Capital One Corporate Structure
Capital One is a banking company that is focused on credit cards and consumer loans. The
company also has some minor international operations in Canada and the UK, primarily in the
credit card business. The company breaks down its business as follows. Credit cards are the major
source of income, accounting for $10.4 billion in revenue, or 64% of the total revenue for the
company. Consumer banking accounts for 31% of the revenue, commercial banking a further 10%
of the revenue, and the company has negative revenue on other businesses. The credit cardbusiness
is the most profitable, generating $2.277 billion in profit, or 70% of the company s total net
income. Consumer banking accounted for 25% of total net income, while commercial banking
accounted for 16% of total net income.
The company has recently made moves to build its retail banking business and its credit card
business. In 2012, Capital One completed the purchase of ING Direct USA, a deal that added
$80 billion in deposits to the company s balance sheet. It then added HSBC s US credit card
business. This move added $28 billion worth of credit card assets to the company s portfolio.
These acquisitions were substantial in nature $9 billion for ING and $31.3 billion for HSBC (No
author, 2012). They indicate that the primary focus for growth at Capital One is to build on its core
businesses. Such expansion of its two largest businesses indicates that Capital One is more
interested in focus there than in expanding

Information Technology Management
Chapter 1 1. How are information systems transforming business and what is their relationship to
globalization?
E mail, online conferencing, and cell phones have become essential tools for conducting business.
Information systems are the foundation of fast paced supply chains. The Internet allows many
businesses to buy, sell, advertise, and solicit customer feedback online. Organizations are trying to
become more competitive and efficient by digitally enabling their core business processes and
evolving into digital firms. The Internet has stimulated globalization by dramatically reducing the
costs of producing, buying, and selling goods on a global scale. New information system trends
include the emerging mobile digital platform, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The disciplines contributing to the behavioral approach focusing on the design, implementation,
management, and business impact of systems are psychology, sociology, and economics. A
sociotechnical view of systems considers both technical and social features of systems and solutions
that represent the best fit between them.
Chapter 2 1. What are business processes? How are they related to information systems?
A business process is a logically related set of activities that defines how specific business tasks are
performed, and it represents a unique way in which an organization coordinates work, information,
and knowledge. Managers need to pay attention to business processes because they determine how
well the organization can execute its business, and they may be a source of strategic advantage.
There are business processes specific to each of the major business functions, but many business
processes are cross functional. Information systems automate parts of business processes, and they
can help organizations redesign and streamline these processes. 2. How do systems serve the
different management groups in a business?
Systems serving operational management are transaction processing systems (TPS), such as payroll
or order processing, that track the flow of the daily routine

Jimmy s Four Types Of Intellectual Property
There are four types of intellectual property rights and the law recognizes your right to own this
intellectual property. Jimmy is able to use trademark, patent, and trade secret for his invention.
Jimmy is able to trademark AreYouThere? , this is his distinguished slogan for his machine to
determine if someone is a zombie and should protect his unique name. Although it is not necessary
to apply with the government to obtain the rights to a trademark, it is advantageous to register it.
The advantages of registering your trademark are having exclusive national rights to use it for
your goods, the ability to not allow importation into the U.S. of goods that bear this mark, and also
the right to sue in federal court. The second intellectual property right that Jimmy can utilize is a
patent. A utility patent provides protection for his invention. Jimmy will have to file a patent
application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark office. A patent is good for 20 years as long as the
person or company pays the periodic maintenance fees that are required. The third... Show more

A Raisin In The Sun Walter Lee Quotes
Walter Lee is one of the main characters in the play called A Raisin In the Sun. In the play
Walter shows signs of selfishness, anxiety, and bravery. In the first act of the play Walter is very
concerned about the arrival of a check his mother is receiving because of her husband as part of
her life Insurance. He wakes up in the morning and the first thing he asks his wife is if the check
is coming in the next day. In the story Walter says, Check coming today? . The reason for his
desperateness is because he wants to use the money the check provides to invest money in a liquor
store he wants to start with two friends.
In the first act of the play Walter begins to talk about the arrival of the check. He tells his wife
Ruth to talk to his mom about the liquor store he wants to start because she will listen more to
her than him. In the story Walter says, Mama would listen to you. You know she listen to you
more than she do me and Bennie . This quote from Walter states that he is using his mother s
loyalty and kindness to his wife to benefit him, he is only thinking about himself. In the play

Art In Art, Art And The Art Of Art
Drawing is not an activity, but a piece of me that I could never let go of. Drawing has transformed
itself from a fun hobby into an essential form of expression. It has transformed the way I look at
things; nothing is mundane in art. A tree, for example, is a beautiful thing. Every single tree is
unique, with its own bark texture, its own arrangement of branches, and its own color. The limit
only gets pushed further when the tree inherits the personality of its artistic creator. Whenever I feel
emotionally connected to something, I generally have an impulse to draw it, which strengthens the
connection. Both the result and the process are rewarding; it is always possible to improve,
challenge, and discuss with other artists. There aren t always right ways to draw things, which
allows illustration to evolve throughout time. One room: a dancing lion, a painting cat, and a
programming dragon. A normal scene for those in the furry community, found at conventions
around the world. The furry community is a network comprised largely of artists and engineers, all
joined by their interest in artistic media and anthropomorphic animals. Fursuits, which are very
similar to mascot costumes, garner the most attention in public media; however, there are many
illustrators, writers, programmers, and musicians creating furry media. All of them are essential to
the continued existence of the community. Many furries have anthropomorphized characters based
on themselves called fursonas.

Jackie Robinson Obstacles
Jackie Robinson was one of the most influential sports athletes in history who overcame many
obstacles in his life. Throughout Jackie s career he had to deal with many racist comments and
death threats. Despite the racist comments and threats Jackie was still able to break the Color
Barrier and become one of the best ball players to ever play. Jackie was born on January 31,
1919 in Cairo, GA. Jackie was born to Mallie and Jerry Robinson, and was the youngest of five
children (Edgar, Frank, Mack, and Willa Mae). When Jackie was only six months old his father
left the family. His mother moved the family to Pasadena, CA in hopes to give them a better life.
As a young boy he was very proud of his mother as he has stated, I remember, even as a small
boy, having a lot of pride in my mother. (Scott 21).This shows that Jackie truly had pride in his
mother. He admired her because she was able to do many things, work hard, never complained,
and always made them feel happy. As a youth and a teenager Jackie frequently got into trouble.
He was involved in a gang of local boys and often had to report to the police station. Several
people befriended him and inspired him to change his ways and he become a better person. He
enrolled in high school, and then college, where he became an excellent athlete. He competed in
all types of sports and became very competitive. With all the support he was given, including his
brothers, he became very aggressive at the sports he was playing, and was

Analysis Of Lolita s Tehran, And Fidelity
When entering this unit of postmodernism, my only thoughts were of a reluctant nature. I
pessimistically expected only disagreement and frustration from reading the works of Life of Pi,
Reading Lolita in Tehran, and Fidelity. However, my initial expectations were completely and
thankfully wrecked. Though the philosophies of both Martel and Nafisi contradict my own, there
are endless gems of insight to be plundered from their writings. These postmodern works emphasize
where we as humans find our identity and how religionplays into that identity. Contrary to my
presumptions, I learned so much from reading these novels woven with postmodernists thought and
can say with confidence that I am a better and more educated person for having read them.
Postmodernism is not a wholly cohesive ideology that can be covered in a single blanket statement.
It is more of an umbrella that contains many miscellaneous modern conceptions of things. (Uhhhh
citation, idrk) There is an over arching theme, however, that rejects objective truth. This belief
would argue that truth can be constructed by each person individually. For Pi, this meant his house
could be a temple for gods from Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam (Martel 45 46). It did not matter
that those religions were not congruous, he just wanted to love God (Martel 69). His truth was that
all religions are true (Martel 69). Nafisi similarly creates her own truth in her living room which
became [her] sanctuary, [her] self contained

