Letters to Strangers Uses Words to Destigmatize Mental IllnessJames Ferrari
New York City resident James Ferrari produces feature films and documentaries as the director of Ferrari Media and Tribal Truth Media. James Ferrari is also an entrepreneur and philanthropist who contributes to several causes, such as Letters to Strangers, a support organization for people aged 13 to 24 who suffer from mental illnesses.
Letters to Strangers began with Diane Chao, whose bipolar disorder led her to attempt suicide while in high school. She discovered that writing eased her pain, and created a network where people with psychiatric disorders could offer hope to each other. Members of Letters to Strangers write anonymously to share how they cope. People not in the network can visit www.letterstostrangers.org for guidelines and access to letter-writing software.
To reduce the stigma of mental illness, the group equips volunteers to organize help sessions in schools. It brings in professionals for educational events and organizes peer-to-peer efforts. Volunteers also address global issues that influence mental health, including food shortages, physical disabilities, and lack of education. Their efforts have been recognized by several groups, including the We Are Family Foundation, Mental Health America, and StudentVoice.
