Classroom Projects Fluency and Comprehension       Your children will be participating in a unit that will enhance their reading abilities.  They will be choral reading and also working in groups in order to improve their comprehension and fluency.  The students will be able to ask each other questions about the reading in order to improve comprehension.    For fluency, not only will they choral read with me, but they will do the same with each other.  They will be aiming towards reading with expression and the proper pausing. Content Question Would you be reading with expression if you did not read like you talk? Essential Question What does it mean to read with expression?  What does it mean to comprehend what you're reading?   Unit Question What are things that can help you comprehend what you read?
Standards and Objectives 4.) Read with comprehension a variety of first-grade narrative and informational texts, including recalling information and retelling a story with beginning, middle, and end. Objective: Students will listen a passage and answer questions about that passage to demonstrate their comprehension. 5.) Read with fluency simple passages containing simple sentences. Objective: Students will mimic the teacher's (or software's) expression and fluidness after a sentence has been read aloud by reading it aloud as a group to show fluency.
Roles Roles of the Parent The role of the parent for this project is to work with your student on a nightly basis to practice their oral reading and comprehension.  These are things that only come with time, which is why there is so much practice involved in this unit. Role of the Teacher It is my job as the teacher to ensure that your child has a clear understanding of the project and what will be asked of them.  I want to make sure that everyone gets lots of practice and one on one time with me. Role of the Student The student must be dedicated to practicing their reading skills and to working with their classmates toward big reading improvements.
Project Based Learning This type of learning is extremely important.  It means that the students learn through hands on activities and by working with each other.  Learning in such a manner creates lasting memories and makes learning fun!
Reminders Dear parents,       Please do not forget that the money for our upcoming field trip is due at the end of next week.  Without this money your child will not be able to participate at CHOM.         Also, do not forget that I love for you guys to come visit your children at lunch time!  It makes their day to get a lunch time visitor, so come eat lunch at our school as often as you'd like!
