Summary Of Cato A Tragedy By Joseph Addison
Joseph Addison was an esteemed writer, and founder of The Spectator magazine. Throughout his
work Addison emphasized his reader to build strong responsible values. The essence of this
responsibility is to be diligent, and continuous improve one s virtues to improve the state of order.
Responsibility is encouraged through the works of Joseph Addisons in Spare Time , Cato, a Tragedy

These seed can be seen in his reflection on Seneca work as We are always complaining our days
are few and acting as though there would be no end of them (Addison). Which prevents induvial

along with other historical stories, Addison is able to wrench in his thesis that people must expert

Formal And Formal Events
Programs are little square sheets of paper that are used to list the time of events at mostly formal
and sometimes informal events. They sometimes can be boring have no color and just printed out
in black and white. And at other times they can be filled with color and bring life to the readers.
Many times at graduations or dance shows any outgoing event they could be printed out in maybe
the theme color of the event or just a designated color with italicized words. Another type of
programisn t used to show time of events they can be used to tell an order in which things should
go and maintain order when doing something. My genre in this essay are programs.

the events in a organized fashion On the top right it has Pro Training Programs. To let people
know where to go and look up the next week s workout. On the left side of the program, its says
Rugby Union stage 1 4 week program (speed session 1). It lets you know where the particular
workout came from and which particular sports athlete these workouts are targeting. This workout
doesn t give a time in which events are done but it gives the workouts in sets and in the order they
should be done and lastly how many reps you should do. This program is very detailed it gives
the warm ups, the speed technical warm ups and lastly the speed development works. And the
workouts come in columns to let you know your intensity and even focus and how long you should
rest.these type of programs are used for informal events and really focus on attracting young teens
and older men rugby players.
Lastly, this program is used to give the time of an event and tells the readers at what time and
where the specific event takes place. At the top, it has the date printed in a bolder and larger text
than the normal words on the paper. This third program is sponsored by the Guff Heritage day and

The Domestication of the Last Frontier Essay
The Domestication of the Last Frontier
In 1865 the frontier line generally followed the western limits of the states bordering the
Mississippi River, bulging outward to include the eastern sections of Kansas and Nebraska.
Beyond this thin edge of pioneer farms, lay the prairie and sagebrush lands that stretched to the
foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Then, for nearly 1,600 kilometers, loomed the huge bulk of
mountain ranges, many rich in silver, gold and other metals. On the far side, plains and deserts
were part of this region; here laid the Last Frontier the Great Plains . For a long time, the region had
been called the Great American Dessert, a barrier to cross on the way to the Pacific, unfit for
human habitation and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By 1890 the frontier had disappeared.
Settlement was spurred by the Homestead Act of 1862, which granted free farms of 64 hectares
to citizens who would occupy and improve the land. Under the homestead Act of 1862 a farmer
could either realize the old dream of free land and simply by staking out a claim and living on it
for years, or by buying the land at $1.25 an acre after six months. (Tindall 878) Unfortunately for
the would be farmers, the land itself was suited more for cattle ranching than farming, and by 1880
nearly 22,400,000 hectares of free land was in the hands of cattlemen or the railroads.
In 1862 Congress also voted a charter to the Union Pacific Railroad, which pushed westward
from Council Bluffs, Iowa, using mostly the labor of ex soldiers and Irish immigrants. At the
same time, the Central Pacific Railroad began to build eastward from Sacramento, California,
relying heavily on Chinese immigrant labor. The whole country was stirred as the two lines
steadily approached each other, finally meeting on May 10, 1869, at Promontory Point in Utah.
The months of laborious travel hitherto separating the two oceans was now cut to about six days.
The continental rail network grew steadily, and by 1884, four great lines linked the central
Mississippi Valley area with the Pacific.
The first great rush of population to the Far West was drawn to the mountainous regions, where
gold was found in California in 1848, in Colorado

Sirens In The Odyssey
Homer and Atwood showcase the multifaceted nature of the myth of the Sirens through various
perspectives, with varying tones, and utilizing imagery. Homer recounts the narrative of a man
sufficiently shrewd to hear the siren s tune and not lose his life; meanwhile Atwood portrays a siren,
alluring men to her island to trap them.
Although the tones differentiate from each other within the two passages, both utilize cleverness
with trickery. Odysseus runs with his life secure, and the Siren feels accomplished; her boring
song...works every time. Phrases such as now with a sharp word demonstrate how the tone in
Homer s passage is powerful and rich. In any case, as Homer s tone has manly characteristics,
Atwood s has femininity. Her tone feels sinister yet beseeching. These two passages pair as two
parts of a whole. Odysseus represents a prey, attempting hysterically to escape demise, while the
Siren is a savage predator, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Homer s words are manly, effective, and powerful. He utilizes words like sharp, strength, strong
hands, and sharp sword. The description illustrates a man who is not only cruising by the Sirens,
but heading to war with them. Homer depicts the Sirens song as ravishing, thrilling, and urgent.
Their voices influence Odysseus emotions. Additionally, there almost is a feeling of sexual tension
taken from this sequence of imagery. Atwood s imagery, however, feels distant from a manly nature
and certainly less sensual. The phrases bird suit and squatting nearly provide the picture of an
absurd environment; meanwhile feathery maniacs and fatal and valuable radiate a graver tone. The
imagery along with the tone influences the reader to understand and feel sympathy for this poor
Siren, for she abhors what she is. Overall, the poem starts enchantingly threatening, then turns to be
relatively innocent, and lastly closes with a similar grave and lethal or clever

