to investigate the mechanisms that contribute to propagation of competence in an Agile
Scrum team. This study seeks to challenge the traditional view of bounded rationality (BR). An Agile Scrum
team (Team) is expected to build problem solving competence quickly as the expected ramp up time
continues to shrink. But the team has a mixture of expertise, competence and sociability levels that affect
out-of-the-box performance. The objective is to expand BR into the social realm and see how teams can
self-organize and reconfigure to allow effective problem solving. Studies have shown that agent-based
computational simulation is an appropriate technique to explore this point from a theoretical perspective.
(Fioretti, 2013) (Secchi, 2015). The first step is to define the problem, discuss how senior team members
exhibit high curiosity and apply sociability and cognitive resources to develop overall team competence.
This dynamic is modeled and simulated in NetLogoR and the results are analyzed. Finally, some key
findings are presented and discussed.

Alanna Falk is a Medical office manager for an endocrinologist.
She has a bachelor’s degree in business administration and is a trained medical assistant for over twenty years.
She has direct contact with the three providers in her office as well as the patients on a daily basis.
She performs the administrative aspect of the office and fills in where needed.
Overall she enjoys her office but at times feel that it is overwhelming with the amount of patients and being her doctor is one of two in the area for this specialty.
One problem that she is having is getting the patients to get onboard with the use of technology to simplify and reduce the amount of time spent filling paperwork out to include the cost in staff printing, ink and filing space. This often delays the patients getting in the back office to see the physicians on time even after they are checked in on time and it throws the whole schedule off for the day.
She would like to go paperless as possible and being that their scheduling team gets their information for the most part over the phone she would like to utilize tablets or a computer program that will help them become more efficient in the practice and maintain patient privacy.
