ALTERNATIVE ORPHAN FAMILY
SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM THROUGH
SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOODS
Background:
Many orphans in Bangladesh have significantly and adversely been
affected by various factors such as limited access to quality healthcare,
education, recreation, livelihood etc. For the low standard of living and
the precarious environmental and economic situation, orphans are
particularly susceptible to the false promises of human traffickers,
being forced into child labour or being sexually exploited.
The “Alternative Orphan Family Sponsorship through Sustainable
Livelihoods” project is developed for supporting orphan families with an
integrated approach instead of addressing one to one sponsorship
program. Through the one to one sponsorship program, we focused only
the development of a particular orphan child who was under the
sponsorship program, but this alternative intervention is covering all
children in a family. As a socially responsive faith-based organization,
we do not create any discrimination through our program interventions in
any way. For this reason, we have developed a non-discriminatory
project to help the orphans and their families generate income.
This project addresses the livelihood needs of the most vulnerable
orphan families through business development, assists them in protecting
their children with continue education, maintain their family with dignity
and create quality access to line departments through voice raise
platform and supports communities to implement community led total
sanitation (CLTS). The project helps to reduce poverty and ensure child
rights and protection as per Government of Bangladesh’s (GoB) national
policy and Millennium Development Goal.
Further, this project consulted with Local Government Institutions
(LGIs), elites and administrations, specifically the line department
officers. The project has established strong relations with the govt. line
departments who have play an important role in delivering technical
training for skill development, which is aimed at supporting the
improvement of the orphan livelihood with social dignity.

Innovation of the project:
The project is developed for supporting orphan families with an
integrated approach instead of addressing one to one sponsorship
program. IRB normal sponsorship program support any orphan up to 18
years, normally one orphan get support 8-10 years monthly basis @
€26. So within the 10 years total cost is (26* 12*10 years) = € 3120.
But designed project cost will be (26*12*4 Years) = € 1248.00 per
sponsor family. So through this integrated approach we minimize program
cost and assume better result which contribute to increase family income
and establishes social dignity of the orphan and their families.
Innovation point of view project practicing child to child community
development for ensuring child protection through child club, widow
cooperative apex body for sustainable development through social
enterprise and community participation for address new orphan families