Ellicott City Flood Case Study
In the Washington DC area, it is not at all uncommon to see flash flood warnings scroll across the
television screen, but nothing comes of it other than some rain. This past weekend, however, during
Memorial Day weekend, Ellicott City, Maryland, which sits just outside of the beltway,
experienced a horrible flash flood. The death toll still has yet to be announced, as cleanup and the
search for survivors has just begun. Two waves of intense flooding hit the town unexpectedly, and
with little warning. The town is a quaint little area with cute shops and storefronts, which sits in a
valley, and the main street cuts a swath between two higher vistas. Several storms had been
forecast earlier that day, and heavy rain was expected, but no one could have predicted such
devastation, in such a short amount of time. This is the second massive flash flood to hit this area
in as many years, leaving business owners, and residents alike, stunned and heartbroken.... Show

of Ellicott City. Howard County Emergency Management has 14 Fire and Rescue Station houses,
and one located in Ellicott City proper ( Howard County, Maryland Departments Fire and Rescue

plans, and disaster management options, as well as to discuss the All Hazards Mitigation Plan and
Flood Mitigation Plan. At the meeting, officials listed the potential dangers, and ranked them
according to potential for damage. No surprise to anyone, at the top of the list, ranking number one,

Special Educational Needs And Disability
(SEND) stands for Special Educational Needs and Disability . QUOTE A learner s needs may be
too complex for a class teacher to fully cater provide for. It is possible that more support and even
specialist help maybe needed for example speech and language therapy. This is usually when a
child is described as having special needs . (Somerville Primary School, 2016). It is true that having
SEND can affect a learner s capacity to learn. A Send learner may show inappropriate behaviour,
find it hard to socialise, struggle with writing and reading or have other issues in class. This is not
an exhaustive list. Diagram (City of London, 2016).
It is recognised that as a teacher it is important to adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and
needs of all pupils DFES (2013). If a learner needs SEND support, it is recommended that a
graduated approach of Assess Plan Do Review should be employed. (p16, DFES (2014). Learners
should receive more support as needed.
It is true that local authorities are tasked with identifying all young people in the locality who have
SEND or a disability however:
anyone can bring a child or young person who they believe has or probably has SEND or a
disability to the attention of a local authority (Section 24 of the Children and Families Act 2014)
In fact: CCGs, NHS Trusts and NHS Foundation Trusts must inform the appropriate local authority
if they identify a child under compulsory school age as having, or probably having, SEND or a

Singer, Martin, and Kelner studied 126 patients on dialysis, diagnosed with AIDS, or residents
of long term care facilities, to determine their views on end of life issues. Their results identified
five domains of quality care at the end of life. These were adequate pain and symptom
management, avoiding inappropriate prolongation of dying, achieving a sense of control,
relieving burden, and strengthening relationships with loved ones (p. 163, 1999). The
participants expressed fear of lingering or kept alive when they could no longer enjoy their
lives. Many stated that they would not wish to go on life support if they were not going to
improve or have a chance to live a normal life again. Several mentioned that being placed on life
support was the same as being a guinea pig. There were conflicting reports on the choice of dying
at home or in a hospital. Some wanted to be at home, but others felt that was a burden on the
family (Singer, Martin, Kelner, 1999). Another study by Gourdji, McVey, Purden in 2009
interviewed palliative care patients about the meaning of quality of life at this stage of their illness,
and the factors that would improve their quality of life. They found that several factors, including
their approach to life, their approach to their illness, and their ideal of quality of life shaped their
end of life experiences. These patients stressed that they most wanted to continue

Trust In Langston Hughes
Trust in Langston Hughes Thank you. Ma am
Trust is one of many components of life and it is shown through our actions and how we carry
ourselves. We as human beings learn to trust each other by the words we say to one another and the
actions we show to others. There are many lessons we can learn through the short but powerful
story by Langston Hughes Thank You. Ma am . Throughout the story there are several lessons and
traits that the reader can interpret such as thinking twice before you execute the plan that you had
in mind, sympathy, charisma, and even giving second chances. But more importantly, there is one
lesson that specifically plays a huge role in the story itself and in American culture today, and that
is trust others. There are several ways these lessons and interpretations can be put into real life
situations and how they can affect us today in real time. In broadest terms, human nature is known
as the psychological characteristics, feelings, and behavioral traits shared by all of mankind. In the
short story, there are several examples of trust, thinking before acting, giving second chances, and
materialism. She was walking alone, when a boy ran up behind her and tried to snatch her purse.

As stated in the article 5 reasons why horse races are cruel, Because they re forced to run so fast,
a lot of horses get hurt. But instead of letting them rest and recover from their injuries, many
trainers and veterinarians give them drugs so they won t feel the pain and can keep on racing.
This can cause their injuries to get even worse. Sometimes they re also given illegal drugs or
other stuff that isn t good for them, like snake venom and alcohol anything to try to make them
run faster. These horses are forced to run fast. No matter what it takes. Imagine drugging a tired
olympian so he would run faster. This is what we are doing to these animals. This is in no way
humane. As stated in the article The Hidden Cruelty Behind Horseracing, Drugging horses to
enhance their performance is a common practice in the horseracing industry. During their
undercover investigation, PETA witnessed horse trainers giving their animals drugs for
hypothyroidism to speed up their metabolism. Not only does the veterinarians and trainers drug
the overworked animals, they hide it. They hide the horrible, abusive deed that they ve committed.
It is not ok to drug innocent animals but to hide it, that is a whole nother level of wrong. The
PETA had to conduct a private investigation just to get information about this abusive act. Finally
as also claimed in the article The Hidden Cruelty Behind Horseracing, Many of the horses also had

External Estimates of the Number of Abortions Pooled and by Individual Year
The counts of the total number of abortions for the study period years come from published
information from the Guttmacher Institute s census of abortion providers (Finer and Henshaw
2003; Jones and Kavanaugh 2011). Following prior research, I used the CDC s age distribution for
each year to calculate the expected number of abortions that occurred in the age distribution of Add
Health for each year, except in the years when an age distribution was collected by the Guttmacher
Institute s survey of abortion patients (Kost and Jones 2007; Fu et al. 1998). Because the CDC data
is provided in ages ranges (under 15; 15 19; 20 24; 25 29; 30 34; 35 39; 40+), the Add Health data
was restricted to best match these ranges (see Appendix 2 for further details).
The overall quality analyses (years 1994 through 2007) could potentially include pregnancies
between the ages of 10 (the youngest individuals in Wave 1 in 1994) and 32 (the oldest
individuals in Wave 4 in 2008). Though it should be noted that pregnancies under the age of 13
would be somewhat improbable considering the median age of menarche in the U.S. is 12.43 ...

