5 key aspects to a music Video
Goodwin states that there are 5 key aspects to a music
video.
1. Narrative and performance of the song
2. Start Image- Protagonist; many camera shots of
him/her. They are the focal point of the music
video.
3. Relationship between the song and Visuals
4. Technical aspect of a music video
5. Seeing what the lyrics mean in your head
Narrative and performance of the song
 Goodwin believes that it is very important for the
artist to be involved in a music video by performing
as the singer or main character.
 This helps the song to be more realistic and also
gives a special connection between the audience and
artist. A good example is the song Bleeding in Love
by Leona Lewis.
This is when she was the narrator which made the
music video seem much more realistic.
Star Image
 Goodwin refers to the start image as a very
important aspect of a music video and it helps to
make it much more appealing to the audiences while
its also a chance for portraying to the audience.
 The artist is always very unique as he/she is
presented e.g. the costume, moves and appearance.
Relation between visuals and music
Three ways visuals are used to promote a
song…
 Illustrate
 Disjucture
 Amplify
Technical aspect of a music video
 Goodwin's states that the technical aspect helps to the
music video together through the use of Mise-en-Scene,
special effects, sound and editing.
 Lightening and color helps to set the mood for the music
video and create a dramatic effect and spring some life
into the audience.
 Mise-en-scene is also very vital as it can help the artist
gain authenticity and also make his video seem
professional; also make it suitable to the genre.
 Beats of the song are also very helpful as they can help to
create effective cuts that go with the rhythm of the song
to make the music video much more entertaining.
Though through beat
 The 1st step of this process is to analyze the
music structure and understand the chorus
and verses.
 Second step is that the voice of the artist would
be very unique compared to the others and will
be very relatable to the star image or singer.
 Third step is that the artist would be trying to
tell a story within his/her song. It can make the
artist seem like a story teller.
