Length Investigation

Aim:
To investigate the relationship between a person’s
total finger length and arm length.

Hypothesis:
I predict that a person’s arm length is greater than
their total finger length.

Materials:
    Measuring tapes
    Paper
    Clipboard
    Pencil
    Rubber
    20 people

Method:
  1. Measure someone’s thumb finger.
  2. Measure their pointing finger.
  3. Measure their middle finger.
  4. Measure their ring finger.
  5. Measure their last finger and little finger.
  6. Measure their arm.
  7. Record all the results in your table.

          Conclusion:
We conclude that at 9-12 years of age, most
children’s arm length is greater than their fingers all
together. The average difference between total finger
length and arm length is 27cm.
Discussion:
Our sample length was only 20 people. We would
need more people to be sure about our answers
around the world. We had a few problems measuring
the fingers and the arm. We found it hard to measure
fingers because of their small size.

We are interested to know about their finger and arm
size, as they grow older. It would be interesting to try
these math investigations on other people like adults,
parents, teacher’s, babies’, children, teens, brothers
and sisters to see if age impacts on the results.
