Assignment:
For the essay, choose one television show/character that relies on stereotyping to develop the character. Write an essay discussing how the plot or humor relies on either a gender, ethnic, or sexual orientation stereotype (ONLY PICK ONE). Also, please discuss whether this stereotype has become more apparent or less apparent over the years and whether it has deepened our understanding of people or perpetuated the stereotypical point-of-view in America.
For example, the sitcom show Will and Grace premiered in 1998 and ran until 2006 (imdb.com). The show deals with issues with gay men and has won several Emmy awards and nominations. However the show’s humor relies on the over-the-top gay character named Jack McFarland. Just Jack is a one dimensional character whose comedic value depends strongly on an unflattering gay stereotype (gay men are theatrical, judgmental, promiscuous, and catty). One could make the argument that Jack’s character is either detrimental to the public image of gay men or take the other opinion that Jack’s exuberant character positively influenced the American perception of gay men (since the series ran so long). The show was so popular and had such a strong following, that NBC (Links to an external site.) brought the show back in October 2017.
We have already looked at stereotyping in general on your Festival of Knowledge, but for this essay, we are going to focusing on one of the three specific stereotypes mentioned above (gender, ethnic, or sexual orientation stereotype).
Stereotypes:
The difference between stereotyping and generalizing can be tricky to define. According to Cortes, when speaking about groups of people:
Stereotypical statements tend to use or imply “all“ or “almost all“ when dealing with certain groups or group members. By speaking or writing in this sweeping manner, stereotypes encourage other to internalize those perceptions and apply them broadly to ‘all’ or ‘almost all’ of a group’s members” (6).
Gender stereotypes are “simplistic generalizations about the gender attributes, differences, and roles of individuals and/or groups. Stereotypes can be positive or negative, but they rarely communicate accurate information about others” (“Oversimplified”).
You can pick any television show. However sitcom shows may be an easier subject matter than dramas or reality TV shows. In order to find the back-story on television shows, you can look up the shows on the internet by the title or search for the show on the network’s website.
I encourage students to look up facts and statistics from the Internet Movie Database as well as through the show’s web site or any free streaming service

If I were going to write a 10-page critical analysis of today’s screening, these would be my preliminary notes. I would organize these notes as a kind of launch for my writing project, keeping in mind that multiple drafts would be in my future. Good writing is re-writing, yeah, yeah, yeah. It’s TRUE! Some of these notes would help lead me to my final draft; some of these notes would be discarded along the way. I am sharing this with you as a model for your own preliminary notes.
PRODUCTION
· What production company produced the series?
· Who are the principle personnel on the production and creative side? What are their professional track records? What happened to them after they finished with the series? Is their current status important?
· I need to make sure I have the episode’s end credits in my notes.
· Date of original broadcast.
· What was happening in the U.S. at the time of the original broadcast? What’s the original political and social context of the episode?
· Can I find out what the ratings were generally for the series?
· Can I find out the specific audience rating for this episode when it first aired?
· Looks like standard multi-camera sitcom live production; flat sitcom lighting; can I contact somebody on SCM’s production side for info?
· Can I find out the budget per episode?
· Who are the principle actors and their track records? What happened to them after the series?
· Who currently owns the series?
· Is there anything in the trade press that deals with the production of the series? Is it relevant to my argument?
DISTRIBUTION
· What network originally broadcast the series? Did the series stay on that network throughout the entire run?
· Can I figure out how this series fit into the overall network programming schedule in its original run?
· Can I track down hard audience data about demographics? What demographic categories were the original audience?
· Can I find out anything about the off-network syndication deal that propelled the series into TV markets throughout the country? Does the series have international off-network distribution?
· Besides off-network syndication, what are the other distribution channels for the series? I know there are DVDs; you can buy the entire run. Any other options?
· Is it possible to accurately estimate how much profit this property has generated?

· Maybe rhetorical analysis is the way to go on this; it seems to be trying to persuade, but what specifically is it trying to do? How does it instruct the audience? What’s the audience take-away? What is the rhetorical strategy of the episode?

