This document summarizes a study on the mobile phone calling and texting patterns of college students in Pakistan. The study involved 77 college students aged 17-21 who completed 24-hour mobile phone diaries and interviews. Key findings included:
1) Students were high users of texting but low users of voice calls, averaging around 4 calls received/made per day but 85-100 texts received/sent.
2) Most communication was with peers of similar ages, though some use was seen as problematic in terms of place, time and purpose.
3) Monthly mobile phone expenses ranged most commonly from 100-500 Pakistani rupees among students.

There have significant difference in usage pattern between male and female students. Male students maintain close tie with family living in distance (villages or towns far away from Dhaka) while female prefers using mobile to make personal relation steady (with friends and lover). Female students view it as a security tool and male students view as a medium to express fashion and style. Female prefers talking more at night and male at day. Majority of female students talks more than 3 hours a day but majority of male students prefers talk less than an hour a day. Male students find spending more time on mobile phone have vulnerability to psychological disturbances. Females are not aware of it. There is a need to further uncover underlying factors that influence student’s mobile phone behavior.

A cross sectional study conducted among 200 UG students and studied the pattern of usage of mobile phones, common problems encountered and its dependence using a questionnaire. Using Statistical tools we anyalised the data and our study shows Samsung mobile brand is more popular among the studens and they are mostly preferred the Idea’ Sim card company students. This study investigated the use of cell phones for academic activities amongst the undergraduate
students of the Federal University of Technology Minna (FUTM). Survey questionnaire was used for collecting
data from 379 respondents drawn based on stratified random sampling. The response rate was 99%. Findings
show that the majority 246(65.6%) of the respondents were very strongly agreed that they have awareness on
the usage of cell phones for making calls, while 224(59.7%) of them were very strongly agreed that they have
used cell phones to access the Internet. Whereas, 122(32.5%) of the respondents were very strongly agreed
that spending more time on cell phone reduces academic performance. Also 209(55.7%) of the respondents
were very strongly agreed that most students of FUTM faced the challenges of slow Internet connection,
252(67.2%) respondents were very strongly agreed that the wireless Internet infrastructure in the university
should be upgraded to ensure quality and faster download, and should be available to students for use all

Recent developments in mobile technologies have provided unique opportunities for learning and teaching. This paper reports on recent research undertaken at a regional Australian university in order to understand how higher education students are using mobile devices to support their learning. A survey instrument was developed and deployed and the data collected analysed quantitatively. Upon analysis, these data demonstrate that students are predominantly using laptop computers to support their learning, but their use of smart phones and tablets are also used for a number of specific learning activities. Further analysis indicates that in spite of the limitations in the formal university infrastructure, many students would like to use their mobile devices for formal
learning as well as informal learning.

students towards the awareness of ICT and to find out the difference between undergraduate,
postgraduate, and M.Phil. Students. 236 samples were taken from B.Ed. students from ten colleges
of education (B.Ed. College) in Thanjavur and Pudukottai Districts affiliated to Tamil Nadu
Teacher Education University, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The data were collected by self-made
questionnaire. Special attention was given to factors like gender, type of college and degree of
B.Ed. Students. The data were analyzed by using percentage analysis,‗t‘ test, and ANOVA. Results
revealed that the level of awareness of ICT was moderate, there is no significant difference
between (i) male and female and (ii) Government and Unaided Colleges B.Ed. students towards
ICT and there is no significant difference among undergraduate, postgraduate, M.Phil. degree

