MLA Basic In-Text Citation Rules
Basic In-Text Citation Rules MLA format follows the author-page method of in-text citation What’s  required ?   The  author’s name  (or title if no author is given). Page number(s)  in parentheses at the end of the sentence.    Parenthetical (in-text) Human beings have been described as "symbol-using animals" (Burke 3).
Parenthetical reference   –   citation information (page number and/or author’s name) provided in parentheses at the end of the sentence.  Signal phrase   –  when you put the author’s name first to introduce the information.   Works Cited:  Wordsworth, William.  Lyrical Ballads . London: Oxford  U.P., 1967. Print Parenthetical (in-text) Wordsworth stated that Romantic poetry was marked by a "spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings" (263). Parenthetical (in-text) Romantic poetry is characterized by the "spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings" (Wordsworth 263 )
Paraphrasing Parenthetical (in-text) Wordsworth extensively explored the role of  emotion in the creative process (263).
Long Quotations If a quotation is more than four lines when typed into your paper, begin the quotation double-spaced on a new line that is indented by 2.5cm (1 inch). The quotation should be double-spaced.  Do not use quotation marks.  Also note that the period is placed  before  the parenthetical citation  For example: Parenthetical (in-text) I ran, twisting, and turning through the trees  like a Cooper's hawk, and occasionally  riding a free fifty feet downhill on an aspen  sapling.
