Measurement Investigation:

What is the relationship between total finger length and
arm length?

Aim:
To investigate the relationship between a person’s total finger length
and arm length.

Hypothesis:
We predict that Grade 4 student’s arm length will be longer than total
finger length.

Materials:
     1 measuring tape
     1 pencil
     1 sheet of paper
     1 clipboard
     13 Gr.4 students

Method:
1: Collect your materials.
2: Draw a table with 9 columns (name, 1st finger, 2nd finger, 3rd
finger, 4th finger, 5th finger, arm length & difference).
3: Ask someone to stretch his or her fingers.
4: Put the measuring tape at the end of the person’s fingers.
5: Record the length in millimeters. (Optional)
6: Work out the total finger length.
7: Measure the length of an arm (Do not record the arm span!).
8: Record the length of an arm.
9: Subtract the total finger length from an arm length.
10: Record these measurements in the right headings.
11: Repeat the same steps with the other Gr. 4 students.
12: Observe how much difference there is between the total finger
length and an arm length.

   Every person’s arm was longer than his or her total finger length. On
   average, people’s arm length was approximately 42cm longer than
   their total finger length.

   Conclusion:
   Our hypothesis was correct. We conclude that Grade 4 student’s arm
   lengths were longer than total finger length.

   Discussion:
   Our result can be un-reliable. We only measured 15 students and
   they are only 9~10 year olds that we measured. We had some
   difficulties getting accurate measurements. Some people didn’t
   measure the same way and some didn’t always started on 0cm. Some
   stretched their fingers, which could add up to 1mm. We also found
hard to keep the measuring tape straight, which could have made our
measurements less accurate.
We also would be interested to measured different ages of people in
different countries. This can help us to understand how many
people’s arm length are longer than their finger length.
