His paternal grandparents settled in an ethnic neighborhood in Los Angeles for job opportunities and education. His father later moved to La Puente and then Montclair. His mother's side came from El Paso, Texas and Los Angeles; they also moved to La Puente. Both sides of the family were drawn to California for its mild climate, jobs, and school systems. While his father's family strongly maintained Mexican Catholic traditions, his mother's family became more Americanized over time.

Barack Obama became the first African American president in 2008 after a historic campaign against John McCain. As president, Obama worked to pull the country out of recession through an economic stimulus bill and bailouts of the auto industry. He won reelection in 2012 by emphasizing themes of democracy, equality and unity.

The 27th President, William Howard Taft, continued Roosevelt's progressive policies but faced criticism for favoring big business. This split the Republican Party in 1912. Woodrow Wilson was elected as the 28th President and pursued the "New Freedom" agenda, passing laws like the Clayton Antitrust Act and the Federal Trade Commission Act to strengthen antitrust regulations.
