MAIAC is a new algorithm that simultaneously retrieves aerosol and land bidirectional reflectance from MODIS data. It produces 1km resolution products including cloud mask, water vapor, aerosol optical thickness and fraction, and surface reflectance. The MAIAC algorithm fits blue band reflectance to retrieve aerosol optical thickness and coarse mode fraction using known surface reflectance in red and SWIR bands from previous retrievals. Validation shows MAIAC accuracy is generally similar to existing MOD04 algorithm over most global land areas. MAIAC provides an improved generic retrieval approach for aerosols and surface properties over both dark and bright land surfaces.
