My
Brief
You have been
commissioned by
The Northern
Echo
The Northern Echo to
produce a new magazine or
newspaper self product. financed
Your
product could be in any
style or genre but it must
be self financed through
sales or advertising. You
must also produce your
16 to 25 age group
How I met your
brief…
To ensure that I am able to meet the
brief I have done the following:
- Targeted my product at the B,C1,C2
socioeconomic classes.
- Ensured that the quality is high.
- “Spotlight” is for 16-21 year olds and it fills a
gap in the market and is commercially viable.
- It is self financed through sales and
advertising.
Things to consider…
SECONDARY
AUDIENCE
The secondary audience for my
magazine will include Northern Echo
readers, parents, friends and siblings
In order to avoid causing any offence
and ensure the secondary audience are
happy when reading my magazine,
I will make sure that my magazine will
contain:
- No taboo words or
phrases.
- No inappropriate
content.
- Articles that have the
potential to appeal to
Things to consider…
CONSTRAINTS – THE INDEPENDENT PRESS
STANDARDS ORGANISATION
The IPSO is a body who deals with complaints
from members of the public about the content of
magazines and newspapers.
There are 16 codes that must be followed by
magazines and newspapers in order for the
publication to be allowed to continue producing.
The IPSO look into complaints that have been
made by individuals who believe that the code
has been breached and when necessary they will
intervene.
Things to consider…
CONSTRAINTS – THE INDEPENDENT PRESS
STANDARDS ORGANISATION
To ensure I do
not break any of
the codes I have
created my own
5 golden rules.

Children should be able to their time at school without unnecessary intrusion.
Pupils must not be approached or photographed at school without the
permission of the school authorities. So if I was to take any photos of a small
drama group, I would have to send forward permission slips and/or ask their
parents upon arrival, if there is any child that I do not have the permission from
the parent to photograph, I will need to make sure that these children do not
appear in any of my photographs.
I will need to be sure that I do not intrude on anybody’s personal without
consent and if I do, I will need to be able to justify with a very strong argument.
However this justification does not stretch to photographs and therefore I will
not be able to take any photographs of people in private places (This includes
private property and public places where privacy can be expected)
must be sure that any and all material that I publish is not inaccurate,
misleading or distorted (including photographs). I will need to make it clear if
the material is comment or fact as the two could be easily misconstrued and
this could lead to a breach of the code. My articles will have to be fair so that
there is no chance of a defamatory opinionated article making its way to print.
I must avoid potentially prejudice references about the race, colour, religion,
gender, sexual orientation and/or any physical or mental illness/disability that a
person may have. These points should only be mentioned if they are
relevant/crucial to the story being discussed.
I must give the opportunity for any responses to any inaccuracies if they are
called upon. I will do this by sending a preview of the article to anybody that
was involved in the content of it so that if they need to reply before final print,
they have the opportunity to do so.
My
USP
Not only does Spotlight concentrate on the
active participation of Music, Theatre and
performing but it looks at many different
aspects of how things in this industry have
come to be what/how they are today.

  • 4. How I met your brief… To ensure that I am able to meet the brief I have done the following: - Targeted my product at the B,C1,C2 socioeconomic classes. - Ensured that the quality is high. - “Spotlight” is for 16-21 year olds and it fills a gap in the market and is commercially viable. - It is self financed through sales and advertising.

  • 7. Things to consider… SECONDARY AUDIENCE The secondary audience for my magazine will include Northern Echo readers, parents, friends and siblings In order to avoid causing any offence and ensure the secondary audience are happy when reading my magazine, I will make sure that my magazine will contain: - No taboo words or phrases. - No inappropriate content. - Articles that have the potential to appeal to
  • 8. Things to consider… CONSTRAINTS – THE INDEPENDENT PRESS STANDARDS ORGANISATION The IPSO is a body who deals with complaints from members of the public about the content of magazines and newspapers. There are 16 codes that must be followed by magazines and newspapers in order for the publication to be allowed to continue producing. The IPSO look into complaints that have been made by individuals who believe that the code has been breached and when necessary they will intervene.
  • 9. Things to consider… CONSTRAINTS – THE INDEPENDENT PRESS STANDARDS ORGANISATION To ensure I do not break any of the codes I have created my own 5 golden rules.
  • 10. TThhiinnggss ttoo ccoonnssiiddeerr…… 12345 Children should be able to their time at school without unnecessary intrusion. Pupils must not be approached or photographed at school without the permission of the school authorities. So if I was to take any photos of a small drama group, I would have to send forward permission slips and/or ask their parents upon arrival, if there is any child that I do not have the permission from the parent to photograph, I will need to make sure that these children do not appear in any of my photographs. I will need to be sure that I do not intrude on anybody’s personal without consent and if I do, I will need to be able to justify with a very strong argument. However this justification does not stretch to photographs and therefore I will not be able to take any photographs of people in private places (This includes private property and public places where privacy can be expected) must be sure that any and all material that I publish is not inaccurate, misleading or distorted (including photographs). I will need to make it clear if the material is comment or fact as the two could be easily misconstrued and this could lead to a breach of the code. My articles will have to be fair so that there is no chance of a defamatory opinionated article making its way to print. I must avoid potentially prejudice references about the race, colour, religion, gender, sexual orientation and/or any physical or mental illness/disability that a person may have. These points should only be mentioned if they are relevant/crucial to the story being discussed. I must give the opportunity for any responses to any inaccuracies if they are called upon. I will do this by sending a preview of the article to anybody that was involved in the content of it so that if they need to reply before final print, they have the opportunity to do so.
