Feeding plate for a newborn with Cleft Palate.pptxSatvikaPrasad
A feeding plate is a prosthetic device used for newborns with a cleft palate to assist in feeding and improve nutrition intake. From a prosthodontic perspective, this plate acts as a barrier between the oral and nasal cavities, facilitating effective sucking and swallowing by providing a more normal anatomical structure. It helps to prevent milk from entering the nasal passage, thereby reducing the risk of aspiration and enhancing the infant's ability to feed efficiently. The feeding plate also aids in the development of the oral muscles and can contribute to better growth and weight gain. Its custom fabrication and proper fitting by a prosthodontist are crucial for ensuring comfort and functionality, as well as for minimizing potential complications. Early intervention with a feeding plate can significantly improve the quality of life for both the infant and the parents.

5. Background
Mental health contributes to all aspects of life and has both
material and immaterial, or intrinsic, values: for the individual,
society, and economy.
Mental health has a reciprocal relationship with the well-being
and productivity of an individual.
arafatdmc62@gmail.com; 01713272917
6. Background
The costs of poor mental health have been estimated to
account for between 3-4% of GDP in developed countries
Untreated mental health problems, can have profound
longstanding social and economic consequences.
These compromise the quality of life and economic prosperity,
and the implementation of mental health promotion (MHP)
programs is imperative
arafatdmc62@gmail.com; 01713272917
7. Health
‘‘a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-
being and not merely the absence of disease, or
infirmity’’
Mental health is clearly an integral part of health and
there is no health without mental health
arafatdmc62@gmail.com; 01713272917
9. Mental Health
‘‘not just the absence of mental disorder’’ but ‘‘as a state
of well-being in which
every individual realizes his or her own potential, can
cope with the normal stresses of life,
can work productively and fruitfully, and
is able to make a contribution to her or his
community’’
arafatdmc62@gmail.com; 01713272917
10. Mental Illness
‘‘term that refers collectively to all diagnosable mental
disorders’’ that are ‘‘health conditions that are
characterized by alterations in thinking, mood, or
behavior (or some combination thereof) associated with
distress and/or impaired functioning’’

economic determinants on mental health and mental illness

influencing the conditions that create positive mental health

concern and responsibility

15. Melbourne Charter in 2008
effective MHP builds on cross-sectoral collaboration with non-
health sectors, including education, housing, employment and
industry, transport, arts, sports, urban planning and justice.
It was stressed that the role of the health sector must move in a
health promotion direction, beyond its responsibility for
providing clinical and curative services.
Mental health promotion can be seen as an important new goal
for public mental health as because the absence of mental illness
does not necessarily imply the presence of flourishing mental
health arafatdmc62@gmail.com; 01713272917
16. Mental Health Promotion (MHP)
“the creation of living conditions and environments that
support mental health and allow people to adopt and
maintain healthy lifestyles”.
arafatdmc62@gmail.com; 01713272917
17. Promotion & Prevention
Overlaps, but distinct; emphasis in mental health promotion is
on positive mental health and prevention emphasize on the
causes of disease.
Prevention focuses on the causes of risk factors to avoid
illness, whereas promotion focuses on health.
The ideals of health promotion are based on ‘what causes good
health?’ and ‘what factors or determinants are linked to health
and which of these are modifiable?’, and ‘how are they
modifiable?’
This salutogenic approach focuses on factors that support
health and well-being, rather than disease.
arafatdmc62@gmail.com; 01713272917
19. Public Mental Health
The field of public mental health approaches mental health
targets at the population level focuses on enabling and
achieving positive mental health.
It is not just about the occurrence and prevention of mental
disorders in the population, but also includes the
promotion of mental health and wellbeing.
arafatdmc62@gmail.com; 01713272917
20. Public Mental Health
This multidisciplinary area of practice aims to enhance
well-being and quality of life for individuals, communities
and society in general.
Promoting mental health is an integral part of public health
and public health must focus on promoting mental health by
addressing the emotional, social, and psychological well-being
of the population .

Promotion
24. Warning
Unfortunately, health professionals and health planners are
often too preoccupied with the immediate problems of
those who have a disease than those who are “well”.
Separate strategies from treatment are needed for mental
health promotion and prevention of mental illnesses
Psychiatrists are not usually accustomed to these concepts
and approaches of mental health promotion
25. Mental Health Promotion Interventions
universal interventions focusing the whole population;
selected interventions
focusing the subgroups with significant risks; and
indicated intervention focusing high-risk individuals;
according to the range of target population, available resources
and intervening limitations .
arafatdmc62@gmail.com; 01713272917
26. International Experiences
In New Zealand, nationwide MHP campaign, including
education and training, providing evidence that
awareness among the general public, as well as
attitudes and behaviors towards people with experience
of mental illness.
In a multisite European study (The European Early
Promotion Project), training was offered to a
quasiexperimental group of primary health care
professionals.
27. Potential Areas
It is widely recognized that promoting mental health and
addressing mental ill health can be endeavored at different
levels, taking into consideration individual, family, community
and social determinants of mental health, and strengthening
protective factors while reducing risk factors.
At a community and group level, the degree of knowledge and
understanding about the nature of mental health and mental
illness has been identified as a key element for changing health
policies and practices.
28. Potential Areas
Human settings such as schools, family (parenting) and work
places are considered crucial for MHP education.
In schools in particular, an inclusive intervention program can
increase social competencies, improve resilience and reduce
bullying, anxiety and depressive symptoms.
In addition, promoting mental health in children, adolescents
and parent populations may improve their mental health through
the development of particular skills relevant to each group
29. Challenges of mental health promotion
Low sensitivity of in policy making
Low literacy of people on mental health
Low intro-sectoral coordination and inter-sectoral cooperation
Inadequate Mental health programs
Poor quality and in consistency in taking care of chronic diseases
Poor structure, system process, and resources of mental health
system
arafatdmc62@gmail.com; 01713272917
30. Challenges for Psychiatrists
The greatest importance for mental health care is not only
reduce mental illness, but also to work actively to promote
the mental health
The three kinds of interventions of promotion, prevention, and
treatment are interrelated and complementary; however, they are
somewhat different from one another and psychiatrists also need to
be competent.
In addition to the treatment, mental health promotion and
prevention of illnesses have become principal challenges for
psychiatrists
arafatdmc62@gmail.com; 01713272917
31. Conclusion
The field of mental health promotion has acquired world-
wide recognition and new initiatives are being undertaken
and new research is emerging globally.
It’s the time to concentrate appropriately on the issue to
improve the mental health as well as to reduce the personal,
social and global burden of mental illness.
arafatdmc62@gmail.com; 01713272917
32. Take Home Message
Poor mental health has significant role in development
Mental Health & Mental Illness can co-exist
Mental health promotion deals with the healthy people
School can be a significant area for MHP
Mental Health Literacy is a very important area to address
Psychiatrist are responsible not only for the treatment of
mental illness but also for prevention and promotion of mental
health
