Qualitative study
Interviews study
 Sample:
 17 participants (13 females & 4 males; 20-34
years: n=9; 35-49 years: n=5; 50-65+ years:
n=3);
 Main findings:
 Desire to tan and attributed a high value to acquire a
tanned appearance over holiday;
 Sufficient knowledge how to perform sun-protection
behaviour;
 Strategies such as planning and reminders were
identified as facilitators;
 Key barriers were: the impact of on the holiday
experiences, the fear of social consequences,
inconvenience of sun protection and lack of
facilities/resources (e.g. shade, sunscreen);
‘A tan is worth a thousand words’
The miskin app
The mISkin mobile-phone application
Users’ feedback
User engagement study
 Sample:
 17 participants (13 females & 4 males; 20-34
years: n=9; 35-49 years: n=5; 50-65+ years:
n=3) provided feedback on the app features
and design.
 Main findings:
 All participants were satisfied with the
prototype and expressed willingness to use
it.
 Minor changes: customisable prompts with
suggestions, shortened videos, skin cancer
The pilot study
The study…
 Who can participate?
 Holidaymakers travelling for up to 2 weeks;
 ≥18 years old;
 Own an Android™ or iOS (iPhone; iPad)
mobile device.
Findings
 Participants characteristics
 42 participants (December 2012 to October 2013)
 Age: 35.5 years (SD= 9.7 years; range: 21-58)
 Gender: 76.2% female
 Most frequent holiday destinations:
 Spain (N=12; 28.6%)
 France (N=5; 11.9%)
 USA (N=5; 11.9%)
 Turkey (N=4; 9.5%)
 Greek Islands (N=4; 9.5%)
Findings: Acceptability and Feasibility
 Two main problems for recruitment
 Having another type of smartphone (e.g. iPhone);
 Willingness to be randomised to SPF15 or SPF30
 Acceptability of trial procedures
 Allocation to SPF
 Acceptability of mISkin intervention
 Majority was satisfied with the app
 Suggestions about possible ways of improving the
mISkin app:
 ‘Sun Alert Service’: possibility of having a systems that is able
to learn participants sun protection habits, preferences and
personal risks to sunburn, and personalise prompts according
to these (e.g. time until sunburn risk).

Editor's Notes

  1. well I’m sure we’ve all been on holidays before to somewhere sunny and hot and had people asking us when we come back about how is was and saying you’ve not have a tan, did you enjoy your self? Or you don’t look like you’ve been on holidays. So unless you bring back a tan, is like you’ve not even been on holidays and that’s it you’re not allowed to say anything more. But… what do we mean by sun-protection?
  2. But… what do we mean by sun-protection? Cover up strategies Avoid midday sun Why are we talking about sun-protection? Joke about weather in uk
  3. One of highest rates of skin cancer, even though this is highly to due to skin type that main be other reasons for this phenomenon Despite the weather, The UK has one of the highest rates of skin cancers in Europe. Seventh most common cancer in the uk.
  4. Unlike what happens with other forms of cancer, and the number of people who develop skin cancer is Why is this?
  5. And because we like to go on holidays to sunny places; 30% of annual exposure in just 2-weeks holidays The UK has one of the highest rates of skin cancers in Europe; Intensive sun-exposure over a short period of time is very common.
  6. 30%
  7. So the question is : how do we go about and develop such intervention? What I will show is an example of the process we’ve taken to develop and evaluate an intervention to promote sun-protection.
  8. This is the flow chart of how we’ve developed the intervention. I will talk briefly about each stage during my talk
  9. So the first step we took in this area was to look into ALL the studies conducted previously in the area. So I’ve searched read all studies, paper, books in the field. And what did we find out? Well… Actually what I found was that most studies are still far from knowing how to best promote sun-protection in holidays setting. However, there were some studies that seemed more successful than others and that what related to the kind of strategies they were using to motivate people. So, we’ve found out that showing people a very specific kind of photos made them more aware of the DANGER of sun-exposure.
  10. UV photographs are an excellent WAY OF SHOWING sun damage
  11. UV photographs are an excellent means to display sun damage in the form of mottled pigmentation. Dark spots on UV photographs indicate sun damage, with more and larger spots indicating greater damage. Seeing the DAMAGE caused to your skin seems to be a POWERFUL method of motivating people to use sun protection!! Cos they can visualise the effects in their skin
  12. Aim: This qualitative study aimed to investigate perceptions of sun-related experiences and the relevant behavioural domain determinants of sun-protection behaviours
  13. Based on the findings from the systematic review and the qualitative interviews we’ve developed an app that will support holidaymakers being sunsmart
  14. What we did next was to use this information into developing a mobile phone app that could help holidaymakers stay safe in the sun Describe each menu Written info, uv photo, individual format, delivered during participants' holidays abroad Content: written material, videos (NHS choices), UV photo, interactive (quiz), cues
  15. mISkin prototype and expressed willingness to use it. Minor changes were introduced to optimise acceptability (e.g. customisable prompts, shortened videos). Also, all participants provided positive feedback about the app design, stating that background image and colour scheme were appealing.
  16. At the moment we are testing the app to see it helps people changing behaviour
  17. Most frequent holiday destinations were: Spain (N=12; 28.6%); France (N=5; 11.9%); USA (N=5; 11.9%); Turkey (N=4; 9.5%) and Greek Islands (N=4; 9.5%). Additionally, most frequent holiday durations were: more than 14 days (N=15; 35.7%); 8-14 days (N=9; 21.4%); 8 days (N=9; 21.4%) and less than 8 days (N=9; 21.4%).
  18. All participants who provided consent to participate, completed baseline and follow up assessments (including skin swabs). Residual weight of sunscreen bottles was obtained for 41 participants (97.6%) Online questionnaires were completed by Baseline: 90.4% (N=38) Follow up: 97.6% (N=41) 2 breaks in protocols: 2 people were randomised to intervention, but app couldn’t be installed (problems with phones) This study is still running, so this is working in progress. But at the moment there seems to be evidence supporting the study procedures and the miskin app as a feasible way to promote sun safety in holidaymakers. High participant retention and participants’ feedback suggested good acceptance and feasibility of intervention and trial procedures. Baseline and follow up assessments (including skin swabs) were completed by all participants who provided consent to participate. Residual weight of sunscreen bottles provided by the research team was obtained for 41 participants (97.6%) and online questionnaires were completed by 90.4% (N=38) at baseline and 97.6% (N=41) at follow up.