Extra Sensory Perception Argumentative Analysis
Introduction
When it comes to the topic of technology advancement, some people will readily agree that it is bad
for humankind. Where this argument usually ends, however, is on the question of if it really is
benefitting the human race and the planet. On one hand, about 54% of American adults say that
technology has had mostly positive effects on them (Paul). On the other hand, about 8% of
American adults say that technology has had mostly negative effects on them (Paul). The other
38% say that technology has had an equal mix of positive effects and negative effects on them
(Paul). In the Extra Sensory Perception article , the author approaches this topic through a futuristic

Early man s ability to make, control, and manipulate fire was a landmark catalyst in the
development of the human species. Fire gave man crucial tools to aid survival, improving quality
of life as well as lengthening the average lifespan (McKenna). Aside from the intermediate and
tangible improvements fire brought to the lives of the early man, it also was key in cultural
development; it gave early groups another skill by which distinguish members, and also helped
facilitate the creation and spread of spoken language (McKenna). Considering all that fire
contributed to the lives of the earliest humans, it may very well be the most important innovation in
the history of man. Controlled fire may very well be the most important innovation in history,
but there are many more inventions that benefited humans and society. Paul Ranter, a writer and
filmmaker expresses how paper, which was invented around 100 B.C. in China, has been
indispensable in allowing people to write down and share ideas then and now. Adding on to this
topic, the wheel is one of the world s greatest inventions. It was very helpful for moving heavy
objects and helped the Mesopotamian advance in transportation. Without this invention, we
would not be nearly as advanced as we are today in the automobile or transportation industries.
The Sumerians were the first to make this wheel. It benefited them because for a short period of
time they were the only society with a wheel. They took advantage of this and used it against
other civilizations that didn t have access to the wheel to conquer new lands and territories ( The
Wheel ). This is one reason why the wheel was one of the of best inventions ever made. It provided
advancements for societies in ancient civilizations and continues to do the same for societies today.
There is also electricity that is also one of the biggest and most important inventions in

Persuasive Speech On Life In Our Life
Inhale. Exhale. Breathe. It appears that you have taken one step closer to death. Death is all
around us; the air we breathe every day, hour, minute, second is crucial to our survival. However,
air can be seen as a double edge sword. Air, is what is keeping us alive, for if we stopped breathing,
we would die of suffocation. On the other hand, the longer we breathe, the closerwe are towards
death. In this sense, a burning what if question has been on my mind: what if the air we are
breathing is a poison that is slowly killing us? Think about that. If this were to be true? What have
you done...or plan to do that makes breathing this poisonous air worthy?
Many people today waste much of their life doing useless things. They do not realize that each
breath they spend on the couch or dreaming of things they could do, they are wasting their
opportunity to really do something. Let me break this down for you. Life expectancy for a
typically American is about 79 years or 948 months. Of those 79 years, 1/3 of the time is spent
sleeping, leaving us with about 632 months. After taking into consideration factors such as eating,
using the restroom, and browsing the internet, we are left with roughly 19 years to live. 19 years
may seem like a lot, but that is only about 24% of your life that is actually in your hands. After
finding out these surprising stats, I began to rethink my life. I looked a little closer around the
community I grew up in and realized that there was a huge need within my community.
I first began to get involved within my community eighth grade year through the Community
Thanksgiving Meal. At first, I did not realize that all the people coming in for a meal or the
places that needed a delivery was all just right within my community. As the years went by, I
slowly became more and more involved. I started from only coming in on Thanksgiving Day to
help to being there every step of the way. I remember volunteering to coordinate a clothing drive
last year to give clothes to those in need during the Thanksgiving Meal. At the end of that
Thanksgiving Day, a lady comes up to me and asks if she could grab a few extra items. The lady
had on a thin coat and I immediately knew that she needed help. I ran and

A Research Done By Morelli, Rameson, And Lieberman About...
Various articles and literature works coupled with the ongoing happenings clearly indicate that
happiness has no price tag. Since the beginning of human evolution, there has been a saying that
money cannot buy anyone happiness. Happiness refers to emotions, and it is dependent on people
s choices (Landau, 2008). Finding oneself in a place where material properties and social status are
crucial, many people s happinessin such cases would be dependent on these things. For the purpose
of understanding this issue, this paper critically analyses a researchdone by Morelli, Rameson, and
Lieberman about happiness.
Question 1: The Research methods
First, there is the observational method. The researchers used the observational method to
identifying how certain characters tend to be influenced by environmental changes. For instance,
the researchers review the study conducted by Morelli and Lieberman, where the volunteers were
instructed to look at pictures at their free time and memorize the eight digits assigned to them by
the researchers. Some individuals showed reduced empathy, while others were able to feel things
deeply (Kluger, 2013). This kind of research methodology is mainly concerned with psychological
or behavioral traits of the study population.
Generally, observations are cheap, and the researcher uses few resources in conducting the
research. Conversely, observations consume a lot of time since researchers have to wait for the
observational traits of the

without getting the pearl because in order to escape hades he has to get the pearl. Once he got
the pearl he tells his teammates to go because he cares about them and he won t leave his

dragon wants to stop Percy Jackson and kill him because they think he has the lighting bolt.
However, Percy Jackson faces the dragon and leaps him at bay. By getting the pearl and almost
getting killed by the dragon, he just risked his life by doing that. Him and his teammate killed the
dragon and escaped, which shows that he is brave and will not stop until he completes his
mission. This passage relates to the ability to complete a mission that seems impossible

Cultural Diversity For A Haitian Client
Cultural Diversity Assignment Haitian Every year a large group of Haitians come into the United
States and may become a part of the health care system. In the challenging field of nursing, nurses
need to be aware of cultural differences and should provide each client with cultural competent
care. Each and every year, Haitians enter this country legally and illegally but regardless of how
they enter the US, it is inevitable that they will need to be cared for at some time in their life. The
astute nurse must understand the need for cultural sensitivity and what to assess for prior to

Depending on social class, the Haitian client can either be future oriented or past and present
oriented. The time orientation of the client will determine if they are going to be more inclined or
less inclined to follow treatment regimens. When providing culturally competent health care for the
Haitian client, the nurse must recognize the nontraditional health beliefs of the client and the health
practices that arise as a result. In addition, the nurse must also maintain a nonjudgmental attitude
about these beliefs. The nurse should incorporate Haitian folk practices into the treatment plans as
long as they are not harmful and desired by the client. Folk medicine and treatments can be used in
addition to traditional western health treatments. The nurse must also be aware of the health risks
of Haitian Americans when providing care. According to Holcomb (1996), sexually transmitted
diseases, cancer, and tuberculosis are the most common health conditions affecting Haitians and
Haitian Americans (p. 257). With that being said, the nurse should teach the Haitian client about the
importance of primary prevention and how it is a valuable component of a healthy lifestyle.
Pregnancy care in the Haitian client is another aspect of nursing. Haitian women do not seek out
prenatal care, which can be troublesome with having a healthy pregnancy. It is estimated that 80%
of pregnant women in Haiti attend

