Metamorphism is the process by which rocks are changed physically and chemically due to heat, pressure, and fluids acting on them at depth within the Earth. There are two main types of metamorphism: contact metamorphism, which occurs near intrusions of magma, and regional metamorphism, which occurs over large areas due to pressure between tectonic plates. Metamorphic rocks like slate, marble, and quartzite form and have different mineral assemblages depending on the temperature and pressure conditions during metamorphism. Metamorphic rocks have various commercial and construction uses.

commonly, some combination of these factors.

thermal metamorphism) happens when
rock is heated up by an intrusion of

that occurs over broad areas of the crust. It
occurs when two faults push against each
other so hard creating immense
PRESSURE resulting into metamorphic
rocks.

7. Extreme heat and pressure change the original
state of an existing rock. They also change
chemical composition and physical structure of
existing rocks. Combinations of minerals in rocks
are stable only over specific ranges of pressure
and temperature. At pressure and temperature not
within the ranges, the minerals form a different
combinations call mineral assemblages (Kasten
2012, 290-291).
