Knowledge and learning in Islam is a duty on every Muslim It was also related by Anas b. Malik that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Seeking knowledge
Given the dire need for Islamic studies material in schools incorporating the subject in English. Dar-us-salam has endeavored to publish an Islamic Studies series covering all the grades, from grade one through grade twelve.
This series covers all areas of Islamic studies: tafseer, hadeeth, tawheed, fiqh, seerah, and general etiquette relating to different areas and situations. Given the importance of authentic Islamic knowledge, every effort has been made to ensure that the material presented in the series is authentic. Also, given the importance of Arabic Islamic terms, most of the terms are presented in their original Arabic script, along with the transliteration and the translation of their meanings. This also applies to supplications which have to be memorized in their Arabic version. The aim here is to help the reader read the original text and understand its meaning. Each lesson is followed by exercises covering questions about the lesson.
One striking feature in the series is the colorful artwork used in it will certainly appeal to children. This is certainly bound to attract the young readers’ attention, stimulate them, amuse them as well as educate them.
This series aims to acquaint the student with the teachings of Islam in every aspect: beliefs, practices and moral conduct. This series, with its unique features, certainly fills a gap in this area which has long been partially neglected.
Surah Al-Fatiha is one of the most profound Surah's of the Quran. It is the opening Surah of the Quran; the Surah without which Salah is invalid.
This is a quick presentation that will detail all the gems that are hidden in this amazing Surah.

نور الاقتباس في مشكاة وصية النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم لابن عباس
(ابن رجب الحنبلي)
Nurul Iqtibas fi Mishkat Wasiyyah Al-Nabi li Ibn 'Abbas
Prophet Muhammad's (ﷺ) Advice to Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه)
-------
The spiritual and wordly life of a Muslim is focused on Allah. Success in both entails knowing Allah, loving Him, trusting Him and worshipping Him alone. It requires the Muslim to learn his religion, discipline his soul and refine his conduct. The Muslim must have firm faith that everything that happens to him in this life is good for him, that his Lord would never decree anything that would be detrimental and, as such, he is required to be patient and steadfast in the face of adversity and grateful at times of ease.
In this treatise, the author, ibn Rajab sets out to explain the advice the Prophet (SAW) imparted to ibn Abbas (radiyAllahu’anhuma), ‘Safeguard Allah and He will safeguard you. Safeguard Allah and you will find Him in front of you. Know Allah in times of ease and He will know you in times of hardship. When you ask, ask Allah. When you seek aid, turn to Allah. The Pen has dried (after having written) all that will occur…’
It would not be an exaggeration to say that if a Muslim was to understand this hadith and follow it closely, he would be well on his way to fulfilling the goals highlighted above. It is for this reason that ibn al-Jawzi said, ‘I pondered this hadith and it struck me with awe; I was so astounded that I almost became light headed… The prevailing ignorance of this hadith and the lack of understanding thereof is truly distressing!’.
‘Abdu’l-Qadir al-Jilani said, ‘Every believer should make this hadith a mirror to his heart, his axiom, his shelter and his topic of conversation. He should act by it in all times of motion and stillness so that he can be saved in this world and in the Hereafter.’
Imam ibn Rajab al-Hanbali (d.795H) was a scholar praised extensively for his vast knowledge, ascetism and expertise in the Hanbali school of thought as well as in hadith and its related sciences. His writings, gatherings and sermons were full of blessings and he was loved by all. He has written numerous monographs explaining individual hadiths of which this one, a series of which is currently being published by Daar us-Sunnah Publishers.