Develop a thesis pertaining to the assigned film text and whether or not it, the film, in your view has the power to transform one’s political sensibilities. Your argument should express your point of view regarding the politics of difference, political sensibilities, and political transformation(s) as related to the film. Remember, you’re writing (developing) an analytical essay. Submit your thesis statement in the box below:

I found My Own Private Idaho to be a very complex film and with out any background information the average moviegoer would not see this film as one in which would awaken their sensibilities.

(1)The average moviegoer is not aware of the Generation X culture/era, male prostitution, nor the plight of someone with a unique illness like narcolepsy as presented by Mike Waters and therefore has difficulty becoming immersed and empathizing with the character's. challenges. (2) Throughout the film there is no prominent societal involvement, authority figures or anyone opposing the behavior that the Generation X slackers demonstrated. (3) The "cut-up" directors technique made the film hard to follow contributing to the overall difficulty relating to the characters.

It is difficult to identify three scenes to support my thesis statement because there is not a particular scene in the movie that could do so. It is the technique in which the film was presented and the unique character attributes that leave the average moviegoer confused, lost and walking away saying "what the fuck was that all about?"
Lastly, fully develop your introductory paragraph. Remember that the best possible thesis will answer some specific question about the text. In this case a question related to the film’s power to transform political sensibilities regarding difference:

My Own Private Idaho, a movie about two young male hustlers, is not a film that has the capability to transform one's sensibilities. Although one might relate to one of the characters, the film does nothing but leave you confused and or lost, wanting more information about the characters in order to make some conclusions about what the producer/movie is trying to make. I found My Own Private Idaho quite confusing. Only after reading about it in Democracy and Difference did it make some sense .

Background: One way to learn history is to put yourself in another's shoes. In this course, you will develop a historical character and experience American history through the eyes and ears of this character. Historical Character Robney Smith
Robney Smith a 37 year old Caucasian man currently serving in the Navy, is hoping of becoming a civilian police officer when he retires from the Navy this year. Robney (an only child) whose dream of becoming a police officer was geared by his father when he was about 6 years old. Robney and his father were very close and his father was also his hero. Robney's father who had worked for the F.B.I for a period of 20 years was killed in the line of duty when Robney was 16 years old. While Robney's father was apprehending a suspect he was shot twice and rushed to the hospital where he suffered a great amount of blood loss which contributed to his death. Robney was devastated with the news of losing his father and vowed to make his father proud by following in his footsteps. Robney's mother had also been a police officer for a period of 15 years before she was diagnosed with breast cancer which forced his mother to quit the force after having a double mastectomy and under going chemotherapy and radiation treatments. During this time Robney was 18 years old and graduating high school. Robney worked in retail and cared for his mother while she was going through treatments. Unfortunately, Robney's mother passed away after a 2 year battle with breast cancer. After losing both parents Robney decided to go into the Navy as a MP and make a career out of it. Seeing the impact his parents careers had on the community inspired Robney to further pursue his career in law enforcement. It is also a way of remembering and honoring both his parents, and showing the good that his parents instilled in him. Robney is passionate about his career goals and his determination at making the community a better and safer place is his strength. Robney's weakness is that he has not allowed himself to get to close to anyone in fear of losing them, like he lost his parents.