Descriptive Essay On The Shore
Venture Down The Shore If The shirt before the shirt , GTL , and DTS sound familiar then you
were an MTV Jersey Shore fan, a reality show set at Seaside Heights, New Jersey. Although The
Shore, which is a local term for the New Jersey Shore, has a reputation for being trashy, especially
after the show, it is actually a family friendly vacation spot. Considering that it has a clean beach,
an amazing boardwalk with an amusement park and water park, quaint shops, and iconic
landmarks, it is no wonder that the New JerseyShore is a favorite summer vacation spot. When I
was a teenager, my family took a vacation on the east coast. I was fortunate enough to have cool
parents that let the teenagers pick some places to visit. Since we were all fans of the Jersey Shore
show and so close to New Jersey, all the teenagers begged to go to The Shore . I expected it to be
a cool, hip place with the MTV stars all around. The Shore looks similar to other beach cities. It
has a calm, relaxing feel to it. It has the beautiful, blue skies and ocean breezes. It has sunbathers,
surfers, boogie boarders, and beachcombers. However, there is a fee to go on the beach in
addition to the parking fee, which was a surprise for us, but it is The Shore . The beach is clean
with white sand and blue water. Unlike California beaches, it is usually not crowded (probably
because they charge people). There are places to rent snorkeling gear and boogie boards. The
excitement comes from the boardwalk. It

Essay On English Reflection
Semester One English Reflection
August 17, 2017; also known as my first day of officially naming myself a high school student at
Lindbergh High School. I walked into my fourth hour, English 1 Honors, not knowing what I
would encounter within the next four months of my academic career. English (until now)
remained my best and most favorite subject ever since I could remember, however, this year I
began to feel the challenge I have always needed, especially with the new grading system.
Standard based grading consists of grading each individual category us students consistently remain
expected to learn, and master this year. Categories like speaking and listening, reading, writing, and
habits of learning . Throughout semester one, I showed an increase of my weaknesses within the
categories of speaking and listening and habits of learning while I showed an increase of my
strengths in the categories reading and writing.
To begin, the first semester of my high school experience as a whole seemed very stressful. By this
I mean, completing my work along with adapting to listening to the new teaching styles and
getting over my biggest fear speaking in front of the class. Although, anything takes time to get
used to, English illustrates a perfect example. As I stated before, the standard based grading
system needed some time to get used to, along with the expectations and requirements of honors
versus regular. As time went on, my grades show that I never really got used to this. During term
one, my habits of learning average ended with an average of 91%. At this time, I realized the
level of difficulty English would endure, so I put more effort into it... at the time. During term
two, my habits of learning average went down to a 76%. The biggest reason, while in English
there consisted a large amount of classwork, it meant an increased amount of classwork for other
classes as well. After reviewing this, I feel very disappointed with how my efforts towards
academic responsibility weakened, making one of my goals to put forth more effort during
semester two. As I said before, high school alone pulled out a magnificent amount of stress, not
helped by one of my weakest categories ever since I started school consisted of

The Impact Of Television On American Society
The invention of television has impacted American society positively, because it helps spread
information faster and influences the way people think about important social issues. It is
estimated that about 15 million Americans watch the Cable News Network, CNN, at least once
a day and millions more tune in abroad (Stark). In the news culture, information has become
presented to the public quicker throughout the years. This causes news to be digested faster as
well. In fact, events, such as election results or political choices, have become frequently
analyzed before they even take place. For example, the effects of Clinton s bombing of Iraq, in the
summer of 1996, were being explored before a weapon had even been fired (Stark). The spread...

When television was first developed, entertainment was not one of the main priorities.
Throughout the years, however, people began to sit and watch television just for that reason.
Soon came the development of special programs, sitcoms, and even reality television which
served as entertainment purposes. Throughout the years, entertainment on television has
become much more popular. It has become an important part of our entertainment today. The
average amount of hours per day that television is on in an average U.S. home is six hours and

for entertainment purposes. Sumner Redstone, president and CEO of the major media company
Viacom, quotes, I am very skeptical of this talk of 500 channels. I just don t know what s going
to play on them ( 1920 s 1960 s Television ). Nowadays, however, it is extremely common to scroll
through television channels and always end up finding something interesting. Not only is there
a large variety of shows that Americans can now watch, it is more convenient than driving to
movies, concerts, sporting events, and plays and it is cheaper as well. With modern day
television people do not have to get dressed up and drive to see what they could be watching on
their own TV sets at home. This is why television companies have adapted to meet the needs of
the American people by supplying access to all of these events. This past summer television again
proved its convenience for entertainment, as many Americans were able to sit back and watch the
Olympics in their own homes while still being able to get the feel of what is it like there.
Television also brings communities together. Many neighborhood block parties revolve around
watching the latest episode of a show. When the super bowl comes around, there are parties

Aging Population Issues Paper
I believe the most pressing issue facing the aging population on a daily basis is financial security
while living on a fixed income. Aging individuals sources of income include Social Security,
employment, private pensions, and assets. The median household income for those 65 and older
in 2007 was only $27, 798 (Hooyman Kiyak, 2011). I chose financial security as the most pressing
issue facing the older population because it influences several other areas. Sources of income for
the agingpopulation are sometimes insufficient to maintain proper housing, may cause health
problems, and restricts access to nursing homes and assisted living facilities. The difficulty that the
lack of financial security can pose for an aging individual leads... Show more content on

A variety of long term care options are available to those who require more assistance. Assisted
living facilities, village concepts, and Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs) are all
available options for seniors. Living in these residencies may address several other issues such as
isolation, transportation, and mobility. These types of facilities focus on providing assistance
with daily living activities for the elderly while still allowing them to be independent. Residents
also have ample opportunities to socialize in common spaces such as dining rooms and living
rooms. However, these facilities are often expensive and must be paid for privately. As a result, the
option for living in these helping facilities may be out of reach for the elderly with a fixed income

lower incomes who must remain in their homes may face challenges related to their health,

West Broadway, Or `` D Street ``
West Broadway, or D Street , is a state sponsored housing development in South Boston,
Massachusetts, whose history is plagued by delinquency, violence, and death. Constructed in
1949, on a newly acquired 25 acre plot in Southie s Lower End , West Broadway Housing
Development was to serve as temporary housing for veterans of the World Wars. By the early
1970s, however, the development would be 972 apartments for low income families, and would be
known as the worst type of lower class welfare housing. Built on South Bostons solid, naturally
formed land, as opposed to the neighborhood s man made areas, coupled with its proximity to the
downtown district, D Street is home to prime location in the community and the City of Boston....