The study aimed to investigate the uses and effect of ICTs for Jordanian learning from their perspective of student of higher school at the north of Jordan. The study method was a descriptive survey which uses questionnaire to collect data, questionnaire was justified and developed by the researcher to measure the effect of ICTs based on previous studies its applied to (548) student of higher school. The results indicate that ICTs for higher school at the north of Jordan there were a statistically significant relationship between the higher school at the north of Jordan and Jordanian learning, and seven of hypotheses reported statistically significant in the hypotheses and accepted but three hypotheses reported no a statistically significant and rejected. For the purpose, a list of secondary school of CBSE and U.P. Board are prepared and four institutions were selected with the help of lottery method. The selected samples of four schools were randomly divided into two groups Experimental groups and Controlled groups. The required data was collected at two stages as pre-test and post test scores from the achievement test in chemistry. Therefore the issue of computer access and literacy have become important for higher education and institutions which churns out graduates for the world of work. The Information Communication Technology (ICT) policy of University of Cape Coast, Ghana is to ensure that all graduates acquire proficiency in ICT. ICT literacy and access are components of agricultural curriculum.
The paper presents findings of a study that determined gender differences in computer access and literacy among agricultural students at University of Cape Coast in Ghana. Survey design involving the use of questionnaire was used to collect data for the study. A cluster random sampling procedure was used to sample 144 respondents out the population of 585 undergraduate students in the School of Agriculture. The study concluded that there are gender differences in computer access and literacy among agricultural undergraduates at the University of Cape Coast. The study recommends compulsory ICT proficiency course and a scheme to acquire Personal Computers for students to bridge the computer access and literacy gap.

Abstract: This study highlights on the findings of a survey study which was done in some schools within one of the sub-counties in Kenya. Evidence has been collected through a literature review, teacher questionnaires and interviews. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the existing factors that support or hinder teachers from utilizing ICTs in their classrooms despite having them. This study was guided by the theory of Technology acceptance model by Davis, Bagozzi and Warshaw, (1989).The study reviewed literature on the importance of the use of ICTs in teaching and learning. Descriptive survey is the framework that guided the study. The study area is Kericho County in Kenya. Analysis of data was done thematically to exhibit the attitudes, values and views of the teachers concerning the usefulness of ICTs in teaching and also the factors that hinder utilization ICTs. Descriptive statistics was also used to analyze data from questionnaires. The literature analyzed shows that ICTs are very important in the following areas: they make the lessons more interesting, easier, more fun for teachers and their pupils, more diverse, more motivating for the pupils and more enjoyable. Additional more personal factors were improving presentation of materials, allowing greater access to computers for personal use, giving more power to the teacher in the school, giving the teacher more prestige, making the teachers' administration more efficient and providing professional support through the Internet. The findings from this study reveals that factors hindering the utilization of this precious teaching materials includes, lack of clarity in the use of this ICTs in the curriculum, time factor, incompetence among the teachers on computer skills, overreliance on traditional methods of teaching and resistance to change.

Background Mobile phone addiction shows a distinct user profile that differentiates it from internet addiction. The problematic use of mobile phone has been associated with personality variables, such as extraversion, neuroticism, self esteem, impulsivity, self identity and self image. Similarly sleep disturbance, anxiety, stress and to a lesser extent depression, which are also associated with problematic mobile phone use which can be triggered by improving basic knowledge about Mobile phone addiction, its health hazards and its prevention. Objectives The study aimed to evaluate effectiveness of information booklet on mobile phone addiction, health hazards of mobile phone addiction and prevention of mobile phone addiction. Methods Quantitative a research approach was used. The research design adopted was Pre test and post test control group design. The questionnaire was developed and used for data collection to assess the knowledge of B.Sc. Nursing 1st year students. The main study was conducted GSRM Memorial College of Nursing Lucknow. The sample of the study consisted of 40 B.Sc. Nursing 1st year students. Results The findings show that the majority 17 40 had adequate knowledge and 20 50 had moderately adequate knowledge and 4 10 had inadequate knowledge. There was a significant association between the post test knowledge gain score and age, religion, type of family, socio economic condition, education of fathers, education of mothers, and source of knowledge. Conclusion This study concludes that structured teaching program plays a vital role in increasing the knowledge level among B.Sc. Cell phones are nearly ubiquitous in the college classroom. This study asks two primary
questions regarding the making and breaking of in-class cell phone policies. In what manner
are students using their phones and how can faculty members minimize the potential for
phone-related distractions? To answer these questions we analyze original survey data from
nearly 400 college students across multiple public and private universities to better
understand the students’ impulse to use their phones during class. Results from the survey
demonstrate that more than 80% of students use their phone at least once per class and that
students generally believe this to be an acceptable practice. These student data are
supplemented with survey data from close to 100 college faculty to evaluate a range of
policy options for dealing with this issue. From this analysis, it is clear that the policies most
frequently implemented by instructors are typically perceived by students as the least
effective.

