- 1. Q.6 Are the OTS conventions typical to films in the same genre Similarities: The two films (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’ and ‘Hannibal’ have opening sequences that both have the basic conventions of an OTS including the movie title, names of cast and crew as well as the director and a suitable score. Yet the two films also have other OTS conventions that are less common such as the use of narrative enigmas which help engage the movie audience. The two films also establish the genre as well as signify themes with the use of dark and graphical images that match with the score. So overall the movie is very similar to the typical movies in the same genre. Differences: The film also has some differences in relation to movies from the same genre as well as the sub-genre (Crime, Mystery, Thriller). One of the main differences is the fact that ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’ uses dark animations as the imagery where as Hannibal and other films in the genre have real sequences e.g. Prisoners. Another difference is the fact that the movie does not establish any of the characters. This can be a positive as it helps create narrative enigmas yet the other films establish the characters in the OTS as it gives the movie a sense of realism and introduces the protagonist/antagonist, getting straight to the point. e.g. Zodiac.

Q.7 Evaluate the effectiveness of the OTS The opening sequence for ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’ is very unique and different making it easily interesting for the target audience, leaving them engaged. However the graphical nature of the images offers a contrast as the sequence is disturbing so therefore difficult to watch. Yet the target audience are expected to feel this way as the sequence creates a range of narrative enigmas which helps keep the viewers focused. The sequence establishes a range of themes such as death as many of the animations as well as the images represent this. It also gives the audience a clear indication of the genre as well as the sub-genre so that the audience have a clear understanding of what to expect. The Score music is very suitable as it starts off quite thrilling yet this changes as we see graphical images that help denote the disturbing nature of the film. The combination of the disturbing images and the unsettling score help create an affective opening sequence.
