Richard and Maurice McDonald founded McDonald's in 1940 as a barbecue restaurant in California. They later reduced their menu and developed the Speedee Service System which allowed for fast production. In 1955, Ray Kroc joined the company and purchased the rights to McDonald's from the brothers, expanding franchising across the US and globally. McDonald's now has over 37,000 franchises worldwide serving 600 million people per day.