INTRODUCTION
Cell phones have become a ubiquitous feature in American
society. A 2014 survey by a communication industry orga-
nization estimated that the United States, with a population
of approximately 317 million, had nearly 336 million wire-
less subscriptions, meaning that wireless connection pene-
tration stood at an astonishing 104.3% (CITA 2014). This
number continues to climb. Studies from a broad array of
disciplines have examined the myriad ways that cell phones
have transformed society, business, communication, health,
and numerous other facets of daily life, including education
(Campbell 2006; Gilroy 2004; Jenaro et al. 2007; Katz
2005; Wei and Leung 1999).
As educators well know, cell phones have become per-
vasive in the classroom. While many scholars offer sug-
gestions about how to make cell phones a useful
pedagogical tool (Katz 2003; Kinsella 2009; Lindquist
et al. 2007; Prensky 2005; Schell, Lukoff and Mazur
2013; Scornavacca et al. 2009; Valk et al. 2010), others
bemoan the distracting nature of cell phones in the class-
room. One scholar has gone as far as likening cell phone
interruptions during class to a form of “technological
terror,” citing the multitude of ways that a single cell
phone can disrupt an entire class (Gilroy 2004, 56). While
this term is admittedly hyperbolic, nearly every educator
has had to deal with problems related to student cell phone
use and interruptions during class. The actual distractions
caused by cell phones can vary widely across campuses
and classrooms. This study contributes to a small but
growing literature on cell phone use in the classroom
(Baker et al. 2012; Campbell 2006; Campbell and Russo
2003; End et al. 2010; Gil.

The paper presents findings of a study that determined gender differences in computer access and literacy among agricultural students at University of Cape Coast in Ghana. Survey design involving the use of questionnaire was used to collect data for the study. A cluster random sampling procedure was used to sample 144 respondents out the population of 585 undergraduate students in the School of Agriculture. The study concluded that there are gender differences in computer access and literacy among agricultural undergraduates at the University of Cape Coast. The study recommends compulsory ICT proficiency course and a scheme to acquire Personal Computers for students to bridge the computer access and literacy gap.

from the frequency analysis, the most frequent factors in the Mobile blackboard or Mobile learning
adoption studies are performance expectancy, effort expectancy, perceived playfulness, facilitating
conditions, self-management, cost and past experiences. The descriptive statistic was performed to gather
the respondents’ demographic information. It also shows that the respondents agreed on nearly every
statement item. Pearson correlation and regression analysis were also conducted.

Abstract: This study highlights on the findings of a survey study which was done in some schools within one of the sub-counties in Kenya. Evidence has been collected through a literature review, teacher questionnaires and interviews. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the existing factors that support or hinder teachers from utilizing ICTs in their classrooms despite having them. This study was guided by the theory of Technology acceptance model by Davis, Bagozzi and Warshaw, (1989).The study reviewed literature on the importance of the use of ICTs in teaching and learning. Descriptive survey is the framework that guided the study. The study area is Kericho County in Kenya. Analysis of data was done thematically to exhibit the attitudes, values and views of the teachers concerning the usefulness of ICTs in teaching and also the factors that hinder utilization ICTs. Descriptive statistics was also used to analyze data from questionnaires. The literature analyzed shows that ICTs are very important in the following areas: they make the lessons more interesting, easier, more fun for teachers and their pupils, more diverse, more motivating for the pupils and more enjoyable. Additional more personal factors were improving presentation of materials, allowing greater access to computers for personal use, giving more power to the teacher in the school, giving the teacher more prestige, making the teachers' administration more efficient and providing professional support through the Internet. The findings from this study reveals that factors hindering the utilization of this precious teaching materials includes, lack of clarity in the use of this ICTs in the curriculum, time factor, incompetence among the teachers on computer skills, overreliance on traditional methods of teaching and resistance to change.

