blended form of bedside nursing report.
Background. The literature identifies several benefits of bedside nursing shift
report. However, published studies have not adequately quantified outcomes
related to this process change, having either small or unreported sample sizes or

Method of administration: Nine symptom checklist that can be professionally or self-administered (paper and pencil, electronically, or over the phone).
Summary of reliability evidence:
· Internal reliability was excellent, with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.89 in a Primary Care Study and 0.86 in an OB-Gyn Study (Kroenke, Spitzer, & Williams, 2001).
· Test-retest reliability was very high at a 0.96 in a longitudinal study (Draper et al., 2008).
Summary of validity evidence:
In a study done by Kroenke et al. (2001), both criterion and construct validity were established as well as external validity. Construct validity was demonstrated in a sample of 580 primary care patients who underwent an independent re-interview. Criterion validity was shown by the strong association between PHQ-9 scores and functional status disability days and symptoms related difficulty. External validity was achieved by replicating the findings from 3,000 primary care patients in a second sample of 3,000 Ob-gyn patients.

Introduction
Clinicians often witness impressive treatment
results in practice and may wish to pursue
research to formally explore their anecdotal
experiences. The potential to further new
knowledge both within the profession and to the
greater healthcare system is compelling. An
obvious next step for a practitioner considering
research is to connect with experienced
researchers to convey their idea for a study, who
may in turn ask, “What is your research
question?” With limited understanding of how to
respond, this interaction may result in the first
and last experience these clinicians will have with
the research community.
It has been estimated that between 1% and 7% of
the chiropractic profession in Canada is engaged
in research. Arguably, this low engagement
could be the result of practitioners’ perceived
importance of research and levels of research
literacy and capacity. However, increasing
demands for evidence-based approaches across
the health system puts pressure on all clinicians to
base their decisions on the best available
scientific evidence. Lack of clinician
representation in research has the probable effect
of limiting growth and new developments for the
profession. Furthermore, lack of clinician
involvement in research complicates the transfer
of study findings into practical settings.
The Canadian Institutes of Health Research
describes integrated knowledge translation as a
process that involves collaboration between
researchers and knowledge users at all stages of a
research project. This necessitates involvement
of clinicians to help in forming a research
question, interpreting the results, and moving
research findings into practice. This shared effort
between clinicians and researchers increases the
likelihood that research initiatives will be relevant
to practice. Conversely, it has been reported that
there is a growing communication gap between
clinicians and academics in chiropractic.
Clinicians have important practice-related
questions to ask, but many may lack the ability to
map out their research strategy, specifically in
communicating their question in a manner
required to develop a research protocol.

OHE’s Professor Nancy Devlin has researched, written and spoken widely on the use of the EQ-5D, and related measures, both in her capacity as the Director of Research at the OHE and as Chair of the Executive Committee of the EuroQol Group.
In May, Nancy was invited to participate in the “Workshop on measuring patient-reported outcomes using the EQ-5D”, which was organised by the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare in collaboration with the EuroQol Group. The workshop brought together policy makers and researchers in Sweden interested in measuring patients’ health outcomes.
Sweden has included the EQ-5D in some of its quality registries and in population health surveys for many years. The Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare now is exploring whether and how to extend use of patient reported outcomes measures in the health care system, including the EQ-5D, to both monitor the quality of providers and services and to facilitate health technology appraisal.
Nancy’s talk, shown below, introduced the EQ-5D instrument; discussed how data from it can be analysed; identified some of the challenges in analysis; and commented on the future of outcomes measurement.
