Clark building, Birmingham, AL

The Clark Building was constructed in 1908 in Birmingham, Alabama as a department store but plans fell through and it was built as an office building instead. It housed popular businesses for decades but became vacant in the late 1980s. In 1997, it was renovated and redeveloped with financing from First Commercial Bank and legal assistance from Spain & Gillon. It is now owned by a partnership including members of Lightfoot, Franklin & White and is their law firm's headquarters, restoring an important piece of Birmingham's commercial history.

Kabwe, Zambia is the 10th most polluted city in the world due to lead mining and processing. Over 255,000 people have been potentially affected by the lead and cadmium pollution left behind from mining that ended in 1994. A $15 million clean-up project was initiated but the pollution continues to impact the health of the population, especially children.
Ocean Beach Realty Co.
The Ocean Beach Realty Company opened in Miami Beach in 1912 and helped develop what is now South Beach. John S. Collins had begun developing orchards on Miami Beach and envisioned it becoming the winter playground like Atlantic City was the summer playground. With funds from two local bank owners, Collins began building a toll bridge to connect Miami to the beach. When funds ran out, the bank owners formed the Ocean Beach Realty Company and purchased over 600 acres of land, starting the development of South Beach and launching Miami Beach's real estate industry.

The Adaptive Reuse Ordinance (ARO) passed by Los Angeles in 1999 has led to the revitalization of downtown LA through the conversion of historic buildings into new housing. - 1. THE CLARK BUILDING then and now
- 2. THE CLARK BUILDING Built in 1908 This significant commercial building was designed by Harry B. Wheelock and constructed in 1908. It was built by local real estate entrepreneur Louis V. Clark (1862-1934), among whose other developments was the Lyric Theater and whose generosity to the Birmingham Little Theater resulted in its building on Caldwell Park being named after him, The Clark Theater.
- 3. Clark Building in the 1930s The Clark Building was originally intended to be a larger department store, when plans fell through, the present structure was built instead. Its timber frame is of heart pine salvaged from an old fertilizer factory. Modernized and screened in 1962, it continued to house a number of popular businesses, including the Smith & Hardwick bookstore. In the late 1980s it was emptied of tenants, remained vacant for over twelve years and plans for demolition were under way.