As Michael Patrick McDonald contends, South Bostonians think of Southie as the best place in the
world , and there is a silence that consumes the residents when it comes to discussing the woes of
the past. And in such a physically and culturally secluded area of the City of Boston, it is unlikely
that anything the citizens are not willing to discuss would be otherwise recorded. In speaking of
lost history, it is important to question the history far beyond the past 60 years. It is widely known
that Native Americans inhabited the Boston dating back 6,000 years. Nonetheless, many of their
artifacts have been lost over the years. However, over the past two years, Native American artifacts
have been discovered in the Andrew Square section of South Boston, not far from D Street. While it
is likely that most artifacts are lost forever because of the disregard for the area during development
in the 1950s, further exploration may be able to call attention to a distant history. Andrew Square
too went through radical development throughout the 20th century with no mention of Native
American presence, and I have not personally come across any literature concerning Indian history
in relation to South Boston or immediate areas, such as the Polish

Protests In Antigone By Sophocles
Throughout Antigone, Sophocles develops the idea of emotion in protests through the actions of
Antigone. Antigone, angry at Creon s refusal to bury her dead brother, decides to protest and go
against the rule of the state. Creon responds in return, rashly sentencing Antigone to death. At the
end, the play ends in tragedy, with Creons son Haemon, Creon s wife, and Antigoneall dead from
their emotionally driven choices. Throughout his play, Sophoclesdevelops the idea of pathos in
protests, showing that emotions are the driving force in starting many protests, the use of pathos is
essential if the protest wishes to grow and gather a following, and that relying on simply pathos and
emotions will lead to the failure of the protest without... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Throughout the play, Sophocles presents the great power pathos has on swaying the minds of
people, and the great importance it has in allowing a protest to flourish. When looking at the
chorus, it is clear the necessity pathos has in convincing others to join your side. When Antigone
is sentenced to death, the chorus says, In all her lovely strength she traded the light of day for the
bolted brazen vault buried within her tomb, her bridal chamber, wed to the yoke and broken. But
she was of glorious birth my child, my child (l.1036 1040). The positive light that the chorus
shines onto Antigone, is a stark contrast to how they portrayed Antigone as a wretched child in the
beginning. The reason for this sudden change is evident when the chorus mentions Antigone s
current dire situation. By apealing to the people s emotions through her actions of being
sentenced to death, Antigone suceeds in gaining support that she would not have had without the
use of pathos. A modern example of the use of pathos being vital in drawing people in to a
protest could be seen throught the Civil Rights Movement led by Maritn Luther King Jr. His use
of pathos shines through in his Letter from Birmingham Jail , where he writes, As you seek to
explain to your six year old daughter why she can t go to the public

International Law And The European Union
The European Union is a unique political organisation with its own law making powers; it presents
a massive constitutional fabric on the individual member states identity. One of the essential ideals
of the European Community Treaty (EC) is to breakdown trade barriers, including taxes, by
individual Member States; it also defines the basic principles of political and economic factors in
the European Union. The EC Treaty does not give any clear terms when dealing with public
procurement; legislation is based on aims of the EC Treaty, in particular the free movement of

2.2 Development of Procurement Policy
The supremacy of European Law was first established in 1964 when the European Court of Justice

institutions, its own personality, its own legal capacity and capacity of representation on the
international plain and, more particularly, real powers stemming from a limitation of sovereignty or
a transfer of powers from the States to the Community, the Member States have limited their
sovereign rights, albeit within limited fields, and have thus created a body of law which binds both
their nationals and themselves. The purpose of the procurement Directives is to encourage open
and transparent competition which is delivered through competitive tendering throughout the
European Union. The Directives do this by applying these core principles of procurement policy:

Often when people think of Olympic host cities, they conjure up massive cities in their minds.
Lake Placid does not align with that ideal. We prefer the term village to city. Because of our

The Impact Of Digital Technology On The Creation Of...
Henry Jenkins describes convergence as a situation where multiple media systems coexist and
where media content flows fluidly across them (2006: 282). An important part of the information
transferred across platforms are the techniques utilised in creation. Digital technologies have no
doubt had a large impact on moving images and how they are developed and produced in the
modern world. There has been the introduction of inexpensive consumer digitalrecording devices,
and the ability to create a videowith mobile phones rather than needing a separate dedicated device.
This has led to growth in the creation of amateur moving images on platforms such as YouTubein a
variety of forms. As well as inspiring the creation of new areas of production, digital advances
have enabled further evolution in more traditional areas. Early cinematic pioneers dabbled with
in camera trickery in order to create fantastical scenes and amaze viewers, and this principle
carries forward to today. Matt Reeve s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) is a good example
of the intriguing applications of digital technology in order to achieve these old goals in a
potentially better way. As with the introduction of any new way to achieve a goal, the opportunities
available to content creators have multiplied with the growth in the variety of digital techniques.
The power particular innovations in technology can have in their contribution is perhaps underlined
by the impact they have had in less revered

Going to school marks a new horizon of a child s life at a time when he/she thinks they are ready

opportunities to the child to talk about this.
Praise means a lot to a child of this age as it would to a lot of other people. Efforts should be made
to recognise each child s special attributes.
Summary of Major Developments:
For 5 to 11 year olds: 1. Decreasing dependence on family and developing relationships with other
adults and children. 2. Becoming an active, contributing member of the family. 3. Learning how to
deal with strong feelings appropriately. 4. Learning how to reason and solve problems logically. 5.
Developing understandings of concepts such as number, time and money. 6. Adjusting to changing
body image and coming to terms with sex role identity.
Adolescence Mental and Emotional Development:
Adolescence has been charactised as a time of storm and stress, but many adolescents make the
transition from child to adult with relative ease and with little trauma either to themselves or to
their parents. It is not surprising that, while their bodies are so rapidly changing, youngsters
become quite preoccupied with them and wonder what they will become.
Girls see their first period as a positive achievement towards adulthood or a dreadful event which
signifies the end of childhood.
Boys fear to speak as their voice breaks or they are delighted as their facial hair becomes obviously

Ethanol fuel is clear and colorless, and most importantly, it originates from plants (Ethanol Fact
Book). Since it originates from plants almost anyone can help produce it.
Ethanol fuel is typically just made from plant biomass by pretreatment, fermentation, and
distillation, which is very much the same way that beer and liquors are produced.
The sugar beets and sugar cane are very good examples of these feed stocks that contain the sugar.
Corn contains starch that can easily be converted into the sugar that is needed. Even most of the
trees and grasses have cellulose that can be easily turned into sugar and then used in the making of
ethanol (Mukherjee 1 para 2).The ethanol process always starts by grinding up the feedstock which
makes it more quickly and easily processed.
Ethanol fuel has many positive features as an alternative to the use of liquid fuel. First, ethanol is
renewable. A relatively safe fuel would show very few engine changes. Second, its energy density
is much higher than with some of the other alternative fuels, such as methanol, which means there
would be less volume required to go the same distance. With the third benefit of ethanol, it would
be able to improve much of the agricultural economies by providing farmers with stable market
crops, such as maize and sugar beets, and with

The Delivery Models Of The Emergency Department At Mclaren...
Care Delivery Models in Work Place
As an emergency nurse, I work in a very fast paced environment with many different groups of
health care workers dealing with patients from all age groups and with different health complaints.
As we all were witnessed at some points in our career, health care system goes under changes
constantly which can be challenging sometimes. Example of that can be the change related to
technology system. Technology has brought about changes in the delivery of healthcare, especially
in the speed with which information is communicated and stored and in the amount and kind of
information that is available for decision making in nursing and administration. (King, 2006, p.
100). In order to be successful during changes, strong management, good communication, and great
team work is important. Description of Care Delivery Model
The emergency department at Mclaren Greater Lansing Hospital is a level three trauma unit with
forty beds which is divided to three different zones. Zone one is for possible level one trauma or
patients with very high level of acuity, zone two for patients who need the help of more than two

throat.

