The Rotary Club of Waterkloof held several successful service projects and events in the second quarter of the year, including their annual Wellness Day which provided free medical services to hundreds. They also delivered donations of clothes and toys to organizations helping children. The club welcomed new members and hosted visits from the district governor. Upcoming events include advertising in the club's quarterly bulletin and participation in district and international Rotary events.
Rotary’s members are our greatest assets. When our membership is strong, our clubs are more vibrant, Rotary has greater visibility, and our members have more resources to help communities flourish. During this session, we will look at the state of Rotary’s membership: how we got here, who is joining, who is leaving, and the opportunities for us all to make membership a top priority.

Only five years after being officially recognized by The Rotary Foundation, the Paul Harris Society has more than 20,000 members. These members donated over $20 million to the Annual Fund last year. Join this panel discussion on the importance of engaging and recognizing recurring donors as part of a thriving Foundation.
We believe one thing - that together we create our community.
Our aim is simple: to globally bring people, businesses and charities together and help provide access to discrete volunteering opportunities with existing charitable and volunteer organisations and where people can volunteer with their friends. In short, helping make volunteering an easy, fun and social activity. These sorts of activities could support anything from child cancer research, to the local tennis club, to environmental causes, to efforts to assist the underprivileged etc etc. They are all important and they all make a difference!
Since our inception in September 2012 we have grown to have 21 Chapters in 8 countries and thus our growth has been significant but are just the first steps towards realising our vision of making volunteering a global norm!
To better promote Rotary, we need to highlight our values and objectives and tie them to membership growth. In this session, you’ll learn best practices to attract new people of action, particularly among younger generations. Rotarian leaders at the club, district, and international levels will share their experiences.

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.

Welcome to the new Mizzima Weekly !
Mizzima Media Group is pleased to announce the relaunch of Mizzima Weekly. Mizzima is dedicated to helping our readers and viewers keep up to date on the latest developments in Myanmar and related to Myanmar by offering analysis and insight into the subjects that matter. Our websites and our social media channels provide readers and viewers with up-to-the-minute and up-to-date news, which we don’t necessarily need to replicate in our Mizzima Weekly magazine. But where we see a gap is in providing more analysis, insight and in-depth coverage of Myanmar, that is of particular interest to a range of readers.

community life.
4. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace through a
world of fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of

4. MESSAGE FROM THE
PRESIDENT OF RC WATERKLOOF
Happy New Year!
The second quarter of this year was filled with festivities, as is to be expected with the build up to the
holidays.
It kicked off with the annual Wellness Day at Filadelfia Ark. This was an amazing example of both different
organisations and different Rotary clubs pulling together for a common goal. A big thank you must go to
Wilma Lotter and her team for putting together yet another successful day. Not to mention a bug thanks to
all the clubs and organisations that joined hands for this great cause.
Furthermore, we have the ongoing Bal-A-Vis-X project running and have had very generous donations of
clothing and toys going off to ABBA House and Peas in a pod.
They say, ‘give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime’. You
cannot put a value to education and that is why it always warm my heart to see training taking place in our
community. The 18 caregivers at Qumi homes that received training can now, not only improve their own
lives using the knowledge they have, but also help those around them. A big thank you to Andre and Sonia
Rheeder for organising and implementing this training.
One of our focuses for this year is to increase membership. It made me incredibly proud to welcome Roy &
Marris Blakemore to the Rotary family. I truly do believe they will add wonderful value to our club, both
through their knowledge, network and fellowship. We are proud to call you both members of the Rotary club
of Waterkloof – Welcome!
Finally, we had our DG visit and our DG Luncheon this quarter. The DG visit was a tremendous success,
he was incredibly pleased with the progress in our club, as well as our outlook and vision for the way
forward. The luncheon was a lovely event. Thank you so much to everyone who prepared and attended
both the visit and the luncheon. The support is really appreciated.
I hope that you all had a wonderful holiday season and are ready to embrace the New Year. I am looking
forward to seeing what the first half of 2018 holds for our club and am looking forward to working closely
with you all on the upcoming projects.
President Katharyn van Woerkom