Leishmaniasis Essay
Leishmaniasis
The Sting of The Sand Fly
By Jared Yeazell
Admittedly, since the beginning of time, disease has played a drastic role in the history of
society. It has affected economic conditions, wars, and natural disasters. The impact of any
disease can be far greater than some far better known catastrophes. In 1918, an epidemic of
influenza swept the globe, killing between 20 million and 40 million people. Within a few months,
more than 500,000 Americans had died. This is a number far greater than the number of people
killed during World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War

Physicians in the Indian subcontinent would describe it as Kala Azar. More recently, evidence of
the cutaneous form of the disease was found in the Ecuador and Peru in the pre Inca potteries
depicting king lesions and deformed faces dating back to the first century AD. Additionally, 15th
and 16th century texts from the Inca period and from the Spanish colonial mention Valley Sickness,
Andean Sickness, or White Leprosy which are likely to be Cutaneous Leishmaniasis.
Following this a little further, Leishmaniasis is usually transmitted in many tropical and subtropical
countries, and is found in certain parts of about 88 countries. Currently, approximately 350 million
people are living in these areas. It affects as many as 12 million people worldwide, with around 2
million new cases each year. Leishmaniasis is also found through much of the Americas from
northern Argentina to southern Texas, though not in Uruguay or Chile, and has recently been
shown to be spreading to north Texas. During 2004, it is estimated that around 3,400 Colombian
troops, operating in the jungles near the south of the country, were infected with Leishmaniasis.
Within Afghanistan, Leishmaniasis occurs commonly due to bad sanitations and waste left
uncollected in the streets. Additionally, Leishmaniasis has been reported by U.S. troops stationed
in Saudi Arabia and Iraq since the Gulf War of 1990. Also, in some areas of southern Europe,
Leishmaniasis is becoming an

Emotions In Jack London s To Build A Fire
One prominent and reoccurring theme of the story To build a Fire by Jack London is the need
to possess instincts. The importance of one s instincts is brought to light when, despite
warnings from the locals, a man decides to travel along the Yukon Trail with only his native
wolf dog. It is during this trek, when they are faced with the dangers of the extreme cold, that
London brings rise to his theme: the need for one to possess instincts. He does so throughout the
story by showing the contrast of the dog s instinctive behavior and its ability to survive
compared to that of the man s. He shows the contrast by pointing out the man s unconcern for the
cold, his inability to sense danger, and finally his incapability to survive in the wilderness. The
most obvious contrast between the man and the dog is their differing reactions to the cold. The
temperature of 75 degrees below 0 does not strike fear or concern in the man. He sees it as cold
and uncomfortable and that is all. (London, 65) However, the dog, which is suited for the cold of
the Yukon, is concerned, because it knows how brutal the Yukon can be. Though it lacks the
intelligence that the man has, it is better equipped for the wilderness. The dog has primal instincts
that were passed down from its ancestors while the man does not. It is because of that instinctthat
the animal was worried by the great cold. (London, 66) London effectively illustrates the theme of
instincts being crucial to survival by

Enduring Love In Wuthering Heights
Wuthering Heights: An Ever Lasting Love Emily Bronte takes romance to a darker side in her
gothic novel Wuthering Heights. She develops a relationship between the characters and the setting
which further reveal her central themes and conveys her idea. Bronte s work of art makes an
attempt to argue that social class has the power to be a deciding factor in who one chooses to love.
This is seen and conveyed through her characterization, the setting, and revealed through central
themes. In Wuthering Heightscomplex characters are created to further emphasize how fatal
attraction can lead to major conflicts. Bronte s gothic spin begins with Heathcliffs character who
arrives to Wuthering Heights when Mr. Earnshaw returns from Liverpool.... Show more content on

It is instantly recognized what the difference between the two settings is. Wuthering Heights is
viewed in a darker light whereas Thrushcross Grange is bright and more inviting. After the
incident Catherine is then ordered to stay at the Grange with the Linton s for a couple weeks.
During this time, she transforms from a wild savage girl (Baba) into a lady. Heathcliff recalls
Catherine s superb treatment at the Lintons, Afterwards, they dried and combed her beautiful
hair, and gave her a pair of enormous slippers, and wheeled her to the fire; as merry as she could
be (Bronte) Catherine s treatment contrasts the way Mr. Lockwood was greeted at Wuthering
Heights. It is evident that the two manors are as different as the people in them. A
transformation is made in Catherine s appearance and character when she marries Edgar and
moves over to Grange where she experiences life being spoiled and pampered as she pleases.
When she is welcomed back to the Heights Heathcliff greets her and in return is insulted when
she laughs to find him dirty (55) Evidently, this supports that her transformation is not only
physical but also spiritual for her comparison between them two. Also adding to the fact that the
two manors are better understood as two different worlds. Even though Catherine grew up in
Heathcliff s world, her move has caused her to change making their love impossible to pursue.
Since then, she comes to spend more time with Edgar while cutting time to be with Heathcliff.
She explains to Nelly her reasons for taking Edgars hand in marriage the ground under his feet,
and the air over his head, and every thing he touches, and every word he says I love all his looks,
and all his actions, and him entirely, and altogether (Bronte) It is undeniable that her love for
Edgar is based off his prestige and not entirely for who he is. She is seduced by his wealth and

been re evaluated, standardised and aprimorated in the past years. The change from acute renal
failure to AKI happened due the fact the even mild change in function or structure of the kidney
can cause abrupt clinical manifestations such as change in extracellular volume and electrolytes
balance and inability to properly excrete nitrogenous waste products like urea. The old
terminology is used now saved for cases were renal replacement therapy is been considered due
to severity. The AKI diagnostic criteria is based in a 48 hour creatinin serum level rise by 0.3mg

