New and improving technologies such as solar, wind, wave and most importantly batteries are changing the way we think about the delivery and storage of electricity. One of these developments is the microgrid, which is essentially a small scale power grid that can operate independently (in ‘island mode’) or connect with the main electrical grid – think of a small suburb, or estate, that shares electricity and the cost of the infrastructure. A microgrid needs to control the flow of electricity of low or medium voltage, but does not need connection to a centralised generation or transmission network. Western Power has trialled the world’s first microgrid project that combines wave energy, solar (photovoltaic) energy, a desalination plant, and energy storage that connects to our large electricity network.
Thair demonstrates extensive engineering experience focused on power systems planning and real-time operation. This includes experience in load, generation and microgrids grid connection, renewable energies, transmission networks planning and stability. This experience is supported by his academic research at the University of Tasmania and Edith Cowan University, including invitation to review international journals and conferences in the field of Energy Systems and Artificial Intelligence. Thair has previously held roles with Canegie Wave Energy and Deng Kai.
Response to msedcl demands the cumulative capacity to be allowed at a particular distribution transformer shall not exceed 15% of the

We hope the renewable energy proposals on the table, on completion, will assist Solomon Power to reduce the price of electricity.This includes the recent commisioning of the 1MW Hendeson solar farm, 150kW Buala mini-Hydro and upgrade to he Honiara and Lungga power stations.

He has held senior management roles while working for electricity distribution, transmission and generation utilities. Uganda has the third largest off-grid solar market in the world, and the last two years realized a 25% growth rate in the off-grid solar industry for Uganda. Off-grid solar solutions clearly contribute to improving access to power, but how can it be recognized and supported as a mainstream solution to improving electrification, especially in the new Energy Policy?
A growing number of utilities are calling for reform or abolition of net metering. They call it a “free ride” to use utility wires and not pay for the service. IREC, along with other non-profits and the solar industry, know net metering can be fair and balanced. It provides benefits that outweigh utility costs in most cases, particularly by deferring new utility construction. It's a hot button topic. Feasibility Study on Battery Energy Storage System for Mini gridijtsrd
Mini grids defined as a set of electricity generators and battery energy storage system is connected between the load side and the source side. A key feature of mini grids is that they can operate autonomously with no connection to a centralized grid. Gaw Cho village, Sagaing Division, Myanmar is selected because of the higher potential of solar energy. This paper presents the unbalance condition between the load side and the source side because the solar energy is changing under weather condition. Diesel generator is used as a backup system for this proposed area but the operation of the fuel cost increased for long term period. Here, battery energy storage system is used as a secondary supplier to balance between them. This paper focus on to used HOMER software for pointing out the result outcome not be oversizing the system requirement. Using real time data, storage characteristics and HOMER simulations, optimal sizing for both approaches were established. A well design min grid offered available tool for the rural electrification system. Masdar’s operational expertise and its extensive knowledge of renewable energy and clean technologies make us the ideal choice for project management consulting services, for both unconventional and bespoke projects. A further asset is our access to a large international network of former clients, partners, suppliers, governments and other related organizations. In May 2015 Masdar successfully inaugurated the LaKaRo Solar Fuel Saving Project. The Project consists of 3 x solar PV/diesel hybrid plants with fuel saver technology on the islands of Lakeba, Kadavu and Rotuma. One year later, in May 2016, Masdar inaugurated the Palau Solar Penetration and Water Access project consisting of 2 x Solar PV/diesel hybrid plants (among other project components) on the outer islands of Peleliu and Angaur. Both were funded under the US$50 million UAE Pacific Partnership Fund consisting of projects in 11 of the sovereign South Pacific Island countries. The case studies will focus on the successes and technical challenges faced during the implementation of the Fiji and Palau projects. With the Fiji project now 1 year operational and the Palau just recently connected, both offer unique insights into high renewable energy penetrating grids and the challenges of seamlessly integrating Solar PV, low-load diesel generators and fuel saver technology.

His expertise in the field include solar photovoltaics, wind, water treatment and desalination, renewable/diesel hybrid power plants and renewable energy with battery storage. The Smart Villages workshop was organised in Pakistan as continuation of the regional engagement in South Asia. The Pakistan workshop aimed to glean insights from the country’s experience of off-grid energy provision to remote rural communities through the deployment of micro-grids. In particular the workshop aimed to tease out the enabling framework conditions that have been vital for the deployment of micro-grids in remote areas of the country. It is hoped that the workshop provided relevant insights to other countries in South Asia and globally that seek to establish frameworks supporting the growth of micro-grids.
The workshop will address the following main questions:
o What are the challenges encountered in deploying micro-grids in Pakistan and how have they been overcome?
o What framework conditions have acted as enablers or have hindered the success of micro-grids in Pakistan?
o How have these framework conditions evolved and what are the lessons for other regions that seek to deploy micro-grids?
o How can these framework conditions enable the productive use of energy to improve livelihoods, health and education outcomes?

