Aside from the fear of contracting the virus, many people also worried about the crisis negatively affecting their day to day lives. One such situation that has come to pass for many is unemployment as a result of the quarantine. The World Health Organization encouraged people to pay increased attention to both their physical and mental health, since the sudden adjustments could create a significant impact on a person's health.
In mid-July of 2020, the KFF Tracking poll reported that 53 percent of adults in the United States reported suffering negative impacts from the crisis, particularly as a result of stress. Sleeping and eating difficulties represent the majority of reported symptoms. People with chronic conditions generally suffered worsened states due to worry. There has also been a notable increase in alcohol consumption and substance use.

Effective and low-cost treatments are available but there is a treatment gap of over 75% in many low- and middle-income countries. Without adequate investment in mental health services and supports, individuals and societies cannot reach their full potential.

Dr Margaret Chan, the WHO Director-General, described the new Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan 2013–2020 as a landmark achievement: it focuses international attention on a long-neglected problem and is firmly rooted in the principles of human rights. The action plan calls for changes. It calls for a change in the attitudes that perpetuate stigma and discrimination that have isolated people since ancient times, and it calls for an expansion of services in order to promote greater efficiency in the use of resources.
- 7. Key facts One in six people are aged 10–19 years. Mental health conditions account for 16% of the global burden of disease and injury in people aged 10–19 years. Half of all mental health conditions start by 14 years of age but most cases are undetected and untreated. Globally, depression is one of the leading causes of illness and disability among adolescents. Suicide is the third leading cause of death in 15–19 year olds. The consequences of not addressing adolescent mental health conditions extend to adulthood, impairing both physical and mental health and limiting opportunities to lead fulfilling lives as adults. Mental health promotion and prevention are key to helping adolescents thrive.
- 8. Adolescence is a crucial period for developing and maintaining social and emotional habits important for mental well-being. These include adopting healthy sleep patterns; taking regular exercise; developing coping, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills; and learning to manage emotions. Supportive environments in the family, at school, and in the wider community are also important.
- 9. Worldwide, it is estimated that 10–20% of adolescents experience mental health conditions, yet these remain underdiagnosed and undertreated Emotional disorders Emotional disorders commonly emerge during adolescence. In addition to depression or anxiety, adolescents with emotional disorders can also experience excessive irritability, frustration, or anger. Symptoms can overlap across more than one emotional disorder with rapid and unexpected changes in mood and emotional outbursts. Younger adolescents may additionally develop emotion- related physical symptoms such as stomach ache, headache, or nausea.

Mental Health and Psychosocial Support in Emergencies General information related to most emergencies Zara Moloo/IRIN The target group for WHO work on mental health and psychosocial support in emergencies is any population exposed to extreme stressors, such as refugees, internally displaced persons, disaster survivors and terrorism-, war- or genocide-exposed populations. The WHO Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse emphasizes that the number of persons exposed to extreme stressors is large and that exposure to extreme stressors is a risk factor for mental health and social problems. The Department’s work on mental health in emergencies focuses mostly on resource-poor countries, where most populations exposed to natural disasters and war live.