Background Mobile phone addiction shows a distinct user profile that differentiates it from internet addiction. The problematic use of mobile phone has been associated with personality variables, such as extraversion, neuroticism, self esteem, impulsivity, self identity and self image. Similarly sleep disturbance, anxiety, stress and to a lesser extent depression, which are also associated with problematic mobile phone use which can be triggered by improving basic knowledge about Mobile phone addiction, its health hazards and its prevention. Objectives The study aimed to evaluate effectiveness of information booklet on mobile phone addiction, health hazards of mobile phone addiction and prevention of mobile phone addiction. Methods Quantitative a research approach was used. The research design adopted was Pre test and post test control group design. The questionnaire was developed and used for data collection to assess the knowledge of B.Sc. Nursing 1st year students. The main study was conducted GSRM Memorial College of Nursing Lucknow. The sample of the study consisted of 40 B.Sc. Nursing 1st year students. Results The findings show that the majority 17 40 had adequate knowledge and 20 50 had moderately adequate knowledge and 4 10 had inadequate knowledge. There was a significant association between the post test knowledge gain score and age, religion, type of family, socio economic condition, education of fathers, education of mothers, and source of knowledge. Conclusion This study concludes that structured teaching program plays a vital role in increasing the knowledge level among B.Sc. Cell phones are nearly ubiquitous in the college classroom. This study asks two primary
questions regarding the making and breaking of in-class cell phone policies. In what manner
are students using their phones and how can faculty members minimize the potential for
phone-related distractions? To answer these questions we analyze original survey data from
nearly 400 college students across multiple public and private universities to better
understand the students’ impulse to use their phones during class. Results from the survey
demonstrate that more than 80% of students use their phone at least once per class and that
students generally believe this to be an acceptable practice. These student data are
supplemented with survey data from close to 100 college faculty to evaluate a range of
policy options for dealing with this issue. From this analysis, it is clear that the policies most
frequently implemented by instructors are typically perceived by students as the least
effective.

INTRODUCTION
Cell phones have become a ubiquitous feature in American
society. A 2014 survey by a communication industry orga-
nization estimated that the United States, with a population
of approximately 317 million, had nearly 336 million wire-
less subscriptions, meaning that wireless connection pene-
tration stood at an astonishing 104.3% (CITA 2014). This
number continues to climb. Studies from a broad array of
disciplines have examined the myriad ways that cell phones
have transformed society, business, communication, health,
and numerous other facets of daily life, including education
(Campbell 2006; Gilroy 2004; Jenaro et al. 2007; Katz
2005; Wei and Leung 1999).
As educators well know, cell phones have become per-
vasive in the classroom. While many scholars offer sug-
gestions about how to make cell phones a useful
pedagogical tool (Katz 2003; Kinsella 2009; Lindquist
et al. 2007; Prensky 2005; Schell, Lukoff and Mazur
2013; Scornavacca et al. 2009; Valk et al. 2010), others
bemoan the distracting nature of cell phones in the class-
room. One scholar has gone as far as likening cell phone
interruptions during class to a form of “technological
terror,” citing the multitude of ways that a single cell
phone can disrupt an entire class (Gilroy 2004, 56). While
this term is admittedly hyperbolic, nearly every educator
has had to deal with problems related to student cell phone
use and interruptions during class. The actual distractions
caused by cell phones can vary widely across campuses
and classrooms. This study contributes to a small but
growing literature on cell phone use in the classroom
(Baker et al. 2012; Campbell 2006; Campbell and Russo
2003; End et al. 2010; Gil.