Persuasive Essay On Gay Rights
Everyday people have to walk around being criticized because of the type of person they are and
they are talked down to, violated, abused and sometimes even killed. No one should ever have to
walk around fearful to show affection to the person they are with because they are of the same
gender. A person shouldn t have to be frightened to use the bathroom because they are transgenderit
was their option and change in life they shouldn t have to carry that burden on them. Lesbians,
gays, bisexuals, transgenders, and queers are people and they are human beings just like the rest of

Transgenders have suffered an immense amount due to new House bill 2 which states that
every transgender must use the bathroom based off of their gender on their birth certificate as
said in the article Map helps trans people find safe bathrooms in North Carolina written by
Gabriella Sorto from CNN. This new bill was gratified on March 24th and has put a tremendous
amount of pressure on Transgenders since now they feel uncomfortable and unsafe using the
bathroom due to their gender identity. In the article Sorto speaks of Emily Waggoner, who is a
transgender herself that has created a map on Google for those of the trans community to find a
safe and content place to use the restroom. Although this map is helping many in the community it
is exceedingly despairing that one must use a map to find a safe area to use the bathroom, which
only takes minutes but they must struggle because of the New House Bill. Additionally, many can
agree that the bathroom law is ridiculous and it simply isn t fixing anything, it only ridicules and
derides trans people and someone who can agree with this is Samantha Bee. In the article
Samantha Bee Blasts North Carolina s Transphobic Bathroom Law it talks about the opinion of
Samantha Bee and her thoughts on the bathroom law and I would hope many people agree with
her opinion. She states Thanks to you, North Carolina citizens can now expect lots of privacy

Ethics In Call Of Duty
War is unforgiveable. Even to the novices and the arm chair commanders whose combat
experience does not extend past Call of Duty , it is clear that choosing one path over another can
mean the difference between life and death for oneself and one s unit. Sometimes there is no right
decision, and yet in others our own prejudices, fears, and emotions get in the way of the right
decision. While the former is often the well known reality of life that is seldom overcome, the
latter leads people to make the wrong decision when the right one is clear. The same can be said of
the unit from the Academy Award winning 1986 film Platoon that fell victim to their own
prejudices, fears, and emotions, eventually committing a number of warcrimes before the film was
through.
Despite the fictional nature of the film, Chris Taylor, played by Charlie Sheen, and the rest of the
soldiers in his platoon are forced to face not only their own ill advised actions, but whether or not
to report the illegal killing of a Vietnamese civilian. After Sergeant Elias, one of the platoon s squad
leaders, reports the killing, he is killed in action under suspicious circumstances after coming face to
face with the perpetrator, Staff Sergeant Barnes, the platoon sergeant. After Elias dies, Taylor and

the harder right over the easier wrong and to have the moral courage to stand with one s values

that something was wrong, and his strength empowered others to stand behind him to choose the
harder right. When he was gone, just as with their commitment to selflessly serving their nation and

An Analysis Of The Proportionality Of War Essay
Nick Smith Mr. Britton War Peace H 18 October 2016 An Analysis of Proportionality In War
There is something rather odd in the way America has come to fight its wars since World War II.
It s unimaginable that we would now use anything even remotely approaching the full measure
of our military power (aside from the nuclear option) in the wars we fight. This seems only
reasonable given the relative weakness of our Third World enemies in Vietnam and the Middle
East. But the fact is that we were forced to take our soldiers out of Vietnam because we had lost,
and today, despite our vast power, we are only slogging along in the Middle East against a hit
and run organization that we seem unable to stop. Yet no one, including, very likely, the
insurgents themselves, believes that America lacks the raw power to defeat this insurgency if it
wants to. So clearly America has adopted and has an accurate sense of proportionality. Now,
proportionality in war is defined as To judge first, the lawfulness in jus ad bellum of the strategic
goals in the use of force for self defense, and second, the lawfulness in jus in bello of any armed
attack that causes civilian casualties. (Fischer) America has very obviously become a very strong
military power since the start of the 20th century. We fought wars to win, back then, we justified the
means with the end result. Mustard gas, napalm, the nuclear bombs, all used to win the wars at any
cost. Since Vietnam however, the U.S. hasn t actively

The Epidemic Of Dengue Fever
The holiday season tends to attract Canadians to visiting warmer destinations in the hopes of
escaping our frigid winter weather. These warmer destinations, like the Caribbean, have much to
offer; with balmy tropical weather, hot beaches, ocean views, and plenty of sun. Unfortunately,
along with the luxuries of these areas comes with the risk of an array of tropical diseases, such as
dengue fever. The thought of contracting this illness is not ideal for the perfect winter getaway but
is beginning to become a somber reality with the dramatic increase of incidences in tropical
climates globally. Dengue fever, also historically known as break bone fever, is caused by the
dengue virusand is endemic in tropical areas around the world. If severe, the illness can progress
to more serious conditions, including dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome.
Dengue fever is emerging as a major global concern as an estimated 2.5 billion people are at risk
and an increasing trend in annual number of cases over recent reported years (1,2). The dengue
virus (DENV) is a small, positive, enveloped RNA virus about 40 50 nm in diameter. DENV
belongs to the genus flavivirus; a member of the Flaviviridae family (1). Its single stranded genome
codes for three structural proteins (capsid, precursor membrane, and envelope), and 7 non structural
proteins. There are four different serotypes of the virus, DENV 1 through DENV 4, that are all
antigenically and genetically different. Although

Industrialization and Immigration Essay
An outburst in growth of America s big city population, places of 100,000 people or more jumped
from about 6 million to 14 million between 1880 and 1900, cities had become a world of
newcomers (551). America evolved into a land of factories, corporate enterprise, and industrial
worker and, the surge in immigrationsupplied their workers. In the latter half of the 19th century,
continued industrialization and urbanization sparked an increasing demand for a larger and cheaper
labor force. The country s transformation from a rural agricultural society into an urban industrial
nation attracted immigrants worldwide. As free land and free labor disappeared and as capitalists

Likewise, the government began to play an active role as there was a burst of enthusiasm for
scientific investigation. Statistical studies by the federal government of immigration, child labor,
and economic practices; social research by privately funded foundations delving into industrial
conditions; vice commissions in many cities looking in prostitution, gambling, and other moral ills
of an urban society (598).
Not only did a big portion of the urban working class experience unsuitable working conditions, but
their pay and skill level was often not enough to promote them out of industrial employment.
Employees found themselves trapped with employers and earning low wages, with many hovering
in the poverty range. Reform was necessary to help the poor. Now, with the strife torn 1890s behind
them, reform became an absorbing concern of many Americans (597).
As the nation came to grips with what mechanization had done to the labor force, the
progressivists took an active approach to correct problems they encountered. They began a tax on
corporations (612). Roosevelt was troubled by the threat posed by big businesses to competitive
markets (615) and showed disdain for those who sought profit by betraying the public (613). They
aimed to strip power of the employers and sought to advance the undermined working

Rhetorical Analysis Avatar (Cultural Assimilation)
In James Cameron s critically acclaimed Avatar, there are many issues/disputes that are
represented, but there is only one that especially stands out; cultural assimilation. Cameron s
purpose for this is to better represent and portray the possibility of assimilation to today s modern
audience. He adopts a visually stimulating tone to better impact and leave his viewers with a
lasting impression of his portrayal, that will better convey the feelings of transgression in the
supremacist audience he is trying to reach. This is known by the type of subject he is tackling and
by showing a similar situation, unrelated to the textbook cover of Native assimilation, but leaves
the same impact. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the way it is visually astounding is only a bonus, it is perfectly executed and displayed. I feel
as if this is a masterpiece because of the way it tackles discrimination, not only from the white side
view but from the how the Native populace feels toward the invaders. It exposes the tender side of
two worlds colliding, such as trying to make peace and attempting to learn both sides of culture. The
contrast between the two worlds is shown by Jake Sully constantly moving between both worlds,
the audience is eventually more exposed to the Na vi side just as Jake Sully is. He says It feels like