ABSTRACT: The concept of organizational culture has
received increasing attention in recent years both from
academics and practitioners. This article presents the au-
thor's view of how culture shouM be defined and analyzed
if it is to be of use in the field of organizational psychology.
Other concepts are reviewed, a brief history is provided,
and case materials are presented to illustrate how to an-
alyze culture and how to think about culture change.
To write a review article about the concept of organiza-
tional culture poses a dilemma because there is presently
little agreement on what the concept does and should
mean, how it should be observed and measured, how it
relates to more traditional industrial and organizational
psychology theories, and how it should be used in our
efforts to help organizations. The popular use of the con-
cept has further muddied the waters by hanging the label
of"culture" on everything from common behavioral pat-
terns to espoused new corporate values that senior man-
agement wishes to inculcate (e.g., Deal & Kennedy, 1982;
Peters & Waterman, 1982).
Serious students of organizational culture point out
that each culture researcher develops explicit or implicit
paradigms that bias not only the definitions of key con-
cepts but the whole approach to the study of the phe-
nomenon (Barley, Meyer, & Gash, 1988; Martin & Mey-
erson, 1988; Ott, 1989; Smircich & Calas, 1987; Van
Maanen, 1988). One probable reason for this diversity of
approaches is that culture, like role, lies at the intersection
of several social sciences and reflects some of the biases
of eachwspecifically, those of anthropology, sociology,
social psychology, and organizational behavior.
A complete review of the various paradigms and
their implications is far beyond the scope of this article.
Instead I will provide a brief historical overview leading
to the major approaches currently in use and then de-
scribe in greater detail one paradigm, firmly anchored in
social psychology and anthropology, that is somewhat in-
tegrative in that it allows one to position other paradigms
in a common conceptual space.
This line of thinking will push us conceptually into
territory left insufficiently explored by such concepts as
"climate," "norm," and "attitude." Many of the research
methods of industrial/organizational psychology have
weaknesses when applied to the concept of culture. If we
are to take culture seriously, we must first adopt a more
clinical and ethnographic approach to identify clearly the
kinds of dimensions and variables that can usefully lend
themselves to more precise empirical measurement and

Consider how the information above may be applied to the Greenvale Correctional Facility case study that follows.
Greenvale Correctional Facility is a large, privately-owned, medium-security prison in the southeastern United States. The prison opened in 1988, and, until recently, it employed 300 security, operational, facilities, maintenance, healthcare, and administrative employees.
The prison’s salary and benefit structure are comparable to other prison systems around the country. However, Greenvale is currently experiencing significant attrition, creating an unsafe and unstable environment, both for the inmates and remaining employees. Staff has reduced from 300 to 210 employees during the last 6 months, and attempts to recruit and hire new staff have been challenging. Online recruitment, employee sourcing, and participation in various job fairs have not created a plentiful base of trained, experienced employment candidates, and efforts to retain existing personnel have been unsuccessful. Exit interview data point to leadership issues, and poor working conditions.
Prison leadership is comprised of Warden Bob Jones, who started at Greenvale when it first opened; Sergeant Dave Lee, the senior-level correctional leader with over 15 years of experience; and Officer Stan Phillips, a correctional manager who joined the leadership team in 2015. All three leaders work collaboratively, but they tend to remain siloed away from the other employees. All of the prison’s communications are
top-down
and authoritative; the leadership team believes this style is necessary given the work environment and inherent risks involved. While the team believes they are fostering a management-by-objectives culture, many employees feel excluded from the process and perceive more of an in-group/out-group m.

The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.

It is the 21st century now, and on the surface, the earth looks
like a very open and diverse world, however, I think
discrimination is still existing everywhere. In my point of view,
a large part of the reason that discrimination happening is
because of the stereotype that people have about others.
For my final assignment, I am going to write a media analysis
paper talking about the character or plot that is based on a
stereotype people in modern cinema. As a international student,
I probably know less about American culture than any other
student, so my perspective may be more subjective. During the
three years of living and studying here, I have known countless
local people, including a large number of Chinese Americans or
Asian Americans. I will analyze the rationality of such
stereotype from the perspective of an Asian or Asian American.
In my point of view, many Chinese-Americans are trying to
shake off the stereotypes based on what they look like, but these
stereotypes are even presented in the mainstream media as
certain characteristics of a character, this includes some
manners and accents.
Jimmy O’ Yang is a actor and stand-up comedian that I've liked
for a long time, at first, I was also attracted by the funny things
he said about his life as a Chinese-American. As he became

My stand point: The heavy use of stereotyped elements can be
comedic, but in some ways it reinforces Asian stereotypes. But
because it's a comedy, it can also shorten the distance between
the races, so there are pros and cons to this condition.
