The MILab at Texas State University launched in 2016 to support teaching and research in emerging digital media. It provides resources like a student lab and maker space. MILab is organized by areas like VR/AR, social media analytics, multimedia, UX design, and coding. It hosts events like a digital media speaker series and has received grants for projects from the Knight Foundation and ProPublica. Enrollment in the Digital Media program has grown to over 200 students representing diverse backgrounds. Graduates have found internships and jobs in social media agencies and many pursue further education.
Helen Blanchett ARLG Digital Literacy Event - Key issues in developing digita...Helen Blanchett
Keeping up-to-date with current developments in digital literacy can be challenging. This interactive session aims to highlight new and interesting initiatives, identify the key issues you need to know about and provide plenty of opportunity for discussion and sharing with fellow attendees.
The slides in this presentation formed the 'blocks' for the Blockbusters game, where attendees had to create a digital literacy programme for their institution.
Solutions to reducing gaps in digital literacy, broadband access and technology use started at the grassroots level. Having been through two federal programs in the United States, we now have top down attention and approaches being created. We learned from BTOP (Broadband Technology Opportunities Program) the necessity of working through trusted organizations and individuals to increase information technology skills and home broadband adoption. Local approach is essential.
Institutionalizing digital inclusion brings necessary attention and funding. Seattle and Minneapolis have staff dedicated to leading and coordinating digital inclusion efforts. Austin and Chicago are investing local resources in digital inclusion. The Google Fiber being deployed in Kansas City has resulted in funding and community collaborations focused upon making sure all residents benefit from the high-speed network in Kansas City. One of Broadband Rhode Island’s strategies has been to integrate digital inclusion into existing programs and initiatives. They have successfully had broadband data included in an open data warehouse, digital literacy included in the state’s adult education program, and broadband infrastructure and adoption data included in a statewide planning process.
Building a Research Commons in a University Library: Connecting Scholars wi...Monday11
Emory’s Robert W. Woodruff Library opened the Research Commons in the fall of 2011. The 5,000 square foot space is dedicated to graduate students and faculty who are engaged in collaborative scholarly work which takes advantage of digital technology. This presentation will focus on the mission, the space, and the way the Research Commons takes advantage of its place in the library.
From its location inside the library, the Research Commons is neutral space where interdisciplinary groups of scholars can work collaboratively. Almost all of the furniture is mobile, enabling users to configure the work areas to suit their needs. This open design also allows scholars to see what others are working on and to be inspired by what they see. These unplanned and serendipitous encounters, along with more formal events, allow the Research Commons to establish and nurture an interdisciplinary community of scholars interested in digital scholarship. Housed within the Research Commons is the Mellon Funded Digital Scholarship Commons (DiSC). The mission of DiSC is to work with scholars whether they require instruction on simple tools or need help planning and executing larger projects.

Out of mind, out of site: Engaging with your Alumni online (Eduweb 2013)Penny Richards Fowler
Your alumni graduated years ago and no longer visit your University's website. So how do you keep them engaged, and how have new technologies such as social media and mobile devices changed your alumni communications? This session will demonstrate how data analysis has driven changes to online communications within the Victoria University Alumni Relations program, based in Melbourne, Australia. It will explore in detail an Alumni Relations campaign utilising online resources, managing online engagement with other departments in a University, finding lost and successful Alumni, and issues communicating with international Alumni. Presented at Eduweb, Boston, July 2013.
Digital literacy is more than just knowing how to turn on a computer and use social media. It is the ability to critically analyze digital information and create information using digital tools. This presentation offers some resources and links to tutorials, reports and websites that help individuals bridge the digital divide.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.