Lester B. Pearson and the Suez Canal Crisis
The Suez crisis was a conflict that could have easily turned into a third World War. With a battle
between the Israelis and Egyptians at Sinai, the British and French invasion of Egypt, and nuclear
threats from the Soviet Union, all of the elements were present to escalate the conflict and pull
other countries into the fray. Canada had no direct ties to the Suez crisis, in terms of control or
economic interest. However, Canadian Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Lester B. Pearson,
persuaded the UN General Assembly to send in the United Nations Emergency Force. Even though
Lester B. Pearson dismayed the Commonwealth with his measures for peace, Canada was
recognized for starting the first ever United Nations Peacekeeping mission.... Show more content on

The Israeli advance towards the canal is a fake to show the world that Egypt in danger of being
overthrown by the Israelis. The British and French then dissimulate as peacekeepers, trying to
diffuse then tension between Egypt and Israel. They offer Nasser an ultimatum: Israel and Egypt are
to cease fighting or the two Western powers will intervene . On the 31st of October this ultimatum
expires and France and Britain attack, bombing Alexandria and sending in thousands of troops.
Russia then threatens Britain and France with Nuclear weapons. At this point it looks as though the
world is on the brink of another World War.
Canada had no interest to the Suez crisis, in terms of control, economic or military interest, but
Lester B. Pearson saw an opportunity to intervene. While the Cabinet in Ottawa debated about the
attack on Egypt, the UN Security Council met in New York. Even though Canada did not have a
permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, Lester B. Pearson and the Foreign
Affairs delegation of Canada worked towards building an agreement for the proposal to the UN,
on the Suez Crisis. Encouraged by the US, Yugoslavia makes a Uniting for Peace resolution ,
which enables a debate to be moved to the General Assembly. The UK and France do not block
this, however, negative votes would not constitute a veto. The Suez Canal

Cover Letter Benefits
A cover letter is necessary and very helpful for employers when filtering through multiple resumes.
To an employer a cover letter is a bit of a preview as to what the resume has to offer, while to a
prospective employee, a cover letter is a foot in the door. According to the Office of Career
Services at Harvard University, A good way to create a response producing cover letteris to
highlight your skills or experiences that are most applicable to the job or industry and to tailor
the letter to the specific organization you are applying to (16). It is one s first impression in
black and white and states a clear desire and capability for the desired position. Think of the
cover letter as one s voice for their personality and drive that sets them apart from others, where as
the resume is the facts and details of one s experience and capabilities.
What most if not all sources for tips on writing an effective cover letter for a position within the
health care state, is the importance of focusing on the needs of the employer and highlighting your
capabilities, which match this need. This tip has been shared by scholars at Harvard University as

Alternative Energy Sources Essay
Imagine a world where nobody can use their iPhone, their computer, or even turn on the lights.
That is the kind of world the future may be like if there is not an overhaul of how electricity is
obtained. Ever since the Industrial Revolution, people have utilized fossil fuels to power their
homes, cars, and businesses. Unfortunately, our stores of fossil fuels are running low, and they
have been demonstrated to increase the temperature in the atmosphere and accelerate global
warming. As gas prices steadily rise, people need a newer, cleaner source of energy. The
alternatives are numerous and would be beneficial to the well being of the whole world. The

All of the proven sources of oil will be depleted by the year 2055 according to Erika Antoniazzo,
a woman who is well read in terms of oil production.(eco info.net) On the other hand, renewable
resources can never be depleted. There will always be wind that can blow turbines. There will
always be a sun to heat solar panels. There will always be water to run through dams. The power
that can be drawn from these sources is limitless, which is obviously more sustainable than fossil
fuels, which clearly has a limit. Scientists are developing technology in the field of nuclear
fusion (the process in which the sun creates its energy), which if obtained will provide an
infinite amount of power. These alternative sources of energy will provide energy for the world
until the end of time. The government has been greatly influenced by big oil companies lobbying
for political power. No single group should have such a large amount of power over the
government. If our focus on fossil fuels is shifted over to a more general scope that includes
various renewable energy sources, then no single group of companies will have a significant
amount of power in the direction of the country. Since oil companies have an iron grip on
decisions the U.S. makes, we have gone to several wars over the pursuit of oil. General Zilmer
stated that the amount of casualties can be reduced greatly if troops could move away from their
use of fossil fuels.(News Observer) These wars would

