The Conservative Tide   Conservatives argue about state governments, businesses and individuals freedoms.  The government fueled the Conservatives argument with the Entitlement Program and the   Civil Rights Act of 1964 .   The   Entitlement Program   guaranteed benefits to certain groups, this cost the government close to $300 billion a year.  The   Civil Rights Act of 1964   was an effort to eliminate racial discrimination.  The   New Right   was a group of people that came to support and promote single issues that reflect their key interests. The   New Right   focused on social issues, like abortion.  The Policy of   Affirmative Action   – Required workers and schools to give special treatment to women, and African Americans. Many people saw this as Reverse Discrimination. The   Conservative Coalition   was an alliance of business leaders, middle class voters, democrats and Christian groups.   The   Moral Majority  was an organization formed by Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson. This organization consisted mostly of Christians who translated the bible literally and believed strongly in right and wrong.
The 1980 Presidential Election   Reagan was elected governor of California in 1966 and he was re-elected in 1970.  Reagan had numbers of key issues such as, supreme court decisions, abortion, pornography, teaching of evolution and public prayer in school. All of these issues caught the attention of conservatives .  Americans called Ronald Reagan the “Great Communicator” because of his skill at simplifying issues and showing clear cut answers. Reagan won the 1980 Presidential Election with the majority. He received 44 million votes and got 51% of the total. He had wide-spread support from more than half of the states in The United States of America.   Reagan was originally a democrat but in 1950 he became a conservative republican Reagan believed in lowering taxes, less government, and traditional values. Upon election Reagan worked to make is beliefs into public policy .