Cinderella Ate My Daughter By Peggy Orenstein
Cinderella Ate My Daughter by Peggy Orenstein
A Review of the Literature Growing up in today s society can be traumatizing for any child.
When it comes to growing up as a young girl, however, it can be downright devastating, but not
only for the child but the parent as well. There are so many decisions to be made when choosing
how to raise your child, assuring that you have instilled proper values to develop a healthy sense
of self worth and confidence. Upon reading the book Cinderella Ate My Daughter: Dispatches from
the Frontlines of the New Girlie Girl Culture , by Peggy Orenstein, I was extremely captivated to
absorb the opinions that she had on raising a girl and all of the feminine influences that naturally
surround her. The author herself had stated right from the first page how she initially wished for
the child in her womb was a boy. My preliminary notion that joined this book to the course
material was assumed before I even began reading, as several obvious details it became apparent
that the book for sure had to be about gender roles and gender identity. The whole topic of
princesses in the title, as well as the way the books cover flaunted pink and shimmery glitter it
was just a telltale sign to have gender specific ties. That impression continued as I began reading
the very first chapter boldly titled Why I Hoped for a Boy . There were such forthright examples
making it overly apparent that she, the author, would be discussing the sexes, meaning girls vs.

Hate Exposed in Babi Yar Essay
Hate Exposed in Babi Yar
Babi Yar, a poem written by Yevgeny Yevtushenko, tells the story of the Nazi invasion into a small
part of Russia, in which, throughout the duration of World War II, over one hundred thousand
Jews, Gypsies and Russian POW s were brutally murdered. However, what is unique about this
particular perspective is that the narrator is not a Jew, but a mere observer who is aghast at the
atrocities that took place during the Holocaust. It is through allusions, as well as other literary
devices, that Yevtushenko elucidates caustically the absurdities of the hatred that caused the
Holocaust, in addition to the narrator s identification with the Jews and their history of oppression.

Perhaps even more of a travesty, however, is the fact that humankind has not learned from the past
in light of the fact that this episode is merely one link in a long chain of terrors.
Yevtushenko goes on to allude to Anne Frank, a young Jewish teenager who left behind a diary of
her thoughts and dreams, and how the Nazis strip her of any potential future she has when she is
murdered in the death camps. Clearly, the allusion creates images in the mind of the reader that
mere descriptions via the use of words could not.
Another effective literary device used in the poem is the first person narrative in which the narrator
identifies with those victims which he describes. This is seen in the case where the narrator says I
am Dreyfus , or Anne Frank, I am she. The narrator does not claim to understand what the feelings
and thoughts of these people are, but rather, he is acknowledging the fact that they are feeling,
detested and denounced and that unlike the rest of the world who turned its head, or the Russians
who actually abetted such heinous crimes, this gentile narrator can not empathize, but does
sympathize with his Jewish brethren.
Another extremely powerful device used by Yevtushenko is the detail of description and imagery
used to describe events and feelings that are in both those whom he identifies with, as well as

1) What actions prompted the border control offensive and made the issue of illegal immigration a

officeholders utilized crusade advertisements highlighting unlawful outsiders are crossing the

development to prevent unauthorized workers from entering the U.S. The U.S. Government

Similarities Between Hester Prynne And Legally Blonde
The novel, The Scarlet Letter, and the play, Legally Blonde, both portray a strong female lead. In
the novel, Hester Prynne is labeled with a scarlet letter, A , for committing a sin. As the story
progresses she is able to change the meaning of her symbol into something more pleasing to the
public eye. In the beginning of the play, Elle Woodsis seen by her peers as a silly, dumb, blonde ,
but similar to Hester, she is able to change the way she is seen by others in a positive way. Both
of these independent women use their power to influence their society in order to change the
way they are seen by the people around them. Elle Woods from Legally Blonde begins her
journey as president of her sorority, Delta Nu. She is seen as the happy little blonde that always
wears pink. She is given this stereotype by society. Until she is able to change stereotype, that is
all that most people see her as. Her first step in changing her reputation is transferring to Harvard
s School of Law. Her initial drive to attend Harvard was to chase after someone she loved. But
Elle soon realized that she enjoyed studying law more than she thought. After many hours of
studying and encouragement from a professor, Elle was able to prove herself in front of her
fellow students. She showed them that she is more than just pink clothes and scented pink
paper. Elle even takes her change a step further, by proving herself worthy to society in a very
important court case. Elle is able to take charge and evidently win her case, thus helping an
innocent person. Elle finds thrill in this new person she has created within herself and is glad she
did it. She feels as if she is finally more than what society had previously seen her as and is proud
that she was the one who was able to make that change for herself.
Hester Prynne from Hawthorne s, The Scarlet Letter, is marginalized by society for having
committed a sin. She too is given a stereotype by those around her, similar to Elle Woods. In the
beginning, no one dares to speak or even look at Hester because of the A she wears on her chest.
Hester feels as if she needs to change the meaning of this A that is stuck to her, so she sets out to
do so. Every little action that she does,

Anthrax (Bacillus Anthracis) Essay
Anthrax (Bacillus anthracis) is an acute infectious disease caused by the spore forming bacterium.
The most common victims of anthrax are warm blooded animals, but it can also infect humans.
Anthrax spores can be produced in a powdery form for biological warfare. When inhaled by
humans, these particles cause respiratory failure and death within a week. Because anthraxis
considered to be a potential agent for use in biological warfare, the Department of Defense (DOD),
in 1998, announced it would begin a systematic vaccination of all U.S. militarypersonnel. (DOD,
1998) Anthrax infection occurs in three forms: cutaneous (skin), inhalation, and gastrointestinal. B.

