2.  Protected Health information: Protected health
information is information of a patients who is
in a health system for previous care and needs.
Their information is protected by law and
should be private from anyone besides the
health facilities qualified health professional
who have consent on file to keep patients
information private. Some examples are
patients demographics, care, and treatments
administered.

3.  Patient privacy Is very important because it
protects patients information from anyone
other than health professionals who have not
been consented to know their information.
HIPAA is the law that protect these patients
information.

4.  What is HIPAA?
 HIPAA stands for health information Portability and
accountability act which was established in 1996
 “Provides the ability to transfer and continue health
insurance coverage for millions of American workers
and their families when they change or lose their jobs;
 •Reduces health care fraud and abuse;
 •Mandates industry-wide standards for health care
information on electronic billing and other processes;
and
 •Requires the protection and confidential handling of
protected health information” (dhcs.ca.gov)

5.  “The HIPAA Privacy regulations require health
care providers and organizations, as well as
their business associates, develop and follow
procedures that ensure the confidentiality and
security of protected health information (PHI)
when it is transferred, received, handled, or
shared”(dhcs.ca.gov).

6.  Failure to comply with HIPAA rules and
regulations will definitely go from you losing
your job being the minimum unto federal time
in prison and fines.
 Violations are very strict because violations of
HIPAA is risking someone life and livelihood
with humiliation.

7. WE CAN: WE CANNOT
 We can access Patients
information as it relates to
the job that calls for it.
 When done with the use
of the computer log out
the computer as it help for
any accessible material
that can be seen
 Shred any patient
information that has been
printed or not needed
anymore.
 Discuss patient
information with
anyone
 Email documents
 Discuss patients
information with
consent from patient

8.  Patients’ demographics
-name, dob, ssn, etc
 Patients Treatment
-labs, care, Rx, etc
 Patients Insurance
Are Always protected and needs to have consent
to get access to the information by the patient.
