George R.R. Martin is an American novelist born in 1948 in New Jersey. He has had a long career writing science fiction and fantasy works including his famous 'A Song of Ice and Fire' series. Some of his notable works include 'Dying of the Light' and 'Fevre Dream'. He has won several awards for his writing including multiple Hugo awards. His 'A Song of Ice and Fire' series was adapted into the popular HBO TV series 'Game of Thrones' which is currently airing its second season.
