RAMCO INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
Department of Computer Science and Engineering
Academic Year: 2019-2020(Odd Semester)
INNOVATIVE TEACHING PRACTICES
Degree, Semester& Branch: III SemesterB.E. ECE “B Section”
Course Code & Title: EC8393 Fundamentals of Data Structures in C
Name of the Faculty member: Mr. C.A.Yogaraja
Date: 15.07.2019
Topic: Strings
Lecture No.: 11
Practice’s followed: A Minute Paper
Type of Learning: Active Learning
Learning Objectives:
Objective Statements
O1 To handle string manipulation in c programming
A Minute Paper
Ending a class with short writing assignments about the delivered lecture is a
powerful way to assess the degree to which students understand. The students were asked to
write about,
“What was the most important thing you learned during this class?”
“What questions remained unanswered?”
“Summarize the main point of today’s lecture in one sentence.”
This will give some insights as how we need to modify the content for next class.
Uses of Minute Paper:
Helps identify student misconceptions early instead of at the end of semester.
• Provides an opportunity for you to deliver additional resources or support in a
timely way.
• Lets students know that you are invested in their learning needs.
Justification for chosen the topic:
String Concept in a programming language is essential in handling advanced concept
like file handling in future. To make students more clear and have in depth sound in the string
this activity helps in revealing students understanding about the topic.
Activity:
At the end of the regular session on string operations, students were asked to write
individually about the topic discussed, how much you have clear idea about it? What are the
areas that are un-cleared? Any further session needed for the topic? Is anything you think
silly to ask? If so, mention it.
Few students are still in the complexity circle for raising their unanswered questions
about the session directly towards instructor. This activity reveals the students understanding,
mentality, involvement and knowledge about the particular topic.
Observation:

About String 33/35=94.28%
String functions 35/35=100%
Built-in 30/35=85.71%
User Defined 23/35=65.71%
Outcomes:
When students realize that the instructor is responding to their concerns, confusions,
and questions rose, they will be motivated to participate enthusiastically in the following
subsequent classes. It also gives the insight about how much explanation is needed to make
students understand.
Reflective Report:
Pre implementation:
Challenges:
 Hesitation in Sharing their critique on class
Addressing Challenges:
 Mentored students to know the impact and importance of sharing their views and
posting queries related to the topic at end of class.
 Assured the minute paper is not a kind of evaluation methodology to assess
Post implementation:
 Students enthusiastically involved in the activity and wrote the minute paper about
the Strings
 With the help of analysis made more examples were given on the string function
implementation techniques.