Mobile phones are a dominant form of information and communication technology, with India ranking second in the
global telecommunication market. Most individuals start using mobile phones from the age of 12 and technology
becomes an integral part of their lives. This research studied the impact of mobile phone use on the academic
performance of secondary school students in the Namsai district of Arunachal Pradesh. The study adopted a
descriptive survey research method with a sample size of 40 students from 4 selected schools, each contributing 5
boys and 5 girls by using stratified random sampling technique. A self-constructed scale with four points, referred to
as a Likert-type scale, entitled "Mobile Phone and Students’ Academic Performance of Secondary School
questionnaire, was employed in order to evaluate the utilization of mobile phones as well as the students’ academic
performance of secondary schools. The study's results showed significant impacts of mobile phone use on the
academic performance of students during the COVID-19 pandemic. It pointed out the negative effects of their usage,
such as distractions in academic work, health issues, and time loss. However, the study establishes that appropriate
usage of cellular device can provide benefits in academic performance.
This study builds on the findings of an extensive quantitative survey, led by the Regional Dialogue on the Information Society and conducted in seven countries across the region including Jamaica. Among the findings was that 93.8% of Jamaicans surveyed were mobile users. The study also yielded rich results in relation to the use of mobile services among youth, finding that they had above average adoption levels of text messaging and other mobile services. In light of this data on Jamaica’s unique situation, this paper seeks to answer the questions: What value-added features and mobile services are young people using and what are they using them for? The goal was to determine how these services and features fulfill needs in their day-to-day lives covering various aspects such as security, social interaction, cost-saving, recreation and commercial activities.

A descriptive study to assess the prevalence of nomophobia and knowledge and effect of using smartphone among college students in Mandi Gobindgarh, Punjab, with a View to develop an information booklet was conducted with the objectives To assess the prevalence of nomophobia among college students, to assess the knowledge level regarding smartphone use among college students, to assess effect of using smartphones among college students, to find the association between level of Nomophobia among college students with their selected demographic variables, to find the association between level of knowledge regarding smartphone among college students with their selected demographic variables, to find out the correlation between level of nomophobia and effect of using mobile phone among college students, to find out the correlation between level of knowledge and effect of using mobile phone among college students.Conceptual framework selected for this study is based on health belief model developed by Rosenstock, Becker and Miama in 1988. It is developed to address non compliance with health screening programs, mostly concerning disease prevention. Three key components were identified as influential aspects towards an individual’s likelihood to following health recommendations.An exploratory research approach with descriptive research design was adopted tor the study. Sample size were 250 college students of District Fatehgarh Saheb Punjab. Colleges are selected convenient by lottery method. Data was collected through nomophobia scale, knowledge questionnaire and checklist. Major findings shows that majority 140 56.06 of samples has moderate level of Nomophobia. 203 81.20 of samples have good knowledge level regarding smartphone, 29 11.6 have poor knowledge level. Majority 188 75.29 of samples has moderate level of effect on their life due to smartphone use, 49 19.6 have mild level of effect.There is significant association between level of nomophobia of samples with years of using mobile phone and there is also a significant association between level of nomophobia of samples with their frequent reason of using mobile phone.The association between level of knowledge of samples with their age is significant at 0.05 level of significance and the association between level of knowledge of samples with their educational level is significant at 0.05 level of significance. There is a positive correlation between levels of nomophobia and effects of using smartphone among college students. There is a negative correlation between levels of knowledge and effects of using smartphone among college students.Recommendations were that a similar study can be conducted among students of other stream and with different usage pattern of smartphone. Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of knowledge and attitude on hazards of mobile phone uses and prevention among nursing adolescents.
Participants and setting: The objective of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of education knowledge and attitude on hazards of mobile phone uses and prevention among adolescents. Descriptive design was adopted and the study was conducted in suryapet. 50 adolescents who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were selected by using non-probability convenient sampling technique.
Intervention: Data was collected regarding demographic variable, knowledge and attitude of the adolescents on hazards of mobile phone uses and prevention. The investigator assessed the level of knowledge and attitude of the adolescents by using structured questionnaire and modified three point Likert Scale and by using checklist through one to one teaching by lecture, demonstration, video clippings and verbalization. Structured teaching programme was conducted on the same day on group wise each group consists of 10 members. Data collection was done in Telugu and English the questionnaire was distributed to each adolescents. At the end of the teaching the doubts were cleared. Then 10 minutes was allotted for discussion.
Measurement and findings: The study revealed that 72% of adolescents had good knowledge and 22% had average knowledge. It was found that majority (80%) of adolescents had positive attitude and 14% had negative attitude towards alcoholism. The effectiveness of programme showed high level of significant at p<0.001 level. It showed that structured teaching programme was an effective method to improve the knowledge and attitude there by the avoiding phone usage.
Conclusion: Adolescents tend to adopt negative attitude towards alcoholism only after they have good knowledge regarding hazards of mobile phone uses and prevention. On the basis of the results of the present study, it may be suggested that youth should be aware regarding the complications and consequences of mobile phone usage.

