3. (1994) Bon Jovi- Always
Relating Andrew Goodwin's theory to Bon Jovi's music video 'Always'
Being a ‘90s Rock band, This sing shows stereotypical characteristics of a rock video. Being a performance based video, a live
performance is linked throughout the video. A narrative also appears about a relationship broken through infidelity.
There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals- where the beginning of the chorus- “I will love you baby” links to the visuals
of the relationship from beginning to end.
This illustrates the lyrics with the storyline running through, of the woman and man in love and in conflict. This amplifies the
message through the chorus.
There is a relationship between music and visuals: the visuals are synced with the beat of the song- which is a slow-rock ballad
meaning the editing is of an extremely slow pace. This also represents the softness of the lyrics.
The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close-ups of the artist: there are constant close ups of the lead
singer and of other band players. Also as the live performance is used throughout the video, they are characterised as their
work as the band which meets the record labels needs.
There is frequently reference to the notion of looking:
the male protagonist is seen looking at a photograph of the female protagonist, and there is a use of television to display what
is happening in another room. This is shown when the room mate type character sees the couple together. It then later is used
when the girlfriend sees her lover cheating. This is an obvious reference to voyeurism as wherever the camera is placed, it is
looking into the room.
