2. MENTALISM
• Mentalism refers to those branches of study that concentrate on perception
and thoughts processes.
• For example: mental imagery, consciousness etc.
3. MENTALISM THEORY
• Noam Chomsky gave the theory of mentalism.
• Chomsky believes that no conditioning process is necessary for language
learning.
• Thus he presented his theory of language learning called mentalism.
• It is based on cognitive learning.
4. COGNITIVE LEARNING
• By cognitive learning Chomsky means the ways in which child relates child
relates new events and new items of knowledge to the events already present
in his mind.
• This leads Chomsky to say that every child is born with intrinsic ability of
language learning.
• A child brings some knowledge of structure and principle with him.
5. MENTALISM APPROACH
• The mind of the child is not a blank slate.. Every child has innate capacity.
• Language is not a behaviour like other behaviours But a specific mental
process.
•
6. PRINCIPLE OF MENTALISM
• The principle of mentalism states that the universe is akin to a mental
projection.
• The is like manifestation 101, which is all about using your thoughts to
shape your reality.
• For anything to be, a thought must precede it.
7. GOALS OF MENTALISM THEORY
• The mentalism learning theory emphasizes the role of the mind in language
acquisition by arguing that humans are born with an innate and biological
capacity to learn languages.
• This theory was spearheaded by Noam Chomsky, and arose in response to
B.F. Skinner’s radical behaviorism
