Brunei generates electricity solely through natural gas generators because natural gas is cheap, less polluting, and Brunei has its own oil and gas resources. It does not use any renewable energy generators. Brunei consumes 52 billion kWh of electricity annually, the third highest usage in Southeast Asia behind Indonesia and Malaysia. Bruneians waste electricity due to double subsidies that cause them to undervalue and underappreciate electricity, as well as pay much less for usage compared to other countries. Earth Hour is held annually to raise awareness about climate change by encouraging people to switch off appliances for one hour.

Off-grid electrification for development of small islands represents a number of unique challenges under the broad category of rural electrification. Small, off-grid island communities are particularly vulnerable to diesel price fluctuations and natural disasters, and thus, enhancing resilience through more sustainable and cheaper energy technologies should be a key priority. Financing the transition to these technologies – usually photovoltaic, micro-hydro or sometimes wind – is an essential hurdle to overcome. Once electricity systems are in place it is equally important that they are sustained in the longer term with effective arrangements for operation and maintenance, cost recovery etc. Related to this, is the productive use of the energy provided to increase islander incomes.
The workshop on Bunaken Island, Sulawesi, Indonesia from 3 to 5 November 2015, organised by the Smart Villages Initiative in collaboration with Kopernik, will explore these issues and develop recommendations for policy makers, development agencies and other stakeholders in energy provision to island communities.

As of September 2020, India's installed renewable energy capacity excluding large hydro was over 89 GW, with wind and solar being the largest sources at over 38 GW and 36 GW respectively. India has set ambitious targets of achieving 450 GW of total installed renewable energy capacity by 2022, including 227 GW from sources like solar, wind, biomass, small hydro and other renewable sources. Key states leading wind and solar installations in India include Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan. The government is also promoting renewable energy through initiatives like international solar alliances to make India a global renewable energy leader.
Ensuring energy for development of bangladesh
Ensuring energy security is essential for Bangladesh to achieve its goal of becoming a middle income country by 2021. Energy security drives a country's growth and its lack can compromise sustainable development. Bangladesh has adopted policies and goals to increase power generation through coal and nuclear plants as well as renewable sources like solar to meet rising energy demand and reduce reliance on natural gas. However, continued efforts are needed such as reducing transmission losses, strengthening regulatory oversight, and exploring additional generation sources to fully ensure energy security for powering Bangladesh's economic and social development.

India has made progress in developing various sources of energy to meet its growing demand. Thermal power using coal is the largest source, providing over half of installed capacity. Hydropower and nuclear energy also contribute, with solar and wind power capacity expanding. However, transmission and distribution losses remain high at 23% and about one-third of rural areas still lack access to electricity. Energy efficiency and conservation measures can help address these challenges.

Off-grid electrification for development of small islands represents a number of unique challenges under the broad category of rural electrification. Small, off-grid island communities are particularly vulnerable to diesel price fluctuations and natural disasters, and thus, enhancing resilience through more sustainable and cheaper energy technologies should be a key priority. Financing the transition to these technologies – usually photovoltaic, micro-hydro or sometimes wind – is an essential hurdle to overcome. Once electricity systems are in place it is equally important that they are sustained in the longer term with effective arrangements for operation and maintenance, cost recovery etc. Related to this, is the productive use of the energy provided to increase islander incomes.
The workshop on Bunaken Island, Sulawesi, Indonesia from 3 to 5 November 2015, organised by the Smart Villages Initiative in collaboration with Kopernik, will explore these issues and develop recommendations for policy makers, development agencies and other stakeholders in energy provision to island communities.
