Career artist contrast
From Dyer and Negus’s perception
Miley Cyrus
Miley Cryus is the perfect example of how a artists star
image can be radicalized over time, the impact of her
star image changing has been partly the reason for her
success and her being such a huge name in the media.
The start of Miley Cyrus career: She was originally the
star in the Hannah Montana
Stage one of Miley - Her first songs
The climb
This music video shows Miley in her first star image
phase. This video depicts Miley as a sweet young
innocent girl who is inspired by the world and wants to
reach her full potential. This is exactly the image of a
Disney channel role model who was a example to
millions of teenage Girls.
Transformation of Miley Cyrus
• After the Hannah Montana series finished Miley started taking her music
career more seriously. However she decided to destroy the Disney channel
style of a innocent young pretty girl who sang only dance-pop songs by
over night changing her image. She cut of all her hair and bleached it
blonde. Her pre existing fan base of teenage girls who loved the show
Hannah Montana immediately disputed and disliked greatly her new look.
Therefore her target audience changed as she became a more scandalous
figure.
Analysis of Wrecking ball
• This music video is one of her songs from
her campaign called 'wrecking Ball'. It so
massively juxtaposes from her former
image of Hannah Montana on Disney
channel. The singers new image resulted
in her music video being the most
watched music video on YouTube, which
lead to massive controversy therefore
meaning publicity.
• Throughout this video i could pick out
masses of rebranding of Miley Cyrus, the
most obvious change is the lack of
clothing she wore. At one point there
was total nudity and you could see the
rising collection of tattoos around her
body as well as the newly chopped and
bleached hair style which contributed to
her change in image. She clearly wants
leave her Disney experience in the past
and distant herself greatly from that time
by changing entirely to an anarchic,
rebellious young adult who clearly just
wants to live her life and have fun.
• Another way in which her
innocent image has changed to a
vibrant out going loud
personality is through the sexual
connotations of her swinging on
a 'wrecking ball' naked. This
aspect of the music video make it
not appealing to all as younger
children will not appreciate her
look and actions.
Richard Dyer
• Richard Dyer is a music theorist who has written a lot about
what a 'star' is through out many different media
industries. To conclude his work and research he says a
'star' is just a image, not a real person. He believes stars are
manufactured by the music industry to serve a purpose, to
make money out of a audience, who will certainly respond
to elements of a stars personality and actions by buying
their albums, posters, toys clothes. Which makes them a
obsessive fan.
• “ stars are one of the ways in which conceptions of such
persons are promulgated” - Dyer
Dyer also comments that the star image is incoherent
meaning that audiences will continually strive to
'complete' or to 'make sense of' of the image due to
two paradoxes.
• Paradox 1
the star must be simultaneously
ordinary and extraordinary for the
consumer.
• Paradox 2
the star must be simultaneously
present and absent for the consumer.
Some common values of music stardom
• - rebelion
• - sexually attractive
• - originality
• - creative and talented
• - success agains odds
• - a disregard for social values relating to drugs,
sex and polite behaviour
Keith Negus- ideologies of creativity
• What keith negus looks for Is the ‘workign act’
he tries to identify two distinct ways of
thinking about potential artists from within
the music indusrty.
• There are two types of ideology of creativitys,
the first is organic and the other is synthetic.
The organic approach
• A naturalistic approach to artists
• The image of the artist is enhanced by the
record company
• the success of the artist have been nurtured
by the record company.
• The artisit is given time to evolve and progress
through their career.
The synthetic approach
• A combination approach to artists and
material
• The image of the artist is oftern constructedby
the record company
• The artist will be given short time to prove
their success before other combinations will
be tried out.
• This type of person is ofetrn aimed at less
sophisticated audiences.
Being able to balance the two
• Overall it is said that the success of synthetic
acts will fund the development and
investemnts in organic acts.
• Big record lables balance their roster with a
combination of succesful synthetic and
organic acts to ensure that there funds stand
strong, this is a buisness technique
