I’d like to kick off my remarks with a bit of a personal story
Some Terms We’ll Be Chatting about
 IoT
 “Crowd Sourcing”
 Big Data & Machine Learning
 “Transparent Computing”
 Social networks
 Oh yeah… a little thing called
mobile
Internet of Things
Pretty much - if it’s a “thing” -
someone will figure out how to
connected it if “it” hasn’t been already.
Crowd sourcing
• Many eyes and contributions
makes data more accurate.
• It eliminates single point of error.
• Lowers the cost of acquiring data
• The value is in the experience and
how it leverages the freely given
data
Think Waze
5
Waze - Crowd
sourcing app.
AWESOME
experience
Big data
Big data is an evolving term that
describes any voluminous amount of
structured, semi-structured and
unstructured data that has the
potential to be mined for information.
In this context, the IoT will create 20x’s
more data than human sources by
2020
Machine
Learning
Machines and services that make sense
out of big data

IoT + Crowd Sourcing + Big Data + Machine Learning
[should]=
Transparent Computing
The ‘future’ backbone of connectivity
Automation that makes my life simpler, more
comfortable, efficient, without the need for me to
interact with any “thing”.
Some charts from Henry Blodgett, Business Intelligence
Ubiquitous connectivity for the entire human race is
quickly becoming a possibility.
 Within the next 10 years, anyone -
anywhere will have access to some
form of connectivity.
 Consequently, for the first time in
history, all of mankind will have access
to one another anywhere, any time.
 That’s an incredible thought if you
ponder it for just a minute.
So this begs the question(s)….
 Why should I care?
 What does the social mobile trend
have to do with transparent
computing?
 What on earth does this have to do
with the family history vertical?
To illustrate: let’s shift gears for just
a second…
This is my Mum.
 Born in Cape Town, South Africa
 Immigrated to the US in 1958 leaving
everything behind to never [permanently]
return.
 Graduated with honors in 1963 from
Brigham Young University with a BA in
Music. (She never graduated from high
school). She went on to graduate with her
MA in Music at age 50.
 She’s shared very little about her childhood.
My mum. I really don’t *get*
where she’s coming from :)
But I really wish I could…..
So how about a couple of cool scenarios to consider.
14
What if “Family History Jarvis” came
approached me on my car speakers on
my ride home….
15
This transformation has two parts:
 Transparent computing is the back end.
 The machine learning component previously discussed will
eventually make itself into the user experience. Perhaps even
sooner than later (think virtual reality + ML)
 Mobile/Social will define the user experience
So what’s changing?
 Mobile platforms are more prolific than ever. That trend won’t end for a very long time
 Social on mobile devices has become the new platform of The Internet
 Newer generations will experience connectivity in ways that we’ve (up to now) thought was “out
there”
 The pace of innovation is growing at an unprecedented rate.
 The more connected our world becomes, the more data becomes available. That means cheaper
access to customers, data, and geos.
Why should I care?
 The impact of mobility is happening now.
 Social networks are the ‘new’ platform of The
Internet
 The growth rate is staggering.
 The longer you wait to get on board, the higher
your costs for on boarding will be.
 Because there is a significant risk that your
business model will become stagnant if you’re
counting on subscription revenue and desktop
platforms (if it hasn’t already).
 Others will figure this out if you don’t.
+ I love this Super Bowl ad. It does a great job in
showing just how quickly things change….
+
So who will win the race?
+
A few final words
 Hire people who *get* big data.
 Hire people who know how to reveal context sensitive data SIMPLY on a mobile device.
 Morph your business model around your new direction and commit to it long term. Acquire what you
can’t develop fast enough to give you the competitive advantage.
 Know your customers whoever and wherever they are.
 K.I.S.S. Single purpose apps are the current rage.
 Last, but most importantly, embrace that this deck will be irrelevant by the time you leave this room :)
Thank you

So why does FamilySearch have a business development
group?
 We want to see the ecosystem grow to adjacent markets
 We’d love to see the market grow and spur new innovation and fresh ideas that will attract all kinds
of audiences and investors in all kinds of markets.
 Because it helps us understand better what pressures new innovators and legacy companies alike are
facing in:
 Maintaining the status quo
 What’s working and what’s not
 Where ‘poking’ at different concepts is less risky than it is for our partners.
Some of the Common Elements
Business Elements on Mobile
 Static ad supported.
 Context sensitive audio/video ads
 Think FHJ making travel reservations and the $$
opportunities there. The possibilities are endless
 Mobile only
 Based on social platforms
 Carefully target your *growth* demographic and use
the right platform to approach them where they are.
 Consider phasing out subscription models. They can be
kryptonite.
+
Now for something to ponder on:

