This lecture, delivered on December 5, 2012 at the Tsinghua University, Center for Earth Sciences, Redbud Forum on Global Change Science and titled ‘URISA and the Development of a Geospatial Society: Past, Present and Future’ discussed the development of the GMI, with its foundations of the GIS Capability Maturity Model and the Geospatial Management Competency Model. It outlined the future potential of the GMI to advance the development of GIS professional management worldwide.

The ethics of urban big data and smart cities

Planning in an era of smart urbanism
Over the past three decades city infrastructure and services have increasingly become digitally networked, programmable and data-driven. Moreover, citizens now regularly use mobile spatial media to mediate their spatial behavior and urban experiences and share information via crowdsourced platforms. As a result we are ever more living in the era of smart urbanism — city systems can be operationally managed dynamically using algorithms processing urban big data, citizens can access and contribute live information about the city, and planners and policy makers can redeploy new streams of data to model and plan the city with increasing granularity. The development of smart urbanism poses opportunities and challenges for urban planning, reshaping how we come to know and govern cities, and this talk will examine these drawing on research conducted in Boston and Dublin.

But global negotiations on climate change often talk about emissions on a per capita basis and the emission intensity of GDP. India’s per capita emissions is just 1.8 tonnes, significantly lower than the world average of 4.4 tonnes per capita. But negotiators are not likely to be convinced by this argument

This will optimize farmers' return on investment and make the crop protection process more efficient through group buying options. E-FASAL plans to initially target progressive farmers in Madhya Pradesh through various revenue streams.