Inhalation: Initial symptoms may resemble a common cold. After several days, the symptoms may
progress to severe breathing problems and shock. Inhalation anthrax usually results in death in 1 2
days after onset of the acute symptoms.
Intestinal: The intestinal disease form of anthrax may follow ingestion of contaminated meat and
is characterized by an acute inflammation of the intestinal tract. Nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting
and fever are followed by abdominal pain, vomiting of blood, and severe diarrhea. Intestinal
anthrax results in death in 25% to 60% of cases. The incubation period is usually within seven
days. There are no reports of the disease spreading from human to human. Direct person to person
spread of anthrax most likely does not occur. Once a person has been infected with anthrax and
survived, a second bout with this disease is unlikely.
To treat anthrax, doctors can prescribe antibiotics. Usually penicillin based antibiotics such as
Cipro are preferred, but erythromycin, tetracycline, or chloramphenicol can also be used. To be
effective, treatment should be initiated early. The disease could be fatal if left untreated. (Sofaer, et

The Concepts Of Activity- Based Costing
ABSTRACT This paper will discuss and analyze the concepts of Activity Based Costing (ABC) in
the manufacturing industry. Specifically, the document will focus on General Motors (GM), and
the innovation of one of their manufacturing facilities who used ABC to predict energy usage in the
manufacturing of automobiles. The study yielded a successful ABC predictive energy model which
provided a structure for competitive advantage for the corporation.
INTRODUCTION
General Motors (GM) is one of the most renowned automakers in the world. GM is well known
for their streamlined assembly processes which saves money and time in the production of cars.
A study was conducted at one of GM s vehicle assembly plants as part of a research project to
examine how the ABC model provides value. GM specifically focused on its potential to
determine expected energy use in a plant for varying production schedules in order to evaluate
Demand and Response offers. According to the case study written by Jurek, Bras, Guldberg, D
Arcy, Oh, and Biller, energy costswere steadily rising and were predicted to continue this trend
going into the future. At the same time, utility companies were beginning to implement Smart Grid
technologies to increase the efficiency of energy distribution. One resulting program to emerge
from these new technologies was Demand and Response contracting. (Jurek, Bras, Guldberg, D

Renewable Sources Of Energy As Being Sustainable.it
This essay seeks to identify a number of challenges which are encountered when trying to
identify what a sustainable source of energy is. To do this, it first briefly states ways in which
the term sustainable energy has been interpreted by various bodies and individuals and ways in
which people seek to identify an energy source which is truly sustainable. This essay seeks to
point out the flaw in classifying all renewable sources of energy as being sustainable. It will
achieve this by comparing two energy related projects, proving how sustainable a non renewable
source can be and vice versa. Lastly, it will prove ways in which different people s misconceptions
can affect further progress with these energy related projects.
A number of suitable definitions of sustainable energy run through this essay. Sustainable Energy
has been defined as; A living harmony between the equitable availability of energy services to all
people and the preservation of the earth for future generations (Tester, Drake, Driscoll, Golay,
Peters, 2005). This from my own point of view is the most accurate definition by far. Pointedly, it is
in contrast with a number of definitions; for example this one by Denzil Walton stating that;
Sustainable energy is regarded as the system of producing, transporting, distributing and consuming
energy in a way that promotes a reduction in the rate of consumption of non renewable resources
which lead to environmental degradation while providing at socially

The baccalaureate student learns to apply nursing theory. Baccalaureate nurses have been shown
to provide better patient care. (Aiken, Clarke, Sloane, Lake and Cheney, 2008) (deback, 1986)
noted that more educated nurses act independently, take responsibilities for judgment and take
on advocacy roles. Less educated nurses are so content driven, that they cannot guide their
nursing care beyond what is text book or has been taught in school. The following is an example
of the above: Mr. Doe has just been admitted to your floor for the third time in two months. He is
a brittle diabetic and each admission he comes in with ketoacidosis. An ADN would treat them
per protocol and doctor s orders. In three days he is discharged with hopes he won t be back
again within a week. Take the BSN and give them the same patient/scenario. He/she would treat
the ketoacidosis just like the ADN. The baccalaureate nurse is able to go even further. They would
be able to see that this man has had 3 admissions in 2 months and realize there is a problem and
would look for a solution to correct the problem with the end result, decreasing so many admissions
to the hospital (for the same problem.) iom. (2003). Mentions different functions that a
baccalaureate nurse is prepared to do. These functions all tie in with the nursing metaparadigm of
person, environment, health and nursing practice. A baccalaureate nurse, for instance, is taught to
treat the person as a whole, from

Dna And The Creation And Proper Functioning Of Every...
DNA is like the blueprint for the creation and proper functioning of every living organism.
Organisms can sometimes be divided into prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Examples of prokaryotes
and eukaryotes include bacteria and humans, respectively. These organisms must possess a
method of replicating DNA, so a copy is provided for each cell that divides. Each cell s
responsibility is coordinated by the piece of DNAand thus, makes it a very valuable part of the cell
and organism. So what are the methods of replicating DNA in eukaryotes and prokaryotes? DNA
replicationin prokaryotes consists of several enzymes and proteins which are responsible for
different tasks, but together make the process seem effortless. DNA replication in eukaryotes is
similar, but more complicated given that eukaryotic chromosomes are linear, possess more than
one origin, and have nucleosome structures which need to be replicated. Regardless, a technique
named PCR, developed by Kary Mullis, has the ability to produce exponentially large amounts
of a specific piece of DNA from trace amounts of template DNA (Bio Rad). PCR has the ability
to replicate DNA in eukaryotic cells. Prokaryotic replication and PCR both replicate DNA, so the
similarities are apparent in terms of methods, but there also appears to be subtle differences
concerning the enzymes and proteins utilized during each process. As stated previously, similarities
are clearly apparent between the prokaryotic replication and PCR. Before

The Cultural Impact Of Technology
The world today is very different from the world our grandparents lived in. There are a lot of
advancements in technology that make things obviously different, but there are also many changes
in our culture and society that has been affected by technological changes that many people fail to
realize. One film that showcases the cultural impact of technology is the movie Hackers, directed
by Lain Softley. The film is centered around the latest technology available (in 1995 when the film
was released) and the growing culture centered around the elite hackercommunity. The premise of
the film is that a group of hackers are being framed for a virus that was launched to capsize ships
if a demand for five million dollars was not met. The group of hackers work together to prove that
they are innocent by hacking into the database of a major corporation. In that database is the virus
that was created by the company s head of cyber securitythat was supposed to steal a total of
twenty five million dollars. The ships that were to be destroyed were all linked through satellite
connections. Each ship is automatically guided and managed by a central computer. While it is
commonplace for companies today to use satellite guidance systems and remote access to onboard
computers, the movie does nudge the story along by making the whole system extremely
vulnerable. Such things like three character passwords and single centralized command centers are
obvious flaws with the system used in the