Mobile data growth is off the charts

Editor's Notes

  • #3 We have 2 Nest Thermostats. We’ve had them a while, but just over a year ago, I got my Jawbone UP24. Somehow, I unintentionally linked it with our Nest account. Consequently, Nest and Jawbone had been sharing data about my sleep and the temperature in our home and making adjustments designed to optimize my sleep with our Nest schedule. All was going just fine…. Until I left town for a prolonged period of time…. My wife called me early one morning to tell me that the whole family had slept in our bed because they couldn’t get Nest to adjust manually. I found this on my phone. Needless to say, “works with Nest” needs some “work”!
  • #7 If you don’t use it now, you don’t own a car :) But if you own a car - try it and you won’t imagine your commute without it.. But don’t think of it as a GPS app. I love it! It plays alerts over my speakers so I’m not distracted by a screen!
  • #8 Yeah, I chose this graphic on purpose. Don’t confuse big data with “Big Brother”. Think of it as piles of abstract data that means nothing unless it’s woven together…
  • #9 Weave our own - and other’s data - into something that makes sense…
  • #10 IoT + Crowd Sourcing + Big Data + Artificial Intelligence = a humanistic solution calculated to provide contextually relevant information to me, now. Or - more simply stated - automation that makes my life simpler, more comfortable, efficient, without the need for me to interact with any “thing”.
  • #11 The future of mobile - lives in the developing world. Facebook gets that. See article: http://techcrunch.com/2012/05/27/mobile-developing-world/
  • #12 In the interest of time, I’d like to change gears again now and quickly talk a bit more about a catalyst. Mark Zuckerberg’s internet.org initiative is taking on an ambitious goal. To connect the disconnected. And they’re making HUGE inroads. They’ve made a massive imprint already in places like Ghana, Zambia, Columbia, India, Mexico, and many other places with many more on the docket in Asia and Africa. Why does this matter? Because soon, everyone on this planet will be connected. Of course, since it’s their initiative, they have the inroad, so by default, they’ve won the crown of owning the current platform of the internet (social).
  • #14 When you look at this very sparse data, you might (or at least kinda) see why my mum considers her life in South Africa boring. I disagree! However, as she gets older the details of her life are fading away with time. My whole life I’ve wanted to go see where she was born, walk the streets she did as a child, go to the church where she went, and meet family there that I’ve never met before. That remarkable little girl in that picture sadly lost her father not long after this photo was taken. Together with her own mum, she immigrated to the US to claim a new life. And that she did. What’s lost even moreso, is details about her father’s personal history. I’d give anything to find out more about him, what made him tick, and who his parents REALLY were! A veteran of WWI, he refused to talk much about his time there just like many of his comrades.
  • #15 So what if - a transparent computing service we’ll call (for fun) the “Family History Jarvis” was able to do a BUNCH of data loading and crunching, and then (with my permission) was tied into my proximity, provided research solutions and ideas to me? Let’s explore that for a second.
  • #16 Tee things up. So, because I have a “connected car”, and there is TONS of data out there publicly available about my mum, Family History Jarvis, goes out, gathers it, senses that I’m in the car, and shares it with me. I’m smarter about my mum and can connect with her in more meaningful and deeper ways. Connected car (IoT) + public records, photos, etc (Big Data) + Family History Jarvis (AI) = All automation that happens in the background only to present it to me in the most relevant method to me at the time (Transparent Computing) Family History Jarvis says: Good afternoon Greg. At your request, I’ve been searching all over The Internet for information about your mother. Looks like you have some time available now during your commute home. Would you like me to summarize what I’ve learned for you and then decide where we should go from there? Greg, I noticed that you’ve set aside the first week in October for a holiday. I’ve found travel fares within the budget you’ve allocated. Would you be interested in a trip to visit your mother’s home town? I can arrange for a tour to all of the important sites in her personal history prior to her immigrating to the United States in 1958.
  • #18 More than ½ of the online population spends at least 29 minutes a day on ONE of Facebook’s apps FB FB Messenger Instagram WhatsApp internet.org
  • #19 The mobile phenomenon is here. It’s happening. You can’t afford to ignore it any longer. Transparent computing is MUCH further along than you might realize. It’s not a new concept, but what’s new is that it’s real. Translated: Don’t get left behind! Remember - it’s name - transparent computing - is by design. Don’t get hung up on that. What is does for you is what matters. It should be revealed through clever mobile apps on social platforms.
  • #20 If you stop and think about it, 21 years ago wasn’t that long ago.
  • #21 Create apps/experiences that create contextual data that is shareable (ala Facebook). Those who use those platforms to “go to” their users rather than the old “they’ll come to me” paradigm of a website. Effectively use advertising networks on social platforms specifically targeted to: Key demographics in key geo’s with relevant, contextual, and fluid calls to action