1. Mobile Phone: Calling and Texting College Students
in Pakistan
Abstract:
This paper qualitatively investigated the mobile phone calling and
texting patterns among youth in Pakistan. Initially, the data was gathered from
seventy seven (n=77) college students aged 17-21 years, who completed twenty
four hours mobile phone communication diaries. Completed communication
diaries were followed by twenty three in-depth interviews with the college students
to collect detailed background information. Study results revealed congruity of
SMS and calling patterns among male and female youth. This research discovered
that the majority of youth is extremely high user, fond of texting and low user of
voice calls. This research unfolded that the youth do most of the mobile phones
communications within their age group, communicate in both positive and negative
ways. However, majority of mobile phone communications among youth could be
categorized as problematic with reference to the place, time, and purpose.
1. Introduction and Theoretical Background
Growing benefits of mobile phones are undeniable and many Studies highlighted
advantages of mobile phone use, such as young people form and support
relationships with others (Horstmanshof, 2004), widening social networks due to
ease of contact (Srivastava, 2005) , sense of security and safety among the of
mobile phone users as users can contact others in case of emergency (Harper,
2001) , social gratification of youths from mobility, access and convenience (Tjong
et al, 2003), busy working parents are better able to communicate with their
children (Frissen and Matthews, 2000,2004) redirecting trips that have already
started, softening and changing of schedules, and progressive refinement of an
activity, such as filling in details of open-ended plans through mobile phones
communication. Even deaf people can better communicate with each other through
SMS (Power and Power, 2004).
A study conducted by James and (Drennan, 2005) in Brisbane, Australia revealed
that usage rate among the students were high ranging from 1.5 Hours to 5 Hours
per day, and an average bill per month were $140, which is very expensive given
the low student pocket money. However, another study by (Matthews, 2004)found
that Australian adolescents are the low users of the mobile phones, with 97% of
teenagers mobile phone users making fewer than five calls per day and 85% using
SMS fewer than five times per day (Matthews, 2004) .
2. Work of (Ling, 2005) shows linkage between adolescent criminality and mobile
telephone use. Heavy users of mobile telephone are over represented among those
who are involved in various forms of deviance such as, fighting, alcohol and
narcotics use, various forms of theft, etc (Ling, 2005). School, College and
University students use mobiles during their classes (Srivastava, 2005)Youth often
use mobile phone while driving, which is a considerable safety risk ((McEvoy et
al. 2005)).Therefore, it is vital to understand the calling and texting patterns of the
youth and issues linked with their consumption in the contemporary societies.
According to a study conducted by James and (Drennan, 2005)one of the major
negative consequences of addictive mobile phone use is financial cost or really
expensive mobile phone bills. Apart from the significant financial issues, study
uncovered a wide range of negative consequences for addictive mobile phone
consumers such as damaged relationships, emotional stress and falling literacy
(James and Drennan 2005). According to (Griffiths and Renwick 2003)Young
mobile phone consumers experience great level of phone bills debt, which leads to
the financial worries for some young adults (Griffiths and Renwick (2003) ).
(Aoki &Downes 2003 ) examined mobile phone consumption among college
students in USA, through focus groups and survey studies.
Although, all schools formally restrict mobile phones in the classrooms, but most
students do use email during classes occasionally. It is common for students to
bring their mobile phones in the classes, claiming that they use only clock function.
Although, students do not use voice communication during classes, but they read
and sometimes send messages during classes. Students use mobile phone most
frequently during the lunch time hour and immediately after school, as pupils
desperately want to get in touch to their friends (Ito, 2006)Using mobile phones
may also help young people gain and maintain peer group acceptance (Cova,
1994)proposed that to satisfy their desire for communities, youth seek products
less for their own use value than for their linking value.
1.1 Information about the Pakistan’s Telecom sector and Objectives of the
Study
Pakistan has emerged as one of the fastest growing mobile markets among the
developing nations. In September, 2009 cellular mobile services were available in
7011 cities, towns and villages with network coverage of almost 90% of the total
population. According to a report issued in September, 2009 total subscribers have
reached 90.3 million, which is 58% of the total population. However, the trend in
subscriptions remained tilted towards prepaid subscriptions with 98% prepaid and
only 2% postpaid subscriptions (Mehran, 2009).
3. At present, five Cellular Mobile Telecom Operators (CMTOs) are working in
Pakistan. Intense competition among these telecom companies has led to drastic
reduction in the tariffs thereby bringing it within the purchasing power of the
common man, thus enabling him to acquire this much desired facility (Qizilbash,
2007).Likewise other contemporary societies, youth in Pakistan has also rapidly
adopted the mobile phone technology. The adolescent and youth are recognized as
one of the largest, attractive and most productive users of mobile phone
technology. Although, the most updated figures are not available, but in 2004
young people aged 15-24 were estimated 36 million which is about 22% of the
total Pakistani population (Sultana, 2006).
Most of the telecom operators’ prepaid packages are targeted to youth, because of
their heavy mobile phone use. However, there is no research in the Pakistani
context regarding the calling and texting behavior of youth. Thus, this study
intends to meet the following objectives.
(i) To explore the texting and calling behavior of the college students.
(ii) To investigate and analyze the problematic consumption behaviors among
college students.
2. Methodology
The present exploratory study took place in Rawalpindi, Pakistan by using
qualitative research approach. The data generated could afterward be tested by
applying any quantitative approach by using a larger sample size. To accomplish
study objectives multi-method approach was used. So, the primary data for the
current study comes from the following two sources.

