10/2014
 Tools available: Google, Bing,
browsers, Excel ...
 Search for and store statistics
and related entries from the
past 5 years in the database
 Original entries must satisfy
the filter criteria (see criteria)
• Full text analysis: identify
the key points and
misleading points. Save
the evidence to do case
study
• Analysis of information
cited using citations
• Detecting the problems
and propose solutions
• Consult experts
• Published research

Criteria
• The articles are all original, posted on the
electronic media
• Articles contain the relevant keyword
phrases “FLEGT" “VPA" " VIETNAM”
• They are classified by source, amount,
quality and frequency of citations of the
title

Limitations of the method
• It is incomplete because it only applies to electronic
media
• Some old articles are no longer stored on the network
• Google automatically removes duplicate results
• Google personalizes search results to suit the user
• No in-depth analysis and articles of the topics (forestry,
forest management...)
• Deep expertise is needed to assess the quality of
quotations and articles
• Many articles do not indicate the source cited

Solutions
• Chrome browser in Incognito mode (Ctrl + Shift +
N) to prevent Google saving your browsing
history
• Conduct advanced searches according to time,
place,…
• Continue searching, regular updating results
• Save articles found PDF format for later analysis
• Peer review and consult experts on specialized
knowledge

Men are the majority ( 77 % ) of cited sources
Some experts are very much exploited in many
citations (standard ratio/cite high)
To date, the CED report has been cited six
times and been exploited 8 standard (Annex 1)

Recommendations/Solutions
 Provide basic information better about FLEGT / VPA to the media (use clear unified
terminology)
 Proactively provide information and requests for information from the 2 sides
(press, experts, authorities , organizations and society)
 Improve depth, coverage information , and diversify of news (interview experts in-
depth about the topic - eg timber legality definition LD, TLAS... )
 Coordinated press and stakeholders; especially government agencies and civil
society organizations
 Journalists actively explore more relevant ways of communicating the 8 sectors
(environment issues, labour and employment, using legal wood, sustainable
development,…)
 In addition, we require reporting in newspapers targeting wider segments of
readers (For example, VnExpress, Dantri, Youths…)
