Shakespeare s Hamlet
American playwright Maxwell Anderson once stated in his essay, Off Broadway,
that, the story of a play must be a conflict, and specifically, a conflict between the
forces of good and evil within a single person. The most memorable characters in
literature have dealt with struggles both internal and external, in terms of either
heroic or cowardly means. In William Shakespeare s play Hamlet, the title character
uses either procrastination or impulse to deal with conflicts resulting in devastating
consequences. The protagonist s urge to act upon impulse and the resulting deadly
outcomes speaks to Hamlet s lack of forethought and even his fleeting madness. In
contrast, Hamlet s continued procrastination draws on many of his conflicts
eventually resulting in an overabundance of spilled blood. To begin, Hamlet s
decision to avenge his late father is made up on impulse and irrational thinking.
Although for the majority of the play Hamlet is contemplative almost to the point of
obsession, there are numerous moments when he acts with incredible swiftness and

In 79 AD, one of the most famous volcano eruptions occurred the eruption of Mt.
Vesuvius. This volcano dominated the skyline of the Roman city Pompeii. After its
eruption, this ancient city, once bustling with trade, became buried under a thick
layer of volcanic ash. The once popular city came to a halt it was never rebuilt and

The town in its height had amazing temples, a forum, and theater for the enjoyment
of the wealthy visitors. The eruption of the volcano, Vesuvius, began around noon of
August 24, 17 AD when the mountain exploded, sending a 10 mile high cloud of
ash, smoke, and rock into the sky. The debris rained down onto the city for the next
day, causing its inhabitants to seek safety along the shore line, away from the
mountain. Many, however, remained in their homes and became trapped there by
both debris and dust clouds. The next morning, those who remained in Pompeii were
killed by the poisonous gasses released by the mountain. Herculaneum, a small town
to the northwest of Pompeii, on the other side of Mount Vesuvius, underwent the
same fate as Pompeii, but in a different manner. At the beginning of the eruption,
the town was not greatly affected. An immediate gust of hot ash and poisonous gas
engulfed the city, killing all its inhabitants. After the initial deaths, volcanic debris,
mud, and rock flowed over the city, effectively burying it. Because of the flash like
killing of the Herculeans, their lives were well preserved for archaeologists to later

is a short storyabout a man who is visiting his childhood lakehouse with his son and

informative short story featuring a man who seems to feel as though he is losing

the story, the author uses great detail to put the main character s feelings on display
by using experiences and emotions that are relatable to the reader. The childlike

Jean Toomer through his poem called November Cotton Flower . The poem is
fourteen lines of rhyming verse describing the harsh, sudden and questionable
bloom of a cotton flower in the month of November. It is composed of heroic
couplets, with a regular rhyme scheme, which is as follows: A, A, B, B, C, C, D,
D, E, E, F, G, H, H, but the poem reads like Shakespearian sonnet three quatrains
developing a certain tone and theme, followed by a couplet that undercuts or
reverses them. In the beginning it portrays the scuffle for survival of cotton flower

Abstract
The United States of America has an elite group of men and women who protect their
President, and handle monetary crimes such as counterfeiting, and financial crimes,
they are called the United States Secret Service. These top agents work hard daily to
crack down on fraudulent crimes, and keep the Commander in Chief alive. This
report will highlight their work from 1850 1901. 3 presidents were killed in this
time period, and much of the USA s currency was fake and useless. All that

With over one third of the nation s money being fake, it became a real issue. When
there is fake money in the economy, it drains the value of the US dollar. It drains
the value because, the more bills that are out there, the less value there is to the
ones in people s wallets, which tears apart the nation s economy. ( U.S Secret
Service in History, n.d.) Even today the US still takes counterfeiting very serious, a
single charge of carry fraudulent money can add up to 250,000 dollars in fines, and
possibly 20 years in prison (Followill, n.d). Fake money still affects us today, and
should be taken very seriously. Death of Lincoln
On April 14, 1865, Abraham Lincolnshould have approved the secret service as
personal protection. His decision to not approve the Secret Service for personal
protection of himself could have saved his life. Lincoln went to the play wife his
wife, Mary. Meanwhile, there was a deadly lapse in protection of Lincoln. John
Parker was a local police officer assigned to honest Abe that night, but could not
contain his drinking problem. Parker went to have a drink. After that, John Wilkes
Booth snuck, aimed his Derringer pistol, and shot Lincoln in the back of the head.
Lincoln was rushed across the street where he died hours later. This is sad by how
easily this could have been prevented this murder. Unfortunately, the US Government
did not learn their lesson quite yet.

To understand modern Alexandria, we have to go back a little to its history.
The history of Alexandria is an admirable story that exposes to the reader the
significant role the city played as Egypt s most important harbor and of its unfolding

As a life long friend of Alexander and his successor, Ptolemy s aim was to create a
cultural center of learning and he enlisted Demetrius, a former student of Aristotle,
to accomplish this task. Once a learning institution was formed, a supporting
library was need. Demetrius collected all the writings necessary in various
languages which were later translated into Greek. Scholars came from all over the
world to immerse themselves into an atmosphere of learning. They researched
astronomy, medicine, engineering and several other disciplines creating a cultural

Semiotics influences signs by modifying the way we see them when certain aspects
are changed or enhanced to convey or evoke certain meanings or feelings, when
words are italicized or bolded our eyes immediately focus more on them than the
other words, when messages are presented to us in strange or noticeable fonts we are
