Maximilien Luce was a French painter, engraver, and anarchist who helped found the Neo-Impressionist School. He had a background in wood carving and engraving and wrote for newspapers. Luce was arrested twice for political reasons, first in 1894 for inciting revolt through his sketches but was acquitted, and again in 1896 during a visit to Spain. He enjoyed painting landscapes and city scenes as a hobby.