How Boys Become Men Essay
How Boys Become Men
The article How Boys Become Men written by Jon Katz, gives a positive statement on how boys

dog one day, he saw a boy get beaten by a group of older boys. While walking towards him, Katz
asked if he was okay; the boy said yes and begun to swing like nothing happened. I believe that
what Jon Katz states is true, because the fact is; boys are always going to think they re the Alpha

Momentarily, they began swimming and Alex ignored the bump on his leg. Boys in my opinion
never want to show they are not up for a challenge. Every time my brother s friends come over,
they always began playing around and see who is the strongest out of all of them. Or from what I
see, they could also began to lift certain objects and see who can throw them the farthest.
Lastly, it s not all about the who can be the better rock climber or who is the strongest, but maybe
who can capture a girls heart first. I have seen this many times from boys who have lost friendships
over the same girl they liked, only because they both wanted to be with her. Sadly, only one gets
the girl. This is were things get really hectic, and boys sometimes become foes, instead of friends.
Boys often get very competitive if they both want the same girl, just like my brother did with his ex
best friend, Joey. Also they never want to admit they lost, sometimes they simply say they didn t try
hard enough.
In conclusion, yes, boys want to be that strong, fearless, awesome guy that they have been taught
mostly by, their parents or society. But just as Jon Katz says, they want love and understanding
when things do not go right for them. Which is very similar how girls are as well. Boys just tend
not to show it, because of the pride they have or what they have gone through in their childhood.
To sum it all up, boys are always going to be the same, but

Ancient Japanese Government Structure
Japanese government structure is typically characterized by three different eras and structure:
ancient shogunates, the Meiji restoration, and contemporary government. Ancient Japan consisted
of independent territories that all fell under a collective rule known as the shogunate, which was

used military force to keep order and peace throughout the various districts or territories. Many

The imperial capital was moved from Kyoto to Edo, which was renamed Tokyo (Encyclopedia

stories and important doctrine is outlined. In John 10, both the story of the Good Shepherd and
Christ s interactions with the Jewish leaders give insight to the historical reference and meaning
of the doctrine in a modern setting. John 10 is a very interesting and important block of
scripture. It covers the idea of Christ as the Good Shepherd. He states in John 10:11, I am the
good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. This presents one of the main
ideas of John 10, which is that Christ is the leader of His sheep, which are His people. He
declares that the good shepherd will die for his flock, which is exactly what Christ does. He also
defends his statements from the Jewish leaders, as they want to stone him for uttering such
blasphemy , according to Blair G. VanDyke. He uses both old scriptures and logic to defend his
position, which brings interesting implications in a modern context. Both of these ideas and their
importance can be viewed in differing perspectives from both

James Popham Analysis
How do people support these ideas? What would improve the educational system using these ideals?
In today s field of education, there is a transparent division between the data driven outside group
of education reformist, and the day to day inside group who facilitates the educational standards
and curriculum. Members of the outside group are often criticized for their apparent one size fits
all; standardized model of education. Many outside appointed officials boast about the continued
growth in student achievement from an analytical standard, while many teachers ask but at what
cost? In an article written by W. James Popham, he characterizes the outsider s educational model
as an assault not only the field of education itself, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dewey s statement was and should still be the ideology of what education is. The quality of a
student s education should not be based on what percentile he ranks on a standardized assessment
against students from 41 other states. What skills has that student learned during his/hers
matriculation through their respective education system? What skills can they continually practice
in their everyday life? If education continues to follow the model of the outsiders , then students
and teachers will continue to simply cram for the test.
What are the issues of school improvement? What suggestions for solutions are possible?
With the modern trend in student and teacher accountability, the art of teaching is slowly becoming
lost. The primary objectives of the Department of Education, school districts, teachers and students
today are to simply ace the end of the year assessments. This current model of education abandons
the beliefs of past educators where strengthening a teacher s instructional strategies would surely
outweigh the production line assembly of general curriculums and standardized

Analysis Of Jason Brennan s Second Chapter Of Against...
In Jason Brennan s second chapter of Against Democracy (2016) multiple topics are discussed
pertaining to the political action of voting. Throughout this chapter Brennan explores the ideologies
of rational ignorance and rational irrationality about politics, as well as the psychological benefits
of holding firm to an irrational belief, and the cognitive biases or errors displayed in society.
Brennan s views create controversy and often times don t seem to directly favor one another.
Although I admired the viewpoints Brennan gave, I had a difficult time buying into the
philosophical ideas he presented. As we progress in this paper, we will learn more about Brennan s
narrow view of politicsbeing only associated to voting. Brennan created adequate argument for the
philosophical measures he presents, however this strict polices don t seem to equate with democracy
in its entirety.
Within the second chapter of Against Democracy (2016), we become aware of rational ignorance
about politics and rational irrationality about politics. These two subjects hold considerable weight
in Brennan s expression of what it means to be political. Rational ignorance is when the costs of
acquiring knowledge surpass the benefits of having that knowledge (Brennan, 2016). In relation to
politics, which Brennan exclusively only refers to as voting and not any other political action,
rational ignorance is when there is no benefit to learning political matter because you vote will not
matter or produce

A Brief Look at Charlie Chaplin
Every day millions of Americans go to theaters with their families to enjoy movies. Watching films
has become one of the most popular activities to do. Although plenty of people know of Charlie
Chaplin, most do not know any real information about him. Charlie Chaplin has been a major
contributor to America s advancement in the filmindustry from his innovative beginnings, and
perseverance to improve and succeed, to his overall achievements in history. Charlie Chaplin
was born in South London on April 16, 1889. He was the first child of Hannah and Charles
Chaplin. Charles was vaudeville actor. Hannah was a vaudeville singer. Charlie s father was a
drunk and he later left his family when he was three years old when he found out his wife had an
affair with another actor, Leo Dryden. They soon had a child named George, who left to live
with his father. Since Hannah was now a single mother, she was struggling to find a way to
provide for her children. She had another son that was older than Charlie, from a previous
relationship (Schwartz). Hannah s singing alone was not enough to earn her the money to care
for two boys. She took up sweatshop work on a sewing machine she rented to earn extra income.
Due to the small amount of income they had, Charlie s family moved in and out of orphanages
and boys homes on a regular basis. Hannah s career as a singer ended abruptly in 1894. She lost
her voice during a performance. While the crowd was getting rowdy and starting to throw things

