2. A Patient’s Confidentiality and Healthcare
Confidentiality is protecting a person’s personal information
With a patient it would be their medical file and their personal information
This information should be kept between the patient and his doctor or healthcare
Provider. It is as stated “confidentiality, privacy, and security of computerized and
paper-based clinical and administrative are huge concerns” (Wolper, 2011)
It is up to the healthcare provider to make sure that there are measures in place to
keep these files safe.
There should be no transfer of information with out prior consent from the patient.
This is usually done through a written release signed by the patient, giving his
doctor permission to do so
3. Making good business decisions
In healthcare as in any business using good sound moral judgement is
necessary to avoid any future problems.
With so many staff being able to access a patient’s files, the healthcare
provider or organization needs to have a program in place to insure that
the patient’s confidentiality is not breached. Which is what happened in
the article “Over 120 UCLA Hospital Staff Saw Celebrity Health
Records.” this was a cost to the hospital not just financially but it also
hurt their reputation.
4. Training a manager could put into place to avoid this situation
The manager should make sure that all staff working in the facility should go through a
training period. This training should emphasize the use of the laws, rules and regulations of
patient protection rights.
It should include training of computer usage, the manager should issue individual
passwords of those who need to have access to patient information. Let these people know
this done so that careful monitoring of their activities of the patients information is being
done for the right purposes which it to provide healthcare to the patient.
Have he trainees sign a document that they understand the training they received and what
the ramifications of their action can cause should they break and organizational rules, or
laws like the HIPAA laws it they do not abide by the training policies that just received.
5. Important patient information that should not
be breached
The trainees should be made aware that a patient’s name, birth
date, social security, his sex, address, phone number, insurance,
bank information, medical records, or contact persons incase of
an emergency are accessed with prior authorization from the
patient or upper management. These are to be kept in the
upmost security to protect the patient, from thing like scandals
as with the UCLA Hospital
6. Training on confidentiality can be effective for the
employees
When employees in any business under where they are with in an organization and
understand the goals, rules and regulation set for them, they are more likely to be
happy, follow the rules, and have less conflicts.
Employees realizing what the outcome of any miss use of or breaching a patients
records could cost them are less like likely to do so. Just knowing that hey are being
consistently monitored makes them aware that they not going to be able to break any
of the rules. This is good for both the employee and the company as it will help
everyone to stay in compliance with what the HIPAA laws pertain to and save
money time and confusion for everyone concerned.