The translator has added appendices which comprise further explanations to the hadith by Mulla Ali al-Qari, ibn ‘Allan, and ibn ‘Uthaymin

7. Our beloved Prophet صمّل ى ال عليه وسمّلم
made this beautiful du’aa
اللهم اجعل القرآن ربيع قلبي
ّم
“O Allah! Make the Qur’an
the spring of my heart”
yassarnalquran.wordpress.com 7
8. “If indeed the Qur’an was the Spring of our
hearts:
* Our hearts would be in bloom always with
the freshness of nature's newness & nature's
order;
* the green that cools our eyes;
* the fragrances that perfume our scent;
* the fruits that delight our taste & nurture our
bodies; and
* the flowers that remind us of life's bounty
and delicacy.” (Written by Hamza Yusuf in one of his articles)
yassarnalquran.wordpress.com 8
9. So, let us begin with this du’aa:
الله م اجعل القرآن ربيع قلوبنا
ّ
O Allah! Make the Qur’an
the spring of our hearts
Aameen
yassarnalquran.wordpress.com 9
10. 1. Make your intention pure and
sincere.
It should be only to seek the Pleasure
of Allah and none else!
You should NOT have the motive to
seek name, fame or money.
REMEMBER one of the three people
who will become FUEL TO THE FIRE
OF JAHANNUM, according to a hadith,
are the Islamic scholars with bad
intention!
First Thing First!
yassarnalquran.wordpress.com 10
11. 2. After making your intention pure,
make Du’aa to Allah. WITHOUT the help
of Allah you can’t do anything!
BELIEVE in the power of Du’aa.
Allah Knows the secrets of our hearts. If
you sincerely seek Allah’s help, He will
definitely open ways and make things
easy for you.
This is in fact a Promise of Allah and He
never lets His Seekers down!
yassarnalquran.wordpress.com 11
12. 3. Get a good Mus’haf, a good copy of
the Qur’an.
The Arabic Script must be clear and you
must be comfortable reading it.
4. Ensure that you keep this Mus’haf till
the end. Changing the Mus’haf especially
when you are determined to memorize is
a bad idea!
yassarnalquran.wordpress.com 12
13. 5. DO NOT START memorizing without
getting to know the Rules of Recitation
and Pronunciation.
(Remember it is easy to memorize but
difficult to forget. If you memorize an
ayah and later you come to know that it
was a wrong pronunciation then learning
the right pronunciation and the right way
will be difficult)
yassarnalquran.wordpress.com 13
14. YOU NEED TO CHECK YOUR WAY OF
RECITATION & PRONUNCIATION in front
of a scholar who is well-versed in the art
of Qur’anic Recitation.
EVEN WHEN you want to memorize on
your own through audio/internet, you
STILL NEED TO CHECK and cross-check
your way of Recitation. This is very
important!
yassarnalquran.wordpress.com 14
15. 6. Wudoo (ie. Ablution) and complete
purity is necessary as you are going to
memorize the Glorious Book of Allah.
Your ATTITUDE & APPROACH to the
Qur’an must be entirely different from the
approach you adopt towards other
books!
yassarnalquran.wordpress.com 15
16. 7. Place has its own impact on the mind.
Select a comfortable place where there is
no distraction so that you can focus on
memorization with utmost care and
concentration.
yassarnalquran.wordpress.com 16
17. 8. Allot a particular time.
Select a time which suits you the most. It is
better to earmark early morning time as mind is
fresh and receptive. Moreover, the Qur’an
recited during Fajr is ‘witnessed’ by the
Angels!
Don’t do any work other than memorization
during this time.
Strictly and sincerely stick on to your daily time
schedule! This is a secret behind effective
memorization.
yassarnalquran.wordpress.com 17
18. 9. Apportion the daily number of
verses to memorize
You should specify the amount you can bear
daily, be it a given number of verses, one or two
pages, or a quarter juz.
After deciding the target, try your utmost to
achieve the target.
Due to some genuine reason if you are not able
to achieve the target, don’t get upset. Instead try
to make it up the following day along with the
day’s quota.
yassarnalquran.wordpress.com 18
19. 10. Recite loudly
You should recite aloud, first to follow the
Prophetic Sunnah and second to perfect
your memorization. Intoning the Qur’an is
endeared to the hearing and helps in
memorizing, as it gets the tongue familiar
with a given tune and an error is easily
identified when the usual tune varies in one
way or another. When this happens, the
tongue feels the variation and stops to
correct the recitation.
yassarnalquran.wordpress.com 19
20. 11. Do Not Move to the Next Portion Till
You Master the Present One
You should not move to the next portion
till you master the previous one.
One way to perfect your portion is to
make a habit to recite it during your daily
Salah (Prayers).
In this way, memorizing the Qur’an will
be easy and possible for everyone,
even if one seems busy.
yassarnalquran.wordpress.com 20
21. 12. Connect its Beginning to its End
You should connect a Surah from its beginning
to its end, and your tongue should move with it
smoothly and easily without exerting your mind
in remembering the verses and continuing the
recitation. Rather, your memorization should be
as smooth as water and you should recite it
without any faltering whatever. It should be like
the case when one recites Al-Fatihah without
any effort, and this, of course, is due to its
being frequently repeated and recited.
The point is that you should try to fix the whole Surah
in your mind, connected and smooth, and not to move
to the next till you have memorized it perfectly.
yassarnalquran.wordpress.com 21
22. 13. Pay Attention to Similarities
The Qur’an has 6236 verses,
around 2000 of which are similar in one
way or another. In some locations the
similarity is exact, while in others there
may be a difference of just one letter or
one or a few words.
yassarnalquran.wordpress.com 22
23. Two examples of similarities
One must be very careful in noticing the words
beginning with ‘waw’ and ‘fa’. Note the
difference in two consecutive verses of
Note the systematic addition of words in
three different verses of سورة الكهف
ً ْ َ ْ َ ميِ َ َ ميِ َ َ ْ اyassarnalquran.wordpress.com 23
َ َ ََّ َ َ َ ْ َ ْلُ ْ َ َ ميِ ا
24. Hence, one who memorizes the Qur’an
should pay great attention to the similar
verses.
The more one pays attention to these
similarities, the firmer his memorization
gets.
yassarnalquran.wordpress.com 24
25. 14. Follow Up Frequently
After memorizing the Qur’an, if you leave it
without revising and keeping in touch, it
will flee from you and you’ll rapidly forget
it. So, one must follow up frequently and
continuously persevere in revising and
recalling in order to preserve in one’s
memory. The Prophet, peace and
blessings be upon him, said, “The example
of the person who knows the Qur’an by
heart is like the owner of tied camels. If he
keeps them tied, he will control them, but
if he releases them, they will run away.”
yassarnalquran.wordpress.com 25
26. The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him,
also said, “Keep on reciting the Qur’an, for, by
Him in Whose Hand my life is, the Qur’an runs
away (is forgotten) faster than camels that are
released from their tying ropes.” (Narrated by
Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
This means that one who memorizes the whole
Qur’an should read at least a whole juz’ per
day.
yassarnalquran.wordpress.com 26
27. 15. Understand What You Memorize
One of the greatest aides in memorizing is to
understand the verses and recognize the
relationship between them.
CAUTION: However, you Must Not give
more emphasis on understanding during the
course of memorization. The one who depends
mostly on understanding is liable to forget and
stop as soon as his mind is not attentive. This
happens mostly during long recitations.
yassarnalquran.wordpress.com 27
28. 16. Try your utmost to put into practice
What you study and memorize of the
Qur’an, try to practice it in your life.
The Qur’an is Guidance par excellence.
The real meanings of the Qur’an come to
fore only when the believer implements
the teachings in one’s life.
yassarnalquran.wordpress.com 28
29. To summarize:
1. Purity of motive
2. Sincere Du’aa
3. Have a Mus’haf with clear script
4. Keep the same Mus’haf till the end
5. Know the Rules of Recitation
Pronunciation
6. Be with Wudhu
7. Select the right place
8. Allot daily time schedule
yassarnalquran.wordpress.com 29
30. 9. Specify the daily quantum
10. Read aloud
11. Don’t proceed without mastering
12. Connect from beginning to end
13. Pay attention to similarities
14. Keep in touch lest you forget
15. Understand
16. Practice
yassarnalquran.wordpress.com 30
31. May Allah Guide us to learn His
Book by heart in the finest
manner.
Aameen.