  • 4. The Domestication of the Last Frontier Essay The Domestication of the Last Frontier In 1865 the frontier line generally followed the western limits of the states bordering the Mississippi River, bulging outward to include the eastern sections of Kansas and Nebraska. Beyond this thin edge of pioneer farms, lay the prairie and sagebrush lands that stretched to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Then, for nearly 1,600 kilometers, loomed the huge bulk of mountain ranges, many rich in silver, gold and other metals. On the far side, plains and deserts were part of this region; here laid the Last Frontier the Great Plains . For a long time, the region had been called the Great American Dessert, a barrier to cross on the way to the Pacific, unfit for human habitation and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By 1890 the frontier had disappeared. Settlement was spurred by the Homestead Act of 1862, which granted free farms of 64 hectares to citizens who would occupy and improve the land. Under the homestead Act of 1862 a farmer could either realize the old dream of free land and simply by staking out a claim and living on it for years, or by buying the land at $1.25 an acre after six months. (Tindall 878) Unfortunately for the would be farmers, the land itself was suited more for cattle ranching than farming, and by 1880 nearly 22,400,000 hectares of free land was in the hands of cattlemen or the railroads. In 1862 Congress also voted a charter to the Union Pacific Railroad, which pushed westward from Council Bluffs, Iowa, using mostly the labor of ex soldiers and Irish immigrants. At the same time, the Central Pacific Railroad began to build eastward from Sacramento, California, relying heavily on Chinese immigrant labor. The whole country was stirred as the two lines steadily approached each other, finally meeting on May 10, 1869, at Promontory Point in Utah. The months of laborious travel hitherto separating the two oceans was now cut to about six days. The continental rail network grew steadily, and by 1884, four great lines linked the central Mississippi Valley area with the Pacific. Homer recounts the narrative of a man sufficiently shrewd to hear the siren s tune and not lose his life; meanwhile Atwood portrays a siren, alluring men to her island to trap them. Although the tones differentiate from each other within the two passages, both utilize cleverness with trickery. Odysseus runs with his life secure, and the Siren feels accomplished; her boring song...works every time. Phrases such as now with a sharp word demonstrate how the tone in Homer s passage is powerful and rich. In any case, as Homer s tone has manly characteristics, Atwood s has femininity. Her tone feels sinister yet beseeching. These two passages pair as two parts of a whole. Their voices influence Odysseus emotions. Additionally, there almost is a feeling of sexual tension taken from this sequence of imagery. Atwood s imagery, however, feels distant from a manly nature and certainly less sensual. The phrases bird suit and squatting nearly provide the picture of an absurd environment; meanwhile feathery maniacs and fatal and valuable radiate a graver tone. Following prior research, I used the CDC s age distribution for each year to calculate the expected number of abortions that occurred in the age distribution of Add Health for each year, except in the years when an age distribution was collected by the Guttmacher Institute s survey of abortion patients (Kost and Jones 2007; Fu et al. 1998). • 17. Emotions In Jack London s To Build A Fire One prominent and reoccurring theme of the story To build a Fire by Jack London is the need to possess instincts. The importance of one s instincts is brought to light when, despite warnings from the locals, a man decides to travel along the Yukon Trail with only his native wolf dog. It is during this trek, when they are faced with the dangers of the extreme cold, that London brings rise to his theme: the need for one to possess instincts. He does so throughout the story by showing the contrast of the dog s instinctive behavior and its ability to survive compared to that of the man s. He shows the contrast by pointing out the man s unconcern for the cold, his inability to sense danger, and finally his incapability to survive in the wilderness. The most obvious contrast between the man and the dog is their differing reactions to the cold. The temperature of 75 degrees below 0 does not strike fear or concern in the man. He sees it as cold and uncomfortable and that is all. (London, 65) However, the dog, which is suited for the cold of the Yukon, is concerned, because it knows how brutal the Yukon can be. Though it lacks the intelligence that the man has, it is better equipped for the wilderness. The dog has primal instincts that were passed down from its ancestors while the man does not. It is because of that instinctthat the animal was worried by the great cold. (London, 66) London effectively illustrates the theme of instincts being crucial to survival by ... Heathcliff recalls Catherine s superb treatment at the Lintons, Afterwards, they dried and combed her beautiful hair, and gave her a pair of enormous slippers, and wheeled her to the fire; as merry as she could be (Bronte) Catherine s treatment contrasts the way Mr. Lockwood was greeted at Wuthering Heights. A transformation is made in Catherine s appearance and character when she marries Edgar and moves over to Grange where she experiences life being spoiled and pampered as she pleases. • 22. Hate Exposed in Babi Yar Essay Hate Exposed in Babi Yar Babi Yar, a poem written by Yevgeny Yevtushenko, tells the story of the Nazi invasion into a small part of Russia, in which, throughout the duration of World War II, over one hundred thousand Jews, Gypsies and Russian POW s were brutally murdered. However, what is unique about this particular perspective is that the narrator is not a Jew, but a mere observer who is aghast at the atrocities that took place during the Holocaust. It is through allusions, as well as other literary devices, that Yevtushenko elucidates caustically the absurdities of the hatred that caused the Holocaust, in addition to the narrator s identification with the Jews and their history of oppression. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Perhaps even more of a travesty, however, is the fact that humankind has not learned from the past in light of the fact that this episode is merely one link in a long chain of terrors. Yevtushenko goes on to allude to Anne Frank, a young Jewish teenager who left behind a diary of her thoughts and dreams, and how the Nazis strip her of any potential future she has when she is murdered in the death camps. Clearly, the allusion creates images in the mind of the reader that mere descriptions via the use of words could not. Another effective literary device used in the poem is the first person narrative in which the narrator identifies with those victims which he describes. This is seen in the case where the narrator says I am Dreyfus , or Anne Frank, I am she. The narrator does not claim to understand what the feelings and thoughts of these people are, but rather, he is acknowledging the fact that they are feeling, detested and denounced and that unlike the rest of the world who turned its head, or the Russians who actually abetted such heinous crimes, this