Modal verbs are verbs that don't follow the same grammatical rules as regular verbs and can express obligation, permission, willingness, and possibility. The main modal verbs are can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, must, need to, have to, and be able to. They don't use "-s" in the third person present simple, don't need "do/does" to form negatives except "have to", and some can't be used in past or future tenses. Modal verbs express ability, permission, obligation, and possibility and don't take an infinitive "to" except for need to, have to, and ought to.
