2. Global Brigades is the world’s largest student-led global health and sustainable
development organization. As a secular, international nonprofit organization, we
mobilize student volunteers and professionals to empower communities in
developing countries with programs that improve quality of life and environment,
while respecting local culture. Students and professionals empower communities in
Honduras, Panama and Ghana.
Between 2009 and 2010, more than 4,000 volunteers from over 100 GB university
chapters in the U.S., Canada, U.K., and Ireland traveled to provide health and
economic development solutions to more than 50,000 beneficiaries through
Honduras, Panama and Ghana.

3. Global Brigades offers 9 programs, some in more countries than others.

4. Global Brigades focuses on countries where family members survive on less than $2
per day and where medical and economic needs are severely neglected and
resources for basic services are low (most health issues are related to lack of basic
services – clean water and public health infrastructure).
Honduras, Panama and Ghana were selected based on their high need for services in
their rural areas, strong on-the ground partnerships for sustainability, accessibility to
logistical needs (for transporting groups, providing lodging and food), and safety.
Through on-the ground full-time staff in Honduras, Panama, and Ghana, Global
Brigades is able to work with communities to ensure sustainable work and
perpetuate on-going services in-between brigades.

5. Each program was selected for each country based on needs and student volunteer
base.

6. Global Brigades holistic model of develop incorporates the following programs in
Honduras.

7. As the second poorest country in the western hemisphere, Honduras’ people have
very limited access to healthcare and basic resources. Many health issues are related
to clean water access and public health infrastructure. Families also have limited
access to any type of small loans.

9. Education- example Joyas- woman from the community took out a loan to send her
daughter to get a license to become a teacher. As a result, the daughter returned to
the community to teach after obtaining her license.
Health and Hygiene- loans for Public Health projects can be obtained through the
Caja Rural

10. Global Brigades supports a full-time staff in-country to coordinate brigades and
measure community impact. Each brigade will have a minimum of two dedicated
team members and a dedicated security officer throughout their time in Honduras to
ensure project success, coordinate logistics and provide a safe brigade environment.

11. The first day you will be transported to the lodging facility where you will be staying
for the week. Volunteers stay in a lodging facility that has a dormitory-type layout.
The facilities are 1-3 hours away from the community that Water Brigades will work
in and have 24 hour staff and security on site. There are three locations where
volunteers could stay: Nuevo Paraiso, Posada Azul, Rapaco.
[ Actual lodging facility will most likely not be determined until a week or two before
a brigade, due to logistics of arranging volunteers and frequent changing volunteer
numbers up to the actual brigade. ]
