Keystone SMILES AmeriCorps, Lenape Tech, and a
movement toward service learning.
 “Your pay will be low; the conditions
of your labor often will be difficult.
But you will have the satisfaction of
leading a great national effort and
you will have the ultimate reward
which comes to those who serve their
fellow man.”
- President Lyndon B. Johnson,
January 1965
KEYSTONE SMILES
AMERICORPS
What Keystone SMILES AmeriCorps Members Do...
 Serve in the areas of: education, Public Safety, Environment, and Human
Services.
 recruit, train, and supervise community volunteers
 tutor and mentor youth
 build affordable housing
 teach computer skills
 environmental projects
 serve in after school safe havens
 serve families of veterans
 help communities respond to disasters
 and build the capacity of nonprofit groups to become self-sustaining
The million dollar question…
What is it? Who does it? Why is it important?
 Service learning is NOT community service.
 Service learning IS NOT community service!
 Instead of the focus being solely on benefitting or bettering the community…
 Students are equally engaged in service and academics
 They are combining personal and social growth with academic and cognitive
development.
 Service learning has 4 major components:
 Investigation, planning, and preparation
 Meaningful service
 Reflection
 Demonstration/Celebration
 Investigate problems or needs to be addressed in the community.
 Conduct additional “research” as necessary.
 Plan academic and service activities with community members.
 Address administrative tasks and approvals
 Keep students actively involved
 Be actively engaged in service at hand
 Utilize important knowledge, skills and attitudes to benefit the community on a
local or much larger scale
 Keep students involved.
 Assess and appreciate the project for what it was.
 What went well?
 What did not?
 How can we improve this project?
 Is this an endeavor we will continue to pursue?
 How has our mindset changed?
 What impact have we made?
 Compare and contrast your views with those of the volunteers.
 Invite all volunteers and participants to take part in closing activities.
 Personalize it to fit the project or students involved.
 Be public and visible for at least part of this step.
 Keep students involved.
