The Lions Club is an international organization focused on serving communities worldwide since 1917. Their mission is to aid the blind and visually impaired as challenged by Helen Keller in 1925. The Hewitt Lions Club raises funds through golf tournaments, bingo, raffles and other events to support various service projects and causes, including Texas Lions Camp for children with disabilities, Sight First for eyeglasses and vision screening, and Leader Dog for the Blind which provides guide dogs. The club welcomes new members and volunteers to help with their vision screening goal for students in Midway ISD.

2. LIONS CLUB MISSION
Since 1917, the Lions Club international
motto has been "We serve."
In 205 countries, in hospitals and senior
centers, in regions battered by natural
disaster, in schools and in eyeglass recycling
centers, Lions are at work - helping, leading,
planning and supporting.
In 1925, Helen Keller challenged Lions to
become "knights of the blind in the crusade
against darkness." Since then, we have
worked tirelessly to aid the blind and visually
impaired.

Texas Lions Camp - provides a camping
experience, without charge, for Texas children
with physical disabilities, type 1 diabetes and
cancer.
Sight First – eyeglasses/vision screening
Lone Star Lions Eye Bank of Central Texas –
provides corneas for corneal transplants,
research & education
Leader Dog for the Blind - school that breeds,
trains & provides guide dogs for blind people
across the country, including right here in
Central Texas
Texas Lions Foundation - grants for Texas
disaster relief & large community projects

sewing, computer operations, small engine
repair & IRS representatives)
Texas Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center - sort,
test & distribute eyeglasses to people that
can’t afford to purchase eyeglasses
HLC Members prepare bags of
food for HEB shoppers to donate
for Food for Families

5. HEWITT LIONS CLUB FUNDRAISERS
Funds are raised through membership
dues and projects supported by the
members’ time and participation. These
projects include:
• Annual Hewitt Lions Club Golf
Tournament (each spring)
• Bingo
• Various Raffles
• Annual Pecan Sale (each fall)

at 6:30 p.m. at the IHOP on New
Road.

7. OPPORTUNITIES FOR SERVICE
SERVICE - Identifies community needs and
plans regular club projects to address those
needs. Primary focus is on vision, youth,
diabetes, and world disease. Encourages
community individuals who are not club
members to also participate.
FUNDRAISING - Plans community initiatives to
provide funding for projects. All money raised
is used to support service outside the club.
MEMBERSHIP - Develops means for the club to
be more visible in the community and
encourage others to participate. Emphasis is
always placed upon club principles of service
and community focus.

provide free annual vision
screening for each student in
the Midway ISD.
Meet the Spot Vision Screener
- a handheld, portable device
used to quickly and easily
detect vision issues on patients
from 6 months of age through
adult.

3-foot distance and uses
lights and sounds to help
engage children. This design
allows the Spot to capture
readings 97% of the time
helping to screen otherwise
difficult patients, and the
automated screening
provides thorough, objective,
and easy-to-understand
results.

Thanks to a generous donation
from the Gary and Diane Heavin
Community Fund, one Spot
machine has already been
purchased. The club is continuing
to solicit funds to purchase one
additional machine.
