The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) assessment is a psychometric questionnaire
designed to measure psychological preferences in how people perceive the world
and make decisions. Psychological type is a theory of personality developed by
Swiss psychiatrist Carl G. Jung to explain the normal differences between healthy
people. Based on his observations, Jung concluded that differences in the behaviour
result from people’s inborn tendencies to use their mind in different ways.
The authors of MBTI, Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter, Isabel Briggs Myers
were keen and disciplined observers of human personality differences and developed
Jung’s idea of psychological types. The MBTI focuses on normal populations and
emphasizes the value of naturally occurring differences. MBTI is the world’s most
widely used personality assessment tool, and has been translated into more than 30
languages. MBTI is the most versatile tool with as many as two million assessments
administered annually in United States alone.
