In 1961, Soviet nuclear missiles were stationed in Cuba, greatly increasing their range and threatening cities like Seattle. High-altitude U.S. reconnaissance planes discovered missile bases that seemed ready to receive Soviet nuclear missiles, escalating tensions between Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev and U.S. President John F. Kennedy during the Cold War standoff known as the Cuban Missile Crisis.
