Breaches in patient confidentiality occur more often than we’d like. In
fact, according to one study, “Following 7138 days and 33157 h of
observation, we found an estimated Frequency Index of one breach per
62.5 h. As regards the typology of the observed breaches, the most
frequent (54,6 %) were related to the consultation and/or disclosure of
clinical and/or personal data to medical personnel not involved in the
patient’s clinical care, as well as people external to the hospital” (Beltran-
Aroca, C. 2016). It’s important that all clinicians understand that just
because they belong to an organization that is directly responsible for the
care of a patient does not entitle them to access that information. This
presentation looks at one particular hospital in California and makes
recommendations regarding improving patient privacy policy.
 It’s been reported by Fox News that over 120 medical professionals
looked at celebrity patient’s records been 2004-2006 (Fox News 2008).
This is a severe ethical violation that threatens the integrity of any
organization.
 Have staff meetings and training on patient confidentiality
 Limit access to patient records
 Draft team working agreements
I believe the most important thing managers can do is to raise awareness of patient privacy and the consequences
of violating privacy policies. I also believe that firmness and toughness has its place in management if done
correctly. When I enlisted in the army, the very first thing they had us do was sit in a room where a sergeant
addressed why it’s important to reveal our entire medical history and described the consequences of lying. At the
time, I left out a minor procedure I had done several years back, and the idea of being caught terrified me. From
that moment, I became very transparent about everything in terms of legal documents. I believe healthcare
professionals need to be educated about the importance of maintaining patient privacy, and even if they work for
an organization overseeing the care of a patient, that does not entitle them to access their information. Healthcare
professionals need to know that upper level management does have knowledge about who is accessing data, what
data is being a accessed, and what are repercussions for improper access to data. I genuinely that those who were
discovered to be accessing celebrity data either did not realize that they organization can monitor them or felt that
being part of the organization on its own gave them the right to access the data. Organizations must also take
considerable measure to limit access to only individuals who are involved in the patient care. There is no reason
for departments to have access to patients in different departments. Lastly, managers must draft working
agreement contracts and have employees sign that they acknowledge their boundaries when it comes to accessing
patient records and that they will take full responsibility of repercussions.
 That’s why meetings and agreement contracts are effective. As one
article points out, “Where there is no Law, There is no sin. The Team
Agreement is not a law or set of rules, just an understanding of the
acceptable behaviors within an association or a team” (Business
Analyst. 2018).

  • 2. Breaches in patient confidentiality occur more often than we’d like. In fact, according to one study, “Following 7138 days and 33157 h of observation, we found an estimated Frequency Index of one breach per 62.5 h. As regards the typology of the observed breaches, the most frequent (54,6 %) were related to the consultation and/or disclosure of clinical and/or personal data to medical personnel not involved in the patient’s clinical care, as well as people external to the hospital” (Beltran- Aroca, C. 2016). It’s important that all clinicians understand that just because they belong to an organization that is directly responsible for the care of a patient does not entitle them to access that information. This presentation looks at one particular hospital in California and makes recommendations regarding improving patient privacy policy.
  • 3.  It’s been reported by Fox News that over 120 medical professionals looked at celebrity patient’s records been 2004-2006 (Fox News 2008). This is a severe ethical violation that threatens the integrity of any organization.

  • 5. I believe the most important thing managers can do is to raise awareness of patient privacy and the consequences of violating privacy policies. I also believe that firmness and toughness has its place in management if done correctly. When I enlisted in the army, the very first thing they had us do was sit in a room where a sergeant addressed why it’s important to reveal our entire medical history and described the consequences of lying. At the time, I left out a minor procedure I had done several years back, and the idea of being caught terrified me. From that moment, I became very transparent about everything in terms of legal documents. I believe healthcare professionals need to be educated about the importance of maintaining patient privacy, and even if they work for an organization overseeing the care of a patient, that does not entitle them to access their information. Healthcare professionals need to know that upper level management does have knowledge about who is accessing data, what data is being a accessed, and what are repercussions for improper access to data. I genuinely that those who were discovered to be accessing celebrity data either did not realize that they organization can monitor them or felt that being part of the organization on its own gave them the right to access the data. Organizations must also take considerable measure to limit access to only individuals who are involved in the patient care. There is no reason for departments to have access to patients in different departments. Lastly, managers must draft working agreement contracts and have employees sign that they acknowledge their boundaries when it comes to accessing patient records and that they will take full responsibility of repercussions.
  • 6.  That’s why meetings and agreement contracts are effective. As one article points out, “Where there is no Law, There is no sin. The Team Agreement is not a law or set of rules, just an understanding of the acceptable behaviors within an association or a team” (Business Analyst. 2018).