Although it is not necessary to apply with the government to obtain the rights to a trademark, it is advantageous to register it. The advantages of registering your trademark are having exclusive national rights to use it for your goods, the ability to not allow importation into the U.S. of goods that bear this mark, and also the right to sue in federal court. The second intellectual property right that Jimmy can utilize is a patent. A utility patent provides protection for his invention. • 6. Art In Art, Art And The Art Of Art Drawing is not an activity, but a piece of me that I could never let go of. Drawing has transformed itself from a fun hobby into an essential form of expression. It has transformed the way I look at things; nothing is mundane in art. A tree, for example, is a beautiful thing. Every single tree is unique, with its own bark texture, its own arrangement of branches, and its own color. The limit only gets pushed further when the tree inherits the personality of its artistic creator. Whenever I feel emotionally connected to something, I generally have an impulse to draw it, which strengthens the connection. Both the result and the process are rewarding; it is always possible to improve, challenge, and discuss with other artists. There aren t always right ways to draw things, which allows illustration to evolve throughout time. One room: a dancing lion, a painting cat, and a programming dragon. • 8. Analysis Of Lolita s Tehran, And Fidelity When entering this unit of postmodernism, my only thoughts were of a reluctant nature. I pessimistically expected only disagreement and frustration from reading the works of Life of Pi, Reading Lolita in Tehran, and Fidelity. However, my initial expectations were completely and thankfully wrecked. Though the philosophies of both Martel and Nafisi contradict my own, there are endless gems of insight to be plundered from their writings. These postmodern works emphasize where we as humans find our identity and how religionplays into that identity. Contrary to my presumptions, I learned so much from reading these novels woven with postmodernists thought and can say with confidence that I am a better and more educated person for having read them. Postmodernism is not a wholly cohesive ideology that can be covered in a single blanket statement. It is more of an umbrella that contains many miscellaneous modern conceptions of things. (Uhhhh citation, idrk) There is an over arching theme, however, that rejects objective truth. This belief would argue that truth can be constructed by each person individually. For Pi, this meant his house could be a temple for gods from Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam (Martel 45 46). It did not matter that those religions were not congruous, he just wanted to love God (Martel 69). His truth was that all religions are true (Martel 69). On the other hand, about 8% of American adults say that technology has had mostly negative effects on them (Paul). Fire gave man crucial tools to aid survival, improving quality of life as well as lengthening the average lifespan (McKenna). Aside from the intermediate and tangible improvements fire brought to the lives of the early man, it also was key in cultural development; it gave early groups another skill by which distinguish members, and also helped facilitate the creation and spread of spoken language (McKenna). Considering all that fire contributed to the lives of the earliest humans, it may very well be the most important innovation in the history of man. Controlled fire may very well be the most important innovation in history, but there are many more inventions that benefited humans and society. Paul Ranter, a writer and filmmaker expresses how paper, which was invented around 100 B.C. in China, has been indispensable in allowing people to write down and share ideas then and now. Adding on to this topic, the wheel is one of the world s greatest inventions. It was very helpful for moving heavy objects and helped the Mesopotamian advance in transportation. Without this invention, we would not be nearly as advanced as we are today in the automobile or transportation industries. The Sumerians were the first to make this wheel. It benefited them because for a short period of time they were the only society with a wheel. They took advantage of this and used it against other civilizations that didn t have access to the wheel to conquer new lands and territories ( The Wheel ). • 10. Persuasive Speech On Life In Our Life Inhale. Exhale. Breathe. It appears that you have taken one step closer to death. Death is all around us; the air we breathe every day, hour, minute, second is crucial to our survival. However, air can be seen as a double edge sword. Air, is what is keeping us alive, for if we stopped breathing, we would die of suffocation. On the other hand, the longer we breathe, the closerwe are towards death. In this sense, a burning what if question has been on my mind: what if the air we are breathing is a poison that is slowly killing us? Think about that. If this were to be true? What have you done...or plan to do that makes breathing this poisonous air worthy? Many people today waste much of their life doing useless things. They do not realize that each breath they spend on the couch or dreaming of things they could do, they are wasting their opportunity to really do something. Let me break this down for you. Life expectancy for a typically American is about 79 years or 948 months. Of those 79 years, 1/3 of the time is spent sleeping, leaving us with about 632 months. After taking into consideration factors such as eating, using the restroom, and browsing the internet, we are left with roughly 19 years to live. 19 years may seem like a lot, but that is only about 24% of your life that is actually in your hands. After finding out these surprising stats, I began to rethink my life. I looked a little closer around the community I grew up in and realized that there was a huge need within my community. I first began to get involved within my community eighth grade year through the Community Thanksgiving Meal. At first, I did not realize that all the people coming in for a meal or the places that needed a delivery was all just right within my community. As the years went by, I slowly became more and more involved. I started from only coming in on Thanksgiving Day to help to being there every step of the way. I remember volunteering to coordinate a clothing drive last year to give clothes to those in need during the Thanksgiving Meal. At the end of that Thanksgiving Day, a lady comes up to me and asks if she could grab a few extra items. The lady had on a thin coat and I immediately knew that she needed help. I ran and ... Finding oneself in a place where material properties and social status are crucial, many people s happinessin such cases would be dependent on these things. Question 1: The Research methods First, there is the observational method. The researchers used the observational method to identifying how certain characters tend to be influenced by environmental changes. For instance, the researchers review the study conducted by Morelli and Lieberman, where the volunteers were instructed to look at pictures at their free time and memorize the eight digits assigned to them by the researchers. Some individuals showed reduced empathy, while others were able to feel things deeply (Kluger, 2013). When providing culturally competent health care for the Haitian client, the nurse must recognize the nontraditional health beliefs of the client and the health practices that arise as a result. In addition, the nurse must also maintain a nonjudgmental attitude about these beliefs. The nurse should incorporate Haitian folk practices into the treatment plans as long as they are not harmful and desired by the client. • 20. Essay On English Reflection Semester One English Reflection August 17, 2017; also known as my first day of officially naming myself a high school student at Lindbergh High School. I walked into my fourth hour, English 1 Honors, not knowing what I would encounter within the next four months of my academic career. English (until now) remained my best and most favorite subject ever since I could remember, however, this year I began to feel the challenge I have always needed, especially with the new grading system. Standard based grading consists of grading each individual category us students consistently remain expected to learn, and master this year. Categories like speaking and listening, reading, writing, and habits of learning . Throughout semester one, I showed an increase of my weaknesses within the categories of speaking and listening and habits of learning while I showed an increase of my strengths in the categories reading and writing. To begin, the first semester of my high school experience as a whole seemed very stressful. By this I mean, completing my work along with adapting to listening to the new teaching styles and getting over my biggest fear speaking in front of the class. Although, anything takes time to get used to, English illustrates a perfect example. As I stated before, the standard based grading system needed some time to get used to, along with the expectations and requirements of honors versus regular. As time went on, my grades show that I never really got used to this. During term one, my habits of learning average ended with an average of 91%. At this time, I realized the level of difficulty English would endure, so I put more effort into it... at the time. During term two, my habits of learning average went down to a 76%. The biggest reason, while in English there consisted a large amount of classwork, it meant an increased amount of classwork for other classes as well. After reviewing this, I feel very disappointed with how my efforts towards academic responsibility weakened, making one of my goals to put forth more effort during semester two. As I said before, high school alone pulled out a magnificent amount of stress, not helped by one of my weakest categories ever since I started school consisted of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Throughout the years, entertainment on television has become much more popular. It has become an important part of our entertainment today. The average amount of hours per day that television is on in an average U.S. home is six hours and forty seven minutes (Herr). In those six hours, there are a variety of shows that can be seen, just for entertainment purposes. I just don t know what s going to play on them ( 1920 s 1960 s Television ). Not only is there a large variety of shows that Americans can now watch, it is more convenient than driving to movies, concerts, sporting events, and plays and it is cheaper as well. With modern day television people do not have to get dressed up and drive to see what they could be watching on their own TV sets at home. This is why television companies have adapted to meet the needs of the American people by supplying access to all of these events. The median household income for those 65 and older in 2007 was only $27, 798 (Hooyman Kiyak, 2011). I chose financial security as the most pressing issue facing the older population because it influences several other areas. Sources of income for the agingpopulation are sometimes insufficient to maintain proper housing, may cause health problems, and restricts access to nursing homes and assisted living facilities. The difficulty that the lack of financial security can pose for an aging individual leads... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A variety of long term care options are available to those who require more assistance. Assisted living facilities, village concepts, and Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs) are all available options for seniors. Living in these residencies may address several other issues such as isolation, transportation, and mobility. These types of facilities focus on providing assistance with daily living activities for the elderly while still allowing them to be independent. Residents also have ample opportunities to socialize in common spaces such as dining rooms and living rooms. However, these facilities are often expensive and must be paid for privately. As a result, the option for living in these helping facilities may be out of reach for the elderly with a fixed income (Hash, Jurkowski, Krout, 2015). Without these residential facilities as an option, aging adults with lower incomes who must remain in their homes may face challenges related to their health, mobility, and ... Constructed in 1949, on a newly acquired 25 acre plot in Southie s Lower End , West Broadway Housing Development was to serve as temporary housing for veterans of the World Wars. By the early 1970s, however, the development would be 972 apartments for low income families, and would be known as the worst type of lower class welfare housing. As Michael Patrick McDonald contends, South Bostonians think of Southie as the best place in the world , and there is a silence that consumes the residents when it comes to discussing the woes of the past. And in such a physically and culturally secluded area of the City of Boston, it is unlikely that anything the citizens are not willing to discuss would be otherwise recorded. In speaking of lost history, it is important to question the history far beyond the past 60 years. It is widely known that Native Americans inhabited the Boston dating back 6,000 years. Nonetheless, many of their artifacts have been lost over the years. However, over the past two years, Native American artifacts have been discovered in the Andrew Square section of South Boston, not far from D Street. While it is likely that most artifacts are lost forever because of the disregard for the area during development in the 1950s, further exploration may be able to call attention to a distant history. • 24. Protests In Antigone By Sophocles Throughout Antigone, Sophocles develops the idea of emotion in protests through the actions of Antigone. Antigone, angry at Creon s refusal to bury her dead brother, decides to protest and go against the rule of the state. Creon responds in return, rashly sentencing Antigone to death. At the end, the play ends in tragedy, with Creons son Haemon, Creon s wife, and Antigoneall dead from their emotionally driven choices. Throughout his play, Sophoclesdevelops the idea of pathos in protests, showing that emotions are the driving force in starting many protests, the use of pathos is essential if the protest wishes to grow and gather a following, and that relying on simply pathos and emotions will lead to the failure of the protest without... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Throughout the play, Sophocles presents the great power pathos has on swaying the minds of people, and the great importance it has in allowing a protest to flourish. When looking at the chorus, it is clear the necessity pathos has in convincing others to join your side. When Antigone is sentenced to death, the chorus says, In all her lovely strength she traded the light of day for the bolted brazen vault buried within her tomb, her bridal chamber, wed to the yoke and broken. But she was of glorious birth my child, my child (l.1036 1040). The positive light that the chorus shines onto Antigone, is a stark contrast to how they portrayed Antigone as a wretched child in the beginning. The reason for this sudden change is evident when the chorus mentions Antigone s current dire situation. By apealing to the people s emotions through her actions of being sentenced to death, Antigone suceeds in gaining support that she would not have had without the use of pathos. A modern example of the use of pathos being vital in drawing people in to a protest could be seen throught the Civil Rights Movement led by Maritn Luther King Jr. His use of pathos shines through in his Letter from Birmingham Jail , where he writes, As you seek to explain to your six year old daughter why she can t go to the public ... Henry Jenkins describes convergence as a situation where multiple media systems coexist and where media content flows fluidly across them (2006: 282). An important part of the information transferred across platforms are the techniques utilised in creation. Digital technologies have no doubt had a large impact on moving images and how they are developed and produced in the modern world. There has been the introduction of inexpensive consumer digitalrecording devices, and the ability to create a videowith mobile phones rather than needing a separate dedicated device. This has led to growth in the creation of amateur moving images on platforms such as YouTubein a variety of forms. As well as inspiring the creation of new areas of production, digital advances have enabled further evolution in more traditional areas. Early cinematic pioneers dabbled with in camera trickery in order to create fantastical scenes and amaze viewers, and this principle carries forward to today. Matt Reeve s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) is a good example of the intriguing applications of digital technology in order to achieve these old goals in a potentially better way. Since it originates from plants almost anyone can help produce it. Ethanol fuel is typically just made from plant biomass by pretreatment, fermentation, and distillation, which is very much the same way that beer and liquors are produced. The sugar beets and sugar cane are very good examples of these feed stocks that contain the sugar. Corn contains starch that can easily be converted into the sugar that is needed. Even most of the trees and grasses have cellulose that can be easily turned into sugar and then used in the making of ethanol (Mukherjee 1 para 2).The ethanol process always starts by grinding up the feedstock which makes it more quickly and easily processed. Ethanol fuel has many positive features as an alternative to the use of liquid fuel. First, ethanol is renewable. A relatively safe fuel would show very few engine changes. Second, its energy density is much higher than with some of the other alternative fuels, such as methanol, which means there would be less volume required to go the same distance. Care Delivery Models in Work Place As an emergency nurse, I work in a very fast paced environment with many different groups of health care workers dealing with patients from all age groups and with different health complaints. As we all were witnessed at some points in our career, health care system goes under changes constantly which can be challenging sometimes. Example of that can be the change related to technology system. Technology has brought about changes in the delivery of healthcare, especially in the speed with which information is communicated and stored and in the amount and kind of information that is available for decision making in nursing and administration. (King, 2006, p. 100). In order to be successful during changes, strong management, good communication, and great team work is important. • 44. Ethics In Call Of Duty War is unforgiveable. Even to the novices and the arm chair commanders whose combat experience does not extend past Call of Duty , it is clear that choosing one path over another can mean the difference between life and death for oneself and one s unit. Sometimes there is no right decision, and yet in others our own prejudices, fears, and emotions get in the way of the right decision. While the former is often the well known reality of life that is seldom overcome, the latter leads people to make the wrong decision when the right one is clear. The same can be said of the unit from the Academy Award winning 1986 film Platoon that fell victim to their own prejudices, fears, and emotions, eventually committing a number of warcrimes before the film was through. Despite the fictional nature of the film, Chris Taylor, played by Charlie Sheen, and the rest of the soldiers in his platoon are forced to face not only their own ill advised actions, but whether or not to report the illegal killing of a Vietnamese civilian. After Sergeant Elias, one of the platoon s squad leaders, reports the killing, he is killed in action under suspicious circumstances after coming face to face with the perpetrator, Staff Sergeant Barnes, the platoon sergeant. • 45. An Analysis Of The Proportionality Of War Essay Nick Smith Mr. Britton War Peace H 18 October 2016 An Analysis of Proportionality In War There is something rather odd in the way America has come to fight its wars since World War II. It s unimaginable that we would now use anything even remotely approaching the full measure of our military power (aside from the nuclear option) in the wars we fight. This seems only reasonable given the relative weakness of our Third World enemies in Vietnam and the Middle East. But the fact is that we were forced to take our soldiers out of Vietnam because we had lost, and today, despite our vast power, we are only slogging along in the Middle East against a hit and run organization that we seem unable to stop. Yet no one, including, very likely, the insurgents themselves, believes that America lacks the raw power to defeat this insurgency if it wants to. So clearly America has adopted and has an accurate sense of proportionality. Now, proportionality in war is defined as To judge first, the lawfulness in jus ad bellum of the strategic goals in the use of force for self defense, and second, the lawfulness in jus in bello of any armed attack that causes civilian casualties. (Fischer) America has very obviously become a very strong military power since the start of the 20th century. We fought wars to win, back then, we justified the means with the end result. Mustard gas, napalm, the nuclear bombs, all used to win the wars at any cost. Since Vietnam however, the U.S. hasn t actively ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. The Epidemic Of Dengue Fever The holiday season tends to attract Canadians to visiting warmer destinations in the hopes of escaping our frigid winter weather. These warmer destinations, like the Caribbean, have much to offer; with balmy tropical weather, hot beaches, ocean views, and plenty of sun. Unfortunately, along with the luxuries of these areas comes with the risk of an array of tropical diseases, such as dengue fever. The thought of contracting this illness is not ideal for the perfect winter getaway but is beginning to become a somber reality with the dramatic increase of incidences in tropical climates globally. Dengue fever, also historically known as break bone fever, is caused by the dengue virusand is endemic in tropical areas around the world. If severe, the illness can progress to more serious conditions, including dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome. Dengue fever is emerging as a major global concern as an estimated 2.5 billion people are at risk and an increasing trend in annual number of cases over recent reported years (1,2). The dengue virus (DENV) is a small, positive, enveloped RNA virus about 40 50 nm in diameter. DENV belongs to the genus flavivirus; a member of the Flaviviridae family (1). Its single stranded genome codes for three structural proteins (capsid, precursor membrane, and envelope), and 7 non structural proteins. There are four different serotypes of the virus, DENV 1 through DENV 4, that are all antigenically and genetically different. Although ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Cameron s purpose for this is to better represent and portray the possibility of assimilation to today s modern audience. He adopts a visually stimulating tone to better impact and leave his viewers with a lasting impression of his portrayal, that will better convey the feelings of transgression in the supremacist audience he is trying to reach. That is the kind of world the future may be like if there is not an overhaul of how electricity is obtained. Unfortunately, our stores of fossil fuels are running low, and they have been demonstrated to increase the temperature in the atmosphere and accelerate global warming. There will always be wind that can blow turbines. There will always be a sun to heat solar panels. There will always be water to run through dams. The power that can be drawn from these sources is limitless, which is obviously more sustainable than fossil fuels, which clearly has a limit.