Table one shows that Nine participants (11.68%) did not receive any call and
fourteen (18.18%) did not make any call on the diary day. Thirty five students
(45%) received calls of only 1-15 minutes and twenty four (31%) dialed calls of
only 1-15 minutes. Nine respondents (11.68%) received and fourteen respondents
dialed calls of 31-45 minutes, which is a moderate use of voice calls. Only four
study participants (5.20%) received and dialed calls of 46-60 minutes. Only Seven
participants (9%) received and six participants (7.8%) made calls of more than an
hour
Table two shows that forty two participants (54%) received and thirty seven
students (48%) dialed 1-4 calls. Fifteen students (19%) received and twelve
participants (15.6%) dialed 5-8 calls on the diary day. Only four participants (5%)
received and seven (9%) dialed calls in the range of 9-12. Total seven participants
(9%) received and dialed either 13 or more calls on the diary day .
Table three shows that average received calls by male students were 4.3 and per
female students were 4.1 on the diary day. Average number of dialed calls by the
male students remained 3.9 and by female students 3.4. This suggests a low use of
4. mobile phone voice calls among the majority of participants. However, students
reported an incredibly high rate of SMS communications on the diary day. Average
number of SMS received by a male student remained 98.4 and by a female 85.7.
Similarly average number of text messages sent remained almost same among
male and female. Male students sent 109.5 and female students sent 98.2 text
messages on the diary day
5. Conclusion:
Although, mobile phone communications have benefited the contemporary
societies, but the negative aspects of this technology cannot be ignored. Youth
mostly indulge themselves intentionally or unintentionally in the inappropriate use
of mobile phone. Similarly, telecom operators consciously or unconsciously show
TV advertisements and offer packages which encourage misuse of mobile phone
voice calls and text messages among youth.
Since, mobile phone use is increasing among Pakistani youth, but no efforts are
made to protect the vulnerable high users from the negative consequences,
inappropriate and excessive use of mobile phone technology by the telecom
companies. Thus, there is a great need to educate the youth about appropriate and
inappropriate mobile phone use in relation to the time, place, and purpose of
communication. Telecom regulatory body in Pakistan (Pakistan
Telecommunication Authority-PTA) should take an initiative to educate youth
about right and wrong use of mobile phone. There could be different ways to
educate youth firstly: PTA can start a campaign in education institutions or deliver
messages through TV commercials. Second way could be to regulate telecom
companies for educating youth about the appropriate mobile phone use.
