1. MEDIA MUSIC VIDEO ANALYSIS
Beyoncé – Ghost
Lady Gaga – Judas
Hozier – Take Me To Church
2. BEYONCÉ - GHOST
• - Symbolic concept music video
• - Uses Beyoncé as its main fandom centre, big enough in her self.
• - Mise en scene, basic lighting with strobe, slow into fast editing. No
fancy sets or costumes, emphasis on Beyoncé. Pallet colours, not big and
fancy on colours mostly whites, greys and blacks – link to ghosts.
Lighting is pure white and simple, no fancy colours but bright and
powerful.
• - Editing, Lots of jumps in time with beat, fade ins with the music,
multiple videos overlaid, Occasional flips to greyscale lighting. Slow
motion at points. Name of the song flashes on and off with the beat.
Multiple edits of over layered shots.
- Camera, Lots of close ups on Beyoncé, mixture of wide angle shots to
close ups, depending on positioning. Long mid shot to allow for
the full scene to be taken in with emphasis still on Beyoncé, hand in wall
scene. Use of low angles to extenuate colour with shadows.
- Disjuncture – Goodwin.
3. LADY GAGA - JUDAS
• Performance music video.
• Lady Gaga is main dancer with some backing elements. Use of Norman
Reedus as attraction, celebrity endorsement
• Lots of different settings for Mise en scene, bikes, pubs, outside.
Costume is designed to follow the regular gaga craziness whilst also
revealing skin. Not a specific colouring for the video.
• Editing, bounces with shots on the beat. Starting Judas is made up of
shots on him. When the chorus word holy comes up it switches to shots
of her as innocent in white.
• Camera, lots of close ups on Gaga with long shots on bikes and with
dancing, mid shots of the bathtub scene and close ups of Reedus all to
extenuate the story that Gaga is challenging the biblical story of Judas.
• Amplify - Goodwin
4. HOZIER – TAKE ME TO CHURCH
• Narrative music video
• Hozier not present.
• No performance elements at all.
• Multiple locations used, but all are used to show a
naturalistic story.
• All shot in Grey scale, could show the artists belief that
Homophobia is an old styled point of view.
• All extremely naturalistic, creates a sense of realism and
allows the audience to really connect with the meaning of
the song, which was created to fight homophobia.
• Illustrate – Goodwin.
5. RESEARCH INTO TARGET AUDIENCE.
• What do they expect?
After questioning 6 people between the ages of 16 and 25 I have found
that from pop music videos they expect a performance styled music video.
They also expect elements of story and one person said “Without some
elements of a story line I wouldn’t want to watch the video, it'd be boring”.
Another said, “I always look for costume in a video because if the costume
looks good I can copy it”. This told me that young people look at
performance styled music videos as something they can model themselves
off of. For me this means I would like to look at using fashionable
costumes with a performance based video.
I Also showed them my ideas for songs so far and each of them agreed
that Lady Gaga’s ‘Bad Romance’ was the best choice for them, they each
agreed that they thought the music was also very popular and they would
happily listen to it in their own playlist. This would help my artist connect
with his target audience and could also help me to create fashionable
costumes in a performance and narrative based music video.