gentile narrator can not empathize, but does sympathize with his Jewish brethren. Another extremely powerful device used by Yevtushenko is the detail of description and imagery used to describe events and feelings that are in both those whom he identifies with, as well as ... In the novel, Hester Prynne is labeled with a scarlet letter, A , for committing a sin. As the story progresses she is able to change the meaning of her symbol into something more pleasing to the public eye. In the beginning of the play, Elle Woodsis seen by her peers as a silly, dumb, blonde , but similar to Hester, she is able to change the way she is seen by others in a positive way. Both of these independent women use their power to influence their society in order to change the way they are seen by the people around them. Elle Woods from Legally Blonde begins her journey as president of her sorority, Delta Nu. She is seen as the happy little blonde that always wears pink. She is given this stereotype by society. Until she is able to change stereotype, that is all that most people see her as. Her first step in changing her reputation is transferring to Harvard s School of Law. Her initial drive to attend Harvard was to chase after someone she loved. But Elle soon realized that she enjoyed studying law more than she thought. After many hours of studying and encouragement from a professor, Elle was able to prove herself in front of her fellow students. She showed them that she is more than just pink clothes and scented pink paper. Elle even takes her change a step further, by proving herself worthy to society in a very important court case. Elle is able to take charge and evidently win her case, thus helping an innocent person. Elle finds thrill in this new person she has created within herself and is glad she did it. She feels as if she is finally more than what society had previously seen her as and is proud that she was the one who was able to make that change for herself. Hester Prynne from Hawthorne s, The Scarlet Letter, is marginalized by society for having committed a sin. She too is given a stereotype by those around her, similar to Elle Woods. The most common victims of anthrax are warm blooded animals, but it can also infect humans. Anthrax spores can be produced in a powdery form for biological warfare. When inhaled by humans, these particles cause respiratory failure and death within a week. Because anthraxis considered to be a potential agent for use in biological warfare, the Department of Defense (DOD), in 1998, announced it would begin a systematic vaccination of all U.S. militarypersonnel. Specifically, the document will focus on General Motors (GM), and the innovation of one of their manufacturing facilities who used ABC to predict energy usage in the manufacturing of automobiles. The study yielded a successful ABC predictive energy model which provided a structure for competitive advantage for the corporation. INTRODUCTION General Motors (GM) is one of the most renowned automakers in the world. GM is well known for their streamlined assembly processes which saves money and time in the production of cars. A study was conducted at one of GM s vehicle assembly plants as part of a research project to examine how the ABC model provides value. To do this, it first briefly states ways in which the term sustainable energy has been interpreted by various bodies and individuals and ways in which people seek to identify an energy source which is truly sustainable. This essay seeks to point out the flaw in classifying all renewable sources of energy as being sustainable. It will achieve this by comparing two energy related projects, proving how sustainable a non renewable source can be and vice versa. Lastly, it will prove ways in which different people s misconceptions can affect further progress with these energy related projects. A number of suitable definitions of sustainable energy run through this essay. Sustainable Energy has been defined as; A living harmony between the equitable availability of energy services to all people and the preservation of the earth for future generations (Tester, Drake, Driscoll, Golay, Peters, 2005). This from my own point of view is the most accurate definition by far. Pointedly, it is in contrast with a number of definitions; for example this one by Denzil Walton stating that; Sustainable energy is regarded as the system of producing, transporting, distributing and consuming energy in a way that promotes a reduction in the rate of consumption of non renewable resources which lead to environmental degradation while providing at socially ... • 30. Dna And The Creation And Proper Functioning Of Every... DNA is like the blueprint for the creation and proper functioning of every living organism. Organisms can sometimes be divided into prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Examples of prokaryotes and eukaryotes include bacteria and humans, respectively. These organisms must possess a method of replicating DNA, so a copy is provided for each cell that divides. Each cell s responsibility is coordinated by the piece of DNAand thus, makes it a very valuable part of the cell and organism. So what are the methods of replicating DNA in eukaryotes and prokaryotes? DNA replicationin prokaryotes consists of several enzymes and proteins which are responsible for different tasks, but together make the process seem effortless. DNA replication in eukaryotes is similar, but more complicated given that eukaryotic chromosomes are linear, possess more than one origin, and have nucleosome structures which need to be replicated. Regardless, a technique named PCR, developed by Kary Mullis, has the ability to produce exponentially large amounts of a specific piece of DNA from trace amounts of template DNA (Bio Rad). PCR has the ability to replicate DNA in eukaryotic cells. Prokaryotic replication and PCR both replicate DNA, so the similarities are apparent in terms of methods, but there also appears to be subtle differences concerning the enzymes and proteins utilized during each process. As stated previously, similarities are clearly apparent between the prokaryotic replication and PCR. Before ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The stories that are contained in the four Gospels are those that share Christ s doctrine as well as the history of the Savior. However, to say that the Gospel stories and doctrine cannot be applied to the modern reader would be incorrect. One of these Gospels, John, contains a particularly important message for both the historical and modern reader. In John 10, a variety of integral stories and important doctrine is outlined. In John 10, both the story of the Good Shepherd and Christ s interactions with the Jewish leaders give insight to the historical reference and meaning of the doctrine in a modern setting. John 10 is a very interesting and important block of scripture. It covers the idea of Christ as the Good Shepherd. He states in John 10:11, I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. This presents one of the main ideas of John 10, which is that Christ is the leader of His sheep, which are His people. He declares that the good shepherd will die for his flock, which is exactly what Christ does. He also defends his statements from the Jewish leaders, as they want to stone him for uttering such blasphemy , according to Blair G. VanDyke.