Although the Hawaiian Islands are blessed with an abundance of renewable energy sources including excellent solar and wind resources, and have the nation’s most aggressive renewable energy standards, the state still rely heavily on fossil fuels for electricity generation. With isolated (unconnected) island grids and sparse systems on some islands, integration of the intermittent renewable generation systems has been challenging. The Hawaii Natural Energy Institute (HNEI) at the University of Hawaii has initiated an integrated effort involving modeling, testing, and demonstration to identify and validate pathways to higher renewable integration. In this talk, I will discuss the analysis being used to identify strategic paths forward and will describe several projects currently underway including the Maui Smart Grid Demonstration Project, the Smart Grid Inverter Project and several grid-scale battery energy storage projects.
Richard Rocheleau (PhD, Chemical Engineering, University of DE), has over 35 years of experience in renewable energy, with an emphasis in the areas of photovoltaics, hydrogen fuel cells, and energy systems. Dr. Rocheleau joined the faculty of the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute at the University of Hawaii in 1988 and was appointed Director in 2000. Under his direction, the Institute is leading the development of public‐private partnerships focused on the development, testing and integration of alternative energy technologies into the electrical grid. HNEI has major funding from the US Department of Energy and the Office of Naval Research. Dr. Rocheleau was also successful in positioning the Institute to receive a portion of the ‘barrel tax’, established by the Hawaii State Legislature supporting studies for integration of renewable energy technologies into the grid intended to assist the state to meet its aggressive renewable energy portfolio goals.

1. Micro-grids: The way forward for Indian energy sector!
A black-out lasting for 2 days in the heart of the Indian capital due to a transmission
causality in a place about 150km away from it. Few state governments & UTs getting
paid for only 65% of the energy they buy from generators, resulting in guaranteed
losses of SEBs. The last mile connectivity hurdles of the power distribution networks
rendering the valuable hours of our farfetched villages less productive. The industrial
belt in Tamil Nadu reaping Rs.150 crore revenue loss every day, on account of just
85MW out of the 1100MW agreement reaching the borders of the state. A 20 year old
project for building a nuclear plant being with-held from operating on accounts of the
scare of potential environmental hazards. This is precisely the background against
which the idea of giving importance to renewable & micro-grid is based on.
Now without much ado, if we have to articulate the advantages that a micro-grid could bestow, it would
be to:
• Reduce of the 27% loss in AT&C for India which is 8% globally
• Reduce energy conversion loss of 5%: Light to light instead of light-electron-light
• Reduce peak power consumption by 11%
• Responsible usage of power for small groups & ensure productive usage of electricity
• Integrate citizen services, governance
• Last-mile connectivity & dependable source of energy for local community
• Least time taken to setup a power source for a community
Despite offering so many advantages, the idea of micro-grid & solar still lurks in the dark owing to the
combined effect of ignorance, funding hurdles and of course lack of will. The foulest vice of renewable is
that of its variability in output & undependability. It’s the same variability that would reduce the
utilization factor of transmission system to the choice of seasons and unavailability of benchmarks for
financial institutes to evaluate projects. Eg. The same solar potential within the same district at 2 places
with 35km of spatial separation & 2 different technologies might give glaring differences in yield of up to
30%! The transmission network which would carry the solar or wind power as and when it is bestowed
by nature would otherwise be dead as a door-nail. Add to the inherent uncertainty of renewable, the
direction & clarity of policies revolving around RECs, payment mechanisms, nose-diving solar energy
prices and lack of benchmarking standards for financial institutions make the understanding of
renewable & micro-grid market all the more murky.
To unwind the juggernaut, each characteristic of the renewable & micro-grid will have to be understood
separately at first, and collectively next.
2. • Variability in production: The grid code of handling 30% fluctuation for wind, and probably a
similar code for solar in the future, simply shifts the brunt of nature from empty transmission
lines onto project developers who are in to reap profits. India has about 37GW or roughly 20%
of its power from hydro-power, and only the Tehri dam is planned for large scale storage. The
untapped potential for more hydel projects could also be the best avenues for storing electricity
at the grid level. Alongside hydro, the other centralized storage systems would account for
absorbing the shocks of variable production from micro-grids and ensuring greater utilization of
transmission lines.
• Variability in prediction: Renewable energy installations in UMPP scale could be given a
mandate to follow a particular load cycle. This would stabilize the flow of electricity into the
grid, give time for grid managers to ensure power quality at the macro-level & stable revenue
stream evaluation for the banks.

• Incentives/policy to migrate to renewable: The key barriers to adopt wind or solar at the micro-
level are likely the high initial capital investment, storage requirement to reign in variability, lack
of knowledge on wind & solar, optimism of cheaper grid electricity being available at sometime
in the future, lower cost of heavily subsidized main grid power and lack of will-power despite
incentives from utilities. Most of the policies that serve as incentives for distributed generation
are transitory in nature, i.e. the quantum of incentives is fixed only over a certain period of
years. Eg. REC guidelines, FiTs for domestic rooftop PV installers, etc. Though the transitory
incentives in actual reflect the spiraling price trend of solar & wind, they actually implicate some
undesirable signals to the industry:
